Hailed as one of the pioneering bands of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, Machine Head has been crafting technical and brutal thrash metal for over 20 years. Machine Head's frontman, Robb Flynn, beautifully constructs his fast-paced guitar riffs with an axe that is a true original -- and perfectly suited for heavy rock and metal.

A baritone guitar, the Love/Death Flying V reaches new lows, offering an expanded palette of sound for low-register riffers. To capture the low-end riffage, Robb's signature axe sports an EMG single-coil and EMG humbucker pickup controlled by a simple toggle switch and volume pot, allowing you to focus on what's important -- shredding.

Custom Love/Death fret inlays, an ebony fretboard, strap locks, and Grover locking tuners round out this well-equipped rock monster, beautifully pairing high-form aesthetics with high-function electronics and appointments.

Baritone Badness

Outfitted with a set of .10 to .58 gauge strings, the Love/Death Baritone Flying V can produce tones much heavier and more saturated than a standard guitar. With an optimal tuning of one full step below standard, low-end riffs will have a massive, heavy playground to run wild in. Epiphone and Robb took innovation one step further, implementing a shorter scale length. This baritone Flying V's 27-inch scale allows the guitar to remain tight in the low-end while tuned down -- giving guitarists free rein to pluck and chug to their dark hearts' content without flubbing out and losing tonality and definition.

EMG-HA and EMG-81

To capture the ground-shaking tone of this guitar, Robb Flynn specified a pair of carefully selected and voiced EMG pickups.

The EMG-HA pickup in the neck position may look like a humbucker, but it's actually a single-coil pickup housed in a humbucker casing. Robb wanted to preserve the classic look of a Flying V guitar, but needed the versatility and tone that only a single-coil pickup could offer. Featuring noiseless operation and alnico magnets, the EMG-HA outputs massive amounts of classic, warm, harmonic-rich tone.

The EMG-81 in the bridge is a pound-for-pound heavy rock pickup champion that needs little introduction. Utilizing powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils, the high-output EMG-81 gives this guitar serious low end and sustain for days. With this EMG pickup complement to showcase its rich baritone-voiced overtones, the Robb Flynn Love/Death Baritone Flying V cuts through dense mixes with a tone that is nothing short of thunderous.

Premium Appointments

Rounding out the Love/Death Baritone Flying V is a set of appointments that make this guitar a pro-level axe. With its comfortable SlimTaper D-shaped neck topped with a genuine ebony fretboard, this Flying V is a shredder's dream -- allowing for effortless bends, sweet sweeps, and aggressive strumming.

A pair of Epiphone strap locks allow the guitar strap to be secured to the guitar's body, keeping the strap connected even when you're aggressively flinging the guitar around -- preventing you from losing the axe in the middle of a serious rock-out session.

Grover locking tuners give the heavy strings exceptional tuning stability, and the Tune-o-matic bridge shoulders the strings, allowing for clear harmonic definition and long sustain. A single volume pot controls the guitar's output; a three-way toggle selector engages the bridge, neck, or both pickups; and the chrome hardware ensures that this guitar will rock for a lifetime.

One-Of-A-Kind Aesthetics

Adorned with artwork by Robb Flynn and Strephon Taylor, the Love/Death Flying V looks like no other guitar -- setting it apart from the crowd, and endearing it to the player looking to go against the grain. Truly representative of Robb Flynn and his music, this guitar displays the "Love/Death" theme throughout, with breathtaking art on the body of the guitar, headstock and inlays.

The Love/Death Flying V comes in a custom hardshell case graced with Robb's artwork -- the perfect way to protect your investment, while showing the world that something wicked this way comes.

Product Description

Robb Flynn is the guitarist, vocalist and founder of the hugely popular and respected metal band, Machine Head. The band has won countless awards including the Metal Hammer Golden God Award presented to Robb in 2007. Now, Epiphone and Robb Flynn team up to bring you a professional guitar with unique features perfect for heavy rock and metal.

Epiphone Gets Heavy: The Flynn Baritone Flying V

Epiphone has been a favorite of heavy metal artists for over a decade, not only for their great technical advances, but also for their artist collaborations that have often pushed the envelope in guitar design with groundbreaking results. Now, Epiphone has done it again with the Epiphone Robb Flynn Love and Death Baritone Flying V, designed in cooperation with Robb to be Epiphone's heaviest guitar (and they don't mean weight-wise) ever.

