After making his notorious debut with the Smiths in the '80s, Johnny Marr has played with many other notable musicians and bands, such as The Pretenders, The Cribs, Electronic, Modest Mouse, and countless others. The melodic complexity and ominously romantic layering of his playing can be heard in his signature Johnny Marr Fender Jaguar.

Johnny Marr gives the rundown of his signature Jaguar in this interview from Fender:

Meet the Marr-Modded Jaguar

Marr takes Fender's Jaguar and modifies a must-have axe to his personal liking, throwing in a pair of his Custom Wound Bare Knuckle Johnny Marr bridge and neck pickups, two high-pass filter switches, a four-setting pickup blade switch, and a slightly shorter scale length. Marr has also added saddles to the Mustang bridge to avoid readjustments. In the end, not only do you have an axe that invokes the emotion and aura from Johnny Marr's rich musical history -- you also get an improved adaption of a popular Fender guitar that rings with its own vibrant historical trajectory.

Notorious Tone and Playability with a 24" Scale Length

The distinctive Smiths sound is inseparably tied to Marr's amorous and elegant technique -- a style that has influenced decades of musicians trying to capture the magnetism of his tone and playing. The Johnny Marr Fender Jaguar takes a sonic signature so well-suited to Marr's evolution as a guitarist to an even more approachable level of playability and accessibility. The shorter 24" neck scale, read more a specific choice made by Marr himself, brings the frets closer together, giving it a tighter feel, while at the same time loosening the string tension a little bit to give more freedom for bends and vibrato.

Johnny Marr's Custom Pickups and 4-Way Selector Switch

Your pair of Custom Wound Bare Knuckle Johnny Marr pickups project a crisp and translucent sound that envelopes and attracts. Below your pickups is a four-setting selector blade for four pickup configurations -- bridge alone, both in parallel, neck alone, and both in series. Using the series and parallel settings treats your two single-coil pickups as one large and wide humbucker. The clear and well-defined tone of these babies encapsulates Marr's growth and progression as a guitarist who's worked with many different bands and musicians from many different genres and eras.

Durable Hardware and High-Pass Filters for Versatile Tone

In addition to having four different pickup settings to choose from, above your neck pickup are two high pass filters. Some guitarists shy away from the bright and jangly sound of Jaguars, and to hush the naysayers, Marr created a filter to darken the sound for the fourth pickup position and added another universal filter for all positions. Marr also supplemented the chrome bridge with Mustang saddles for added durability. Your shiny chrome hardware is secure and eye-catching, and the pickup selector blade and two high-pass filters all provide a sonic versatility that'll steer ears and hearts your way.

Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar Guitar

Fender is very proud to introduce the Johnny Marr signature Jaguar guitar. Marr is best known, of course, as the strikingly dynamic and influential anti-hero guitarist-arranger-all-around-musical-wunderkind behind Manchester quartet the Smiths, which virtually redefined and ruled U.K. pop throughout the 1980s. A master of melody, layering and texture, Marr has always brought his own instantly identifiable ringing, jangling genius to the proceedings, as he has done in post-Smiths stints with The The, Electronic, the Pretenders and Johnny Marr and the Healers, and right up to the present with Modest Mouse, the Cribs and innumerable guest appearances.

Specialized features include custom-wound Bare Knuckle(R) Johnny Marr single-coil neck and bridge pickups; custom-shaped maple neck based on Marr's 1965 Jaguar, with vintage-style truss rod, lacquer finish and Marr's signature on the front of the headstock; four-position blade-style pickup switch mounted to the lower-horn chrome plate (bridge, bridge and neck in parallel, neck, bridge and neck in series); two upper-horn slide switches (universal bright and pickup switch position four bright); Jaguar bridge with Mustang(R) saddles, nylon bridge post inserts for improved stability, chrome cover and vintage-style floating tremolo tailpiece.

Accessories include a custom case with blue crushed velvet interior, strap, cable and flatwound strings. Available in Olympic White and Metallic KO (a distinctive orange tint derived from the heavily faded Candy Apple Red finish of one of Marr's favorite '60s-era Fender models).

I think this guitar is awesome, the improved bridge and trem bar bushings are a big plus. I've owned a '62 AVRI Jaguar, and still own a '62 AVRI Jazzmaster. This Jonny Marr Jaguar has those improvements, that while sounding much like the AVRI guitar, it ahs some extras (position 4 plays both pickups in hubmucker style), so you get the added boost and extra grown when playing that (great for some overdrive and solos). The guitar is very versatile if you are into fender style guitars. One thing to note (but this is true to any jazzmasters or jaguars) is that they sustain less than a tele (due to the bridge it has), so just be ware that the sound is a little more percussive, but that's is whats great about it! The trem is very stable and the guitar doesn't get out of tune with light use of the trem. One other thing, is the guitar has a very nice weight to it, that is a good thing in my book, it is not super light, you can feel the quality in this guitar! Awesome purchase, this is a keeper!
