Digital Multi-Track Recorder / Control Surface.

Are you looking to produce some decent, full-band demos? Got the next bedroom symphony masterpiece trapped in your head? Thinking about getting into audio engineering? A digital multi-tracker is a great way to start making your own recordings, and the Zoom HD16CD digital hard disk recorder has everything you need to take your music from concept to completion. While many multi-track recorders are either powerful but difficult to use or simple to operate but lacking in features, the HD16CD strikes the right balance to help you make the most of your sessions. Its intuitive layout makes mastering the basic recording process a snap, with an amazing depth of functions typically unheard of in its price range. You'll be laying down tracks right away, with plenty of pro-quality extras waiting for you when you're ready to dig a little deeper.

Lots Of Tracks, Lots Of Record Time
With sixteen tracks, you'll be able to track and mix projects both big and small. Whereas most multitrack recorders in the same price range are capable of only two- or four-track simultaneous recording, the Zoom HD16CD can record up to eight tracks at at time; plenty for recording full, professional-sounding drum tracks. And you'll still have plenty of room for multiple overdubs. Fill up the remaining tracks, and you can mix them down to a dedicated bounce track to free up even more tracks for overdubbing. You even have up to ten virtual tracks per channel, meaning you'll be able to record multiple takes of, read more say, a vocal performance, without ditching the previous attempts. You're able to try them all on for size and pick the one that really shines through. With an 80GB hard drive included, you won't have to worry about running out of available recording time. The HD16CD can hold up to 240 hours of CD-quality, 16-bit/44.1kHz digital audio.

A Self-Contained Production Studio
With the Zoom HD16CD, you'll be able to realize complete productions, from tracking through to finished CD. A whole studio's worth of high-quality digital effects are all at your disposal, all arranged into different groupings for easy access. Integral recording effects like compression, limiting, and Zoom Noise Reduction are on-board, as well as rhythmic effects like chorus and flanger that can be synchronized with your performance by setting a master tempo. For the final steps of the recording process, the HD16CD sports a suite of pro-level mastering effects, including a multi-band compressor. Twenty one mastering presets make it easy to give your finished projects the punch, sheen, and polish of your favorite records. Once you're happy with the results, send the master WAV files to your computer over USB, or pop a blank CD-R or CD-RW into the built-in burner and hand out CDs to all your soon-to-be adoring fans. Recording, mastering, and distribution? You're a mogul!

Session Rhythm Section Inside!
Not many studios come with their own rhythm section, but the Zoom HD16CD does! Nine trigger pads with three sound banks let you play one of twenty different kits, with drum sounds ranging from studio-grade acoustic sets to old school electronic drum machines. Combine them with the eleven distinct bass voices, and you've got a built-in rhythm section that would make Sly & Robbie nervous! You can even build your own percussion kits using the 70-second sampling capacity.

Connect Your Computer, External Sequencers
While the Zoom HD16CD is more than capable as a stand-alone recorder, expandability is also an option, thanks to smart USB and MIDI support. Use the USB connection to drop your recorded WAV files into computer-based workstation software, and then use the HD16CD itself as a control surface for tactile mixing and transport control! Adjust fader levels, pan tracks, and more from the hardware, and your software follows right along. Do you have a hardware sequencer or additional recorder? The Zoom HD16CD can tempo sync to any MIDI-enabled audio device for nearly infinite expandability, with or without a computer.

Data backup, restore and importing of WAV files are also quick and easy.

DAW software control surface capability You'll find the studio recording console features so convenient and intuitive, that you'll want to keep using them when the HD16 is connected to a computer. Using either USB or MIDI, the HD16 can act as control surface for a DAW application. The faders, keys, and rotary encoders can be assigned to control the mixing functions of the software, which makes transport control and mixing operations like fade, pan, and EQ adjustments much more "physical." Adjustments that are difficult with a computer mouse, such as using multiple faders simultaneously are a breeze with its control surface. This Zoom meets all my needs.

Sound
As one who has spent some 30 years tracking with those who have put $15,000 and up into their Tascam and Otari open reel project studios, sat in with those who've bought time in quarter mil.+ studios with 2" tape machines and 6 foot tall rack mounts, and fiddling endlessly (and often haplessly) with cassette machines, I've got to say that the initial 2 weeks I've just had with my new little Zoom HD16 has been my most magical and best sound experience, bar none. My purchase of this thing came in a very weird way. Some months back, I learned that my coworker's son was getting his start to become a pro wrestler, and was already doing arena exhibitions. I asked if he had entrance music, and since he didn't I offered to get something together. In the process I'd gotten so frustrated with the results I was getting that I nearly tossed my Portastudio 414 across the room. The Zoom was a spontanious midnight purchase, whipping out the plastic... The next day I thought, "What the heck have I gotten myself into!?! I'm a analogue guy! A linear tape and dedicated-knobs-on-the-board type dude! I'm too old for this...Can I even live beyond tape hiss?!" I'd long suffered a horrendous "learning failure" with my dust covered Boss DR5, which for me has always been a soft button nightmare...It would probably be more realistic for me to somehow become a Kung Fu master and horizontally walk up the side of a tree. Anyhow, after an initial read more slight freakout, I read through a few key sections of the Zoom manual, plugged in my elderly Ensoniq VFXsd and kept getting those "ah-ha" moments. For my initial project, I've just used a little itty bit of it's features, keeping it to an analogue deck mentality; not even trying to use the built-in rhythm feature, or digitally ping-ponging, etc. Trying to think along the lines of just filling up some tracks while presetting the internal effects for each; learning I could keep it simple by just plugging whatever instrument into the 1st jack ("activating" the jack with it's on/off button)and assigning it to whatever track by pushing the button to whatever track (red glow=active/record; green glow=monitor/playback). Every track then automatically feeds and stacks into the Master track. Simple. Those of us who've used analogue Portastudios know the often futile struggle that it takes to get those tracks to sound truly "musical", beyond what otherwise sounds like four cheesy cassette boom boxes wired in series. Not so with this Zoom! I feel I could actually go ahead and burn a respectable and actually quite "presentable" CD for live auditorium mains playback right from the raw unpanned/unprocessed tracks! It seems to be that stinkin' good. But I'm gonna fiddle with it some in mixdown mode, do my pans and assigned processing and see how much further it can progress. To me the unit sounds pretty warm, and not at all digitally harsh and "gatey".

Features
I live trigger my own drum samples by hand on a remote keyboard, and play my own bass lines so I haven't fiddled with the built-in rhythm sequencer. This Zoom is a work of metal art, nice and heavy. It would have been cool to have dedicated knobs for Pan, Low/Mid/High per track, but hey, it's no real big deal doing it this way - at least there won't be any of those knobs getting dirty and crackly!

Ease of Use
This unit seems to be EXTREMELY musical, even right out of the box, in comparison to analogue cassette. The learning curve for using it LIKE one would an analogue deck is not all that bad. Make sure to read up on the basic operation sections in the manual before turning it on. You have to fiddle with it a bit, but do it wisely.

Quality
It seems great.

Value
When you've grown up in an era when 16 tracks meant tens of thousands of dollars and huge 1" tape media, desk-sized mixing boards, rackmounted outboards even for simple processing, and separate mixdown units like a 1/2 track, or DAT, the $599. for this unit is ridiculously cheap. Like discovering you can get a new Bentley at the car lot for $5000.

Manufacturer Support
I've so far had no contact with Zoom.

The Wow Factor
It's brushed metal, not gray plastic. It's compact and meaty. It does what you want...
