"Ideal for first timers, usable for old hands"

Feature:
I am not a fan of the effects built in, as they seem to lower the volume and do not produce well. Our guitarists have an array of pedals so this was not needed as well. My only real complaint is that there is no back up light to the lcd. This makes it almost impossible to navigate unless I am recording with either a direct light or in the daytime, which as most musicians know, is not our calling hour...lol.

Quality:
I have never had a problem that I did not create myself in so far as recording. It holds up well and the fact that I can burn directly is a nice feature.

Value:
I think the price is reasonable, but you have to spend time to learn to use it. It is very functional and practical, but it is important to learn about it.

Desirability:
Small, compact and user friendly.

Sound:
The sound reproduction remains pretty solid. I have read the other reviews, but pound for pound, I think it should be understood that it may have only two leads to record into, but the tracks can be 'bounced' to other tracks, allowing multiple recordability. Also, when our band plays, we can lead the two inputs into a simple P.A. head for full band recording.

Ease of Use:
I will give the ease of use a nine. It is truly plug and play. A new user can spend just ten minutes in the manual and start recording. Tascam is known for it's ease of use and this unit is not an exeption.

Support:
I have never needed to speak with a Tascam rep to resolve any issues.

Overall:
I have recently purchased a Peavy 24 channel board that also has a burner, so the learning continues! But the Tascam was a nice intro.

"Frustrating. Frustrating. Frustrating."

Feature:
I liked the effects and the ability to bounce tracks. Lots of control over the recording.

Quality:
Hard to say how it will hold up. I wanted to drive over it with a truck after I lost an hour's worth of live recording because it failed to record, but the owner wouldn't let me. Seem pretty sturdy, though.

Value:
Decent, when it works.

Desirability:
If I hadn't used one, I might have considered buying one because of its features. After using it, it lost a LOT of its sex-appeal.

Sound:
The recording quality is very good -- when it records!

Ease of Use:
For simple recordings it SEEMS pretty easy. The frustrating thing about it, though, is that there were several times when everything looked good -- meters were jumping, overload lights were blinking occasionally, the channel record lights were lit and the headphone sound was beautiful -- but on playback there was NOTHING THERE!!!! Also simple things like mastering and transfer to a computer are buried under many layers of menus.

Support:
The manual is not too bad, but it jumps around and it's hard to find out how to do simple things. Tech support basically just shrugged.

Overall:
It sounds good and I suppose if you live with it for a while you'll get used to the menus and controls, but it's too easy to get burned with a non-recording. If the lights are on and the meters are happy, it should be recording. If it's not ready, there should be some indication of that.

About This Product!
Description
Docs
How do you improve on the most complete, easy-to-use 8-track recording system on the planet? Add a CD burner to our already feature-packed DP-01FX! Introducing the new DP-01FX/CD. Now you can burn your mixed hits directly to CD or back up your work in progress at any time without having to transfer it to computer first.

Like the DP-01, it combines the hands-on simplicity of our classic cassette Portastudios with the superb sound and editing flexibility of CD-quality digital. It has the XLR microphone inputs of the DP-01FX, with phantom power for connecting professional condenser microphones. It also features a multieffects processor for adding effects to an instrument during recording and a reverb processor for adding effects during mixdown.

Plug in. Hit RECORD on one of the eight DP- 01 channel strips. Start laying down CDquality digital tracks.

Instead of 'paging' through layer upon frustrating layer of menus, you get real knobs and buttons for all important functions. Hands-on tracking and mixdown are so easy a game show hostess could do it!

A great tool for songwriters who want better quality than cassettes but don't like the expense, complex menus and windows of other recorders and software packages.

Perfect for school recording. Use it in a classroom to record rehearsals for students. Set up two mics and record the holiday concert; then transfer the mix to computer and burn CDs to sell as a fund raiser.

Portable enough to take on the road and small enough to fit in a bedroom.

Get those hits out of your head. Capture your art with a TASCAM DP-01FX/CD Portastudio.
