Fender American Deluxe Left-Handed Stratocaster Electric Guitar (Rosewood, with Case)

No longer available at zZounds
Get Fender looks, tone, and playability with this left-handed American Deluxe Strat -- loaded with N3 Noiseless pickups and the ingenious S-1 pickup switch.

The left-handed Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster is a top-of-the-line axe, packed with a number of distinctly more modern features than other Fender Strats. The specially-designed N3 pickups offer a uniquely quiet and hum-free single-coil design and a bright, bell-like tone. The American Deluxe Stratocaster also sports a recently redesigned S-1 switch, giving you a greater range of tonal options to play with. And more fine details in the hardware and design ultimately make the American Deluxe a Stratocaster unto itself.

Beautiful and Innovative Neck Design

The neck on this Fender American Deluxe module is topped with a compound-radius fretboard that evolves in its radius size lengthwise from 9.5 to 14 inches. The compound-radius fretboard was developed to accommodate the Stratocaster's occasional inability to sustain bent notes in the higher part of the neck. The change in radial gradient means that strings will bend far more smoothly in this part of the neck, extending the sustain in your solo and lead playing. Its diminutive size also feels quick and light in your hands all the way up to the 22nd fret. And here, you'll notice that the American Deluxe Strat's heel is uniquely contoured to be more playable.

Proprietary N3 Noiseless Pickups

The American Deluxe's custom-designed N3 Noiseless pickups were innovated to eliminate the characteristic hum tone found on most single coil pickups. In addition to the versatile 5-way switch blade pickup selector in its usual read more spot, you've got the amazing added functionality of the S-1 switch.

Fender's Ingenious S-1 Pickup Switch

The S-1 switch is a very cool feature: it gives you five additional switch positions that route the signal through the pickups in unique ways. In Positions 1-3, you can manipulate the way the guitar's pickups are wired in series. In Position 4, the bridge and neck pickups go out of phase through a special tone capacitor. In Position 5, the bridge and middle pickups are wired in series and out of phase, in parallel with the neck pickup. Needless to say, the American Deluxe Stratocaster puts tonal possibilities in your hands that set it totally apart from other Fenders. It is a guitar that invites all kinds of fun and experimentation.

Designed to be Useful for Real Guitarists

The American Deluxe goes the whole nine yards in its attention to truly useful features, including staggered locking tuners and a two-point synchronized American Deluxe tremolo bridge with pop-in arm. The two-point sync and the locking tuners definitely make it one of the tightest Fenders out there, in terms of stable intonation.

I have returned the guitar back to zzounds.

Sound
I had high hopes about the Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster after reading many reviews of the guitar. When zzounds price-matched Guitar Center's discounted price, I sprang into action and placed order. I had a hard time waiting for the delivery, and when I received it, I waited a full day before opening the box--for the guitar to acclimate. To make a long story short, I ended up returning the guitar back to zzounds. My hopes were dashed--the guitar was a dog. My 2006 MIM strat was better than this MIA Deluxe. I believe I had received a lemon. What are the chances? Probably one in a thousand. Don't let my experience dissuade you from ordering from zzounds; they were wonderful, from the ordering experience to returning the guitar, I have nothing but pleasant things to say about zzounds.

Features
The American Deluxe Stratocaster came with lots of assessories/case candy. This is the top end strat that Fender makes, just short of their Custom Shop guitars. The guitar's noiseless pickups, N3, receive mixed reception, some people love it, others don't. I didn't have enough time with the guitar for worthy review at this time of the N3 pickups; however, they sounded good to my ears for the short time I had with them.

Ease of Use
I could not stand the string buzz on the open strings on the guitar; the nut was jutting out of the fretboard on both read more ends; the frets were sharp at the ends as well. As I stated above, my 2006 Made-in-Mexico Fender Standard Stratocaster, which cost 1/4 of the American Deluxe model, was better out of the box--nut was cut professionally and filed carefully, frets were dressed professionally and filed nicely, unlike the American Deluxe.

Quality
That's the thing about this American Deluxe that bothered me; bad QC. Funny thing is, I remember looking at the QC card that came inside the box, someone at Fender factory actually stamped with his name. I wonder if he/she actually touched this guitar?

Value
I'm not sure the American Deluxe series guitars merit the price they currently command. Fender typically charges 50% over the American Standard series. I'd like to try the Am St strat and find out for sure.

Manufacturer Support
I have never had to deal with Fender directly, but I have read about other people's experience and Fender seems to have a solid reputation for honoring customer complaints.

The Wow Factor
I lusted after the American Deluxe Stratocaster for a long time. After the letdown, however, I no longer wish to own one. I'd much rather have the American Standard Stratocaster now.
