"Steer Clear if you are looking for Usable Distortion"

Feature:
Three channels that allow two assignable effects parameters per channel -- clean (A,B), rhthym (A,B), and solo (A,B). It has a top mounted tuner for standard tuning only with no mute. I wish the EQ on Solo was an actual EQ. It uses the "shape" knob to scoop or add low-mid-high frequencies -- very ineffective at trying to get a musical sound -- see below. Nice effects arrangement -- delays and choruses are pleasant.

Sound:
Horrible! The rhythm and solo channels are unusable for anyone with a decent ear. The distortion is raspy, buzzy, and lacks and any harmonic character. I am amazed that Crate continues with this Flexwave 5 preamp; it is incredibly bad sounding. There is nothing musical sounding about this amp, save the clean with chorus and delay. You might be able to use the clean channel with a Boss MT2 to get a decent sound, but I am not willing to keep an amp that has two channels you can't use. This means you have a one channel amp.

Overall:
I have been a transistor amp player for over 20 years. I have owned several Crates before this one but got away from them as soon as my ear got more discerning. I came back to this new series becuase of the hype on certain sites, so I tought that SLM changed the preamp and deveolped something more musical -- not a chance. Go with a different manufacturer. Peavey's Transtube line has some promising tones. I try to avoid tube because of maitinence and cost issues -- a good SS amp can produce if it has the right stuff for tweaking. Crate VTX isn't even on the radar for "right stuff" in an amp's tone. Steer clear of this one.

"Sweet amp all around."

Feature:
Loaded with features for the money. Having 3, speerate channels is the way if you're not using a floorboard in your rig. Lots of volume for the size (a semi-svelte 34lbs). Only 2 things I would add is a line out (post EQ/effects; pre-power amp) and a mute feature for the built-in tuner.

Quality:
Seems to be very well made.

Value:
A LOT of amp for the money

Desirability:
The VTX65 has a cool 60's retro look to it. However, it;s pseudo-twin, the RFX65 (only available from the *other* guys), is arguably more stylish.

Sound:
Very versatile. Nice having 3, seperate channels (including level/volume)

Overall:
This will be my main gig amp and will do almost everything I need for the variety of music we play.

News
The VTX65B features full three-channel operation with independent gain, level and tone shaping circuits. The DSP section has 15 multi-effects including chorus, flange, phase shift, vibrato, octave down, touch-wah and reverse wah and also has 15 delays with adjustments. Each of these can be set for depth, and then the Tap button on the front controls speed.

The Tap button and blue LED show the speed of the effect being programmed and once the proper effect is selected for each channel, simply holding the button for 3 seconds programs that customization for the channel.

The reverb control increases the size of the room and the amount of reverb simultaneously, and is also assignable separately from the other effects.
