What's special about this item?

Feature: What it does:
Mini Acoustic Humbucker Unique pickup between fretboard and soundhole
Solid spruce top Punchy, articulate and warm sound
Mahogany back and sides Dry and airy tone; clear, present midrange
John Lennon signature on body Official Lennon signature model

A fitting tribute to a legend, the Epiphone EJ-160E puts the sounds of classic Beatles recordings in the hands of today's players. Its inherently woody tone is ripe with pronounced midrange, and is further amplified by the unique acoustic mini-humbucker pickup.

True to Lennon's Legacy

The EJ-160E is a faithful recreation of the Gibson J-160E that John Lennon bought with help from co-signer and Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1962. You'll find all the iconic trimmings here: the volume and tone top hat controls, mini humbucker acoustic pickup, slope-shoulder dreadnought shape, sunburst finish, and Kluson style tuners. The guitar also features Lennon's signature on the body and inside the sound hole, verifying its authenticity.

Bold Unplugged Tone

Composed of mahogany back and sides and a spruce top, the EJ-160E evokes punchy and earthy tones -- a sound well-suited to strumming ballads or pronounced single note-melodies. Spruce tops are known to open up with age and playing, so you can be assured your EJ160E will mature with time. The guitar's mahogany neck complements the body style with a thick, more rounded shape common to late '50s Gibson guitars. The thicker neck helps lend a resonance to the spruce top, which you'll feel as you strum away.

Mini-Humbucker Powered

John Lennon's signature can also be heard on the EJ-160E thanks to its mini acoustic humbucker pickup set just under the fretboard. This pickup adds a boost to the guitar's already naturally robust read more sound. The pickup's position near the neck gives it a thicker timbre, similar to a neck pickup on an electric guitar. If you'd like to dial down the power a bit, the guitar's volume and tone controls make finding the right sound easy.

Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic

Epiphone is proud to offer a re-issue of John Lennon's favorite composing guitar with the Epiphone EJ-160E, with a portion of the proceeds of each guitar being donated to the BMI Foundation, Inc. for the John Lennon Scholarship Fund.

Inspired by John Lennon

No single artist has inspired more players to discover the joys of a great acoustic/electric than John Lennon, who showed the world how to 'plug in' an acoustic guitar beginning with The Beatles' first television appearances in the UK in 1963. The rest of the world caught on when John appeared with his Kalamazoo factory-made J-160 "jumbo" in The Beatles' second film, Help! where it was featured in clips for "Help," "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," the film's Bahamas-set performance of "Another Girl," and in a memorable rendition of George Harrison's "I Need You," shot on England's Salisbury Plain. John also used his J-160 to compose and record "Give Peace A Chance" (with Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers on rhythm!) at John and Yoko's historic Bed-in for Peace in Toronto in 1969.

Fab Features

Patterned after John Lennon's favorite Gibson J-160E, the Epiphone signature model EJ-160E features an advanced jumbo, sloped-shoulder body shape with a solid spruce top and select mahogany back and sides. Spruce is a preferred tonewood for acoustic guitars and begins to open up over time, especially with regular playing. So play your EJ-160E a lot! Just like the vintage model John played, the EJ-160E includes a rosewood bridge with a synthetic bone saddle. Acoustic guitar tops endure great stress between the nut and the bridge and rosewood has a proven to be both a solid and great sounding combination with solid spruce.

Revolutionary Electric Sound

What made the original J-160E so renown was its unique pickup system which the Beatles used constantly on stage and in the studio. The EJ-160E has the same style of mini-humbucker pickup as the vintage models which is seated discreetly between the end of the guitar's fretboard and the sound hole. Volume and tone controls are located on the guitar's lower bout. Each pickup features full function volume knobs and a master tone knob using full-size 500K O potentiometers. You can hear John's guitar on "She Loves You", "Please Please Me" and dozens of album cuts from 1963 through 1965 when The Beatles' Epiphone Casinos took over!

Hardware

The classic solid mahogany neck has a 25.5" scale and features a SlimTaper profile. The rosewood fretboard is adorned with "Trapezoid" inlays with a vintage style Epiphone dovetail headstock and like the original has a 1.68" nut and a 12" radius.

As with all Epiphone instruments, Epiphone John Lennon EJ-160E comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty and Shadow's 5-year warranty (electronics) and is backed by world-famous 24/7/365 Gibson Customer Service.

This guitar is really what I needed in order to get the "Beatles" sound as our band "BackBeaT" is really a Rock n Roll/Beatles cover band so we do a lot of the classic Fab Four stuff! It works great for me - I'm looking forward to using it live on stage!

Sound
I'll tell you, I own a 1961 Gibson Hummingbird and the EJ 160 sounds just as good as a top-of-the-line Gibson. Mind you, it will even get better with age but I'm very happy with the tone and sound so far!

Features
I love the fact that they used the same woods as my '61 Gibson Hummingbird - top is Solid Spruce and the back and sides are Mahogany- that's why I can compare it to the 'bird - they both sound so sweet!

Ease of Use
I really never give a "10" but this thing will score a "9" in this category. I found the action (factory set) to be pretty good - but I'm going to tweak it a bit to bring it where I like it. Overall it has great playability - I highly recommend it.

Quality
Someone really did great job in re-creating a classic guitar! If you can't afford the Gibson version ( not many can at $2,000.00), this is the next -best thing - and it's pretty-much identical. Mine was a factory second and yet it was just as beautiful as the showroom models!

Value
Just get it yourself and find out! You'll be very surprised!

I bought it through a dealer - a factory second so there really is no contact - I'm on my own for service

The Wow Factor
Beatiful guitar! Just as nicely done as the Gibson model at a fraction of the price! Worth the money man!
