Public speakers usually rely on sound reinforcement technology to get their message out to the masses. Speeches and presentations are delivered into a microphone, pushed through the PA system, and ultimately out through loudspeakers to the audience. While wired microphones are common, the latest wireless technology offers unrestricted movement for more freedom on stage. Still, non-technical presenters may shy away from wireless, especially if they are responsible for their own audio management. That's why Shure created the PGX series. Easy operation for non-technical users
In concept, a wireless system works like a miniature radio station. The microphone sends your voice to the transmitter, and the receiver plucks the sound out of the air. In the same way you tune your car radio to find a favorite station, the wireless transmitter and receiver need to be tuned for proper operation. This process can be confusing with some systems, but Shure makes it simple. Frequency selection is automatic, so you're up and running with no hassles. Even better, the PGX14 is frequency-agile. This means you can quickly change channels if you notice interference. With the press of a button, any hiss or crackle goes away. Since multiple channels are available, you can use up to nine PGX systems at the same time.
Microphone and transmitter
PGX14's include a Shure WL93 lavalier microphone for unobtrusive use. Thread the thin cable up under your shirt, with the microphone element at chest-height. It will pick up your voice, along with some natural chest-resonance for added warmth and character. The package includes a tie-clip and sew-on bracket for a variety of mounting options. You also get a windscreen for outdoor use. The small PGX1 transmitter clips to your belt for out-of-the-way positioning, and it has some additional controls for more tailored vocal pickup. The onboard gain adjustment lets you boost or cut the input volume so you get the strongest level possible without clipping. If you are a dynamic speaker, the -10dB pad is useful for taking the edge off your voice, delivering balanced, undistorted audio. During breaks, the mute button can help avoid embarrassment. Anyone who has broadcasted a trip to the bathroom can attest to this. Long speeches and extended training sessions are no problem; the bodypack transmits for up to eight hours on two AA batteries.
Versatile receiver integration
PA systems come in different flavors, but the PGX14 receiver has the output connections to integrate into any sound environment. The balanced XLR jack is well-suited to a professional quality mixing board, and the 1/4-inch unbalanced jack gives good audio to more basic systems. Dual antennas help lock-on to the broadcast transmitter, offering reliable operation at a distance up to 300 feet. If you travel, you never know what sort of facilities the next venue will have.
