Traverse a Ton of Tonal Terrain With This 5-String Beast!

Gibson celebrates its 120th anniversary with a long and impressive lineup of guitars and basses, and the Gibson 2014 EB5 five-string electric bass stands proudly among these arresting axes. With a light and resonant swamp ash body, a comfortable rounded glued-in maple neck, a pair of alnico rod coil-tappable humbuckers, and a sturdy Babicz Full Contact bridge, this 5-string beast of a bass gives you muscle to broaden your sound through a versatile and wide spectrum of genres. From well-defined lows to melodic highs, this baby will upgrade your game to an exciting new level -- made possible by 120 years of Gibson innovation and trend-setting standards.

Coil-tappable Alnico Rod Humbuckers

Alnico magnets are strong and durable, and they give your signal an even and harmonious tone. These pickups will keep your low notes well-defined, thunderous, and clear, even when you crank your amp's volume/gain to the max. Both of these babies are coil-tappable for a brighter, edgier single-coil sound with more snap that'll cut through for when you want to get more melodic with your playing.

Resonant and Light Swamp Ash Body

Swamp ash is a great tonewood for bass bodies if you're looking for a sound that has a bit of bite to it. Swamp ash is wood taken from the lower end of southern-grown wetland trees. The sound tends to be a bit twangy and has a lot of air to it -- warm but with enough punch to cut through nicely. This bass's EB shape is a comfortable fit against your body, and the curved lower horn gives you easy access to those higher frets.

Comfortable Glued-in Rounded Maple Neck

Your Gibson EB5 has a comfortable rounded maple neck for your hand to grip. The slightly wider neck for your bass's extra string won't get in your way as your playing seamlessly transfers over to this axe's swamp ash body. Maple offers a nice tightness to your sound with and snappy mids that will pronounce your strings nicely when you really hit this baby hard.

Versatile for Different Styles and Genres

Having an extra string gives you more room to explore different styles, and your EB5's playability and build of swamp ash and maple woods make it a comfortable genre-crossing axe -- be it rock, jazz, or blues, there's virtually no limit to what you'll be able to get out of this boss of a bass.

Secure Babicz Full Contact Bridge

Anchoring your five strings down is your durable and secure Babicz Full Contact bridge. Your sustain and intonation will endure throughout long recording sessions, shows, and rehearsals. You won't have to worry about those fatter strings losing their hold as you dive low. It also looks pretty sweet next to your two alnico rod humbuckers and multi-ply pickguard.

Product Description

As part of their 120th Anniversary celebration, Gibson USA has brilliantly reconceived every corner of its lineup, and nowhere is this evolution more in evidence than with the EB Bass. This full-scale, 5-string bass follows a long line of great EB models, while bringing shape, look, sound, and versatility to the board, and all with truly unbelievable value for a hand-made-in-America electric bass.

The EB Bass marries extremely comfortable body shape to a glued-in, 34"-scale, full-size 5-string neck for the player who wants to take it lower, and two awesome sounding humbucking bass pickups for unprecedented power and fidelity. Whether you play in-the-pocket funk, warm and sultry jazz, or raging rock, the EB Bass is primed to take it on.

The foundation of the 2014 EB Bass from Gibson USA lies in a solid ash body and glued-in maple neck. Ash has long been respected for its open, resonant tone, and lends itself perfectly to a rich, versatile-voiced bass. Add Gibson's Alnico rod bass humbuckers with coil taps, a Babicz Full Contact bridge for perfect intonation and increased sustain.

Body and neck

The 2014 EB Bass 5-String is made from a solid swamp ash body with glued-in maple neck. Its asymmetrical double-cutaway body style is timeless, yet entirely original, and designed for forearm comfort and an ergonomic playing position whether seated or standing. The full-size, 34"-scale-length neck carries a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays and a 120th Anniversary banner inlay at the 12th fret.

Pickups and electronics

The firm sonic foundation of the EB Bass is amplified via two of Gibson's innovative Alnico rod humbucking bass pickups, which offer extreme clarity and string definition even when thundering through a cranked bass stack. Coil taps offer brighter, snappier tones, while a rim-mounted barrel jack provides a safe and secure place to plug in.

Hardware

A Babicz Full Contact bridge provides a rock-solid anchor at the body end for optimum resonance and sustain, complemented by efficient modern tuners. A multi-ply black pickguard and black truss-rod cover complete the package.

Case and coverage

The 2014 EB Bass 5-String comes protected in a vintage-brown Gibson hardshell case, includes a truss-rod wrench and owner's manual, and is backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty and Gibson's 24/7/365 Customer Service.

Overall: I've been playing bass for around 25 years. I play professionally, and I teach. I've had about 25 different basses in my life. I always HATED Gibsons. They're usually lop-sided in weight and the sound was always thin to me. Well...I had to give them one last try when they released the new EB series. I have the 5-string in bullion gold. Let me tell ya...they finally did it! This bass has some of the warmest overall tone with an excellent tonal balance. It's my 2nd favorite bass to play now. The weight is properly balanced, and it's actually lighter than my Fender P bass! Passive electronics makes it nearly no-maintenance. And, it was made right here in the U.S.A.! 120th anniversary inlay at the 12th fret tells me this line-up will hold its value, as most Gibsons do.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Gibson Fail"
Overall: First EB5 bass had an awful hollow sound, very bad harmonic resonance on B string. I returned the bass and got a second one. The second bass was even worse than the first. The B and E strings sounded hollow and awful, with the same harmonic noise. The rest of the strings also had a hollow sound. I took this instrument to a luthier for professional setup, he was convinced it was an electronic problem that would void the warranty if he tried to isolate it for repair. He suggested I return the instrument and find a completely different bass. I am doing just that, I called Gibson directly about the problem hoping for some suggestions, they told me to handle the problem with the vendor. Gibson is a company with a great history, but I fear they won't be around forever with their arrogance and complete and utter lack of customer service. I feel like I gave this bass more than a fair shake by having it professionally setup. I have bought multiple instruments in my 45 years on earth, and I have never had one that I couldn't adjust myself to my liking. I have never had any major setup problems from any of them even right out of the box. I have a Gibson Thunderbird that is amazing, and was so right out of the box. I am very disappointed this bass didn't work out. I love the look of it, the cool headstock, and the cool look of the finish. But a bass shouldn't sound this bad!
