Memphis is a city known for many things: blues, barbecue, Beale Street, and turning out great Gibson guitars. Now, Gibson is using today's technology to recreate one of their iconic models with the Memphis 50th Anniversary 1963 ES-335. Handmade in Memphis, this stunning replica combines digital precision with period-correct components for the near-exact look and feel of the original.

A Classic Brought Back to Life

To recreate the 1963 ES-335, Gibson started with a perfect condition original model and digitized its shape for pressings that are practically clones, right down to the slender cutaway horns. The guitar's top is made of a three-ply maple with poplar core and is joined to a maple back, also with poplar core. Inside is a center block made of lightweight maple, adding to the naturally bright and resonant sound.

Electronics True to the Original

Gibson went to great lengths to recreate the sound of its 1963 ES-335, and they started with the pickups. The guitar's two BurstBucker pickups recreate the iconic "Patent Applied For" sound of humbuckers featured on Gibsons in the late '50s. A BurstBucker 1 in the neck position is slightly underwound for a moderate output compared to the BurstBucker 2 in the bridge, which offers hotter output while still maintaining a vintage character. To further ensure tonal accuracy, Gibson recreated the Black Beauty capacitors featured on the original models and even chose a period-correct wiring harness to bring the vintage read more circuitry together.

The Feel of an Iconic Guitar

The digitization of an original 1963 ES-335 would mean nothing if the replica didn't feel like the real deal. Gibson ensured the quarter-sawn maple neck of the Memphis ES-335 had an accurate 1963 profile. This shape falls somewhere in between a thicker 1959 neck and a thin 1961 neck. The result is a medium-profile neck that fits perfectly at home in the hands of string-bending blues players. The rosewood fretboard also features historically accurate block position markers.