The Love/Death Baritone Story

Robb Flynn, founder, guitarist and vocalist of Machine Head, worked with Epiphone engineers to create the Epiphone Robb Flynn Love/Death Baritone Flying V, the first of its kind not only for Epiphone but for the Gibson family of brands as well. Robb has won countless awards including the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award presented in 2007. And just like his music, Robb's baritone design brings a totally original sound to metal and hard rock. "The main reason for having the slightly shorter 27-inch baritone scale is when you tune down to B, it just makes the low definition really tight, especially for palm muting and chunking," remarks Flynn. "It opens up the sound a lot." The guitar comes equipped with string gauges (low to high) .58, .42, .32, unwound .18, .13, and .10 -- the same that Robb uses on stage -- but can also accept heavier gauges.

Original Premium Electronics

The Robb Flynn Love/Death Baritone Flying V features a mahogany body with an EMG-HA neck pickup and an EMG-81 bridge pickup. The EMG-HA neck pickup is a uniquely designed single-coil pickup inside a humbucking housing, which keeps the classic look of a Flying V guitar with something special under the hood. The EMG-HA debuted in 1974 as the first noiseless single-coil pickup, and features alnico magnets for warmth and the widest possible frequency response for great definition and harmonics. It's also a perfect choice for rhythm when matched with the low tuning of a baritone guitar, providing a solid chunking bedrock while still showing off all the complex overtones that are part of the baritone experience. The EMG-81 bridge pickup is one of EMG's most requested pickups, and utilizes powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils for incredible amounts of low-end cut and fluid sustain. The EMG-81, combined with the unique intervals of baritone tuning, will cut through dense mixes and make your baritone leads sound thunderous.

Features:

- Mahogany SlimTaper "D"-profile neck
- 27-inch baritone scale
- 1.68-inch graphite nut for precision tuning
- Ebony fingerboard with Love/Death inlays and 24 medium jumbo frets
- Master volume control and 3-way toggle switch
- Chrome knobs
- Standard 1/4-inch metal jack plate
- Epiphone strap locks
- Grover locking tuners
- LockTone Tune-o-matic/Stopbar bridge

The Robb Flynn Love/Death Baritone Flying V includes a Custom Hard Case with original artwork by Robb Flynn and Strephon Taylor. The first 250 produced will also receive a hand-signed certificate. "This guitar isn't for blues players or jazz players," says Flynn, "it's a metal guitar designed specifically for young or modern metal players." And, as with every Epiphone, it also comes with the peace of mind you get from a Limited Lifetime Warranty backed by Gibson.

Sound: The sound is clear and concise, if the amp is set too high you will actually feel the low end when you chug or pedal notes. I found that the harder you pick the deeper the sound the EMGs in this guitar are amazing and yes active pups. The single coil in the neck position also sets the sound of this amazing guitar off. Feature: The best features wow there are too many for the price point of this guitar. Locking tuners, Strap locks, stop tail, active pickups. Oh and that awesome paint job, it will turn heads trust me. Ease of Use: The neck is very fast and the string gauges (heavy) are not hard to fret, unlike my Jackson King V - Phil Demmel (Machinehead). The action straight out of the box is set low which is the best for this guitar because its made for speed and metal! Quality: The product shocked me when I took it out of the case. I could not believe the quality of this guitar and the case also which the case graphic is as breath taking as the one on the guitar. Now for those people who know a lot of things about where they are crafted this one was made in Korea. Which right now is producing higher quality guitars then Japan. So that should speak for the amazing workmanship and quality of this fine guitar. Value: I would have to say the value is a steal for all the features to include the case. For a guitar of this quality made by another manufacturer could cost upwards of $1200 and up without a case in some cases. Manufacturer Support: The support from Gibson/Epiphone has always been great because they are backed by Gibson USA. The Wow Factor: The wow factor is over the top with the sound and quality to match. The baritone neck is longer but it takes the slack well out of the strings when you drop tune. I have had no issues taking this guitar all the way down to low B and it still sounded amazing. My only concern is getting strings with the same gauges because the strings on the guitar seem to be a custom set. Overall: Awesome instrument, people are quick to give it stars but fail to explain how BA this thing really is.

Overall: Guitar plays and sounds amazing. I was a little hesitant because I wasn't a huge fan of the graphics, but they aren't as crazy in person. I'm pretty sure Epiphone dyed the ebony fretboard because in the first few hours a lot of it was on my fingers. Now it has kind of a cool stripe pattern that blends in with the inlays when you look up close. Neck pickup is real cool for a clean sound or chorus and delay. Between it being a with a huge body and the baritone scale it can difficult to play when sitting down. All things considered ,I'd recommend this guitar 100 out of 100 times.
