"Great for use as a second or third keyboard or MIDI controller"

I purchased this keyboard because of the real need for a second keyboard. It is easy to set up as a second keyboard and layering the sounds was easy too. While I do use this keyboard in addition to its big brother the MX88, I sometimes use it as a MIDI controller for some older Rack mount sound modules I own. You can't go wrong with this board at the price it is being offered.

As a rock/pop piano & keyboard player since 1978 I've had to cover ALL the "hits" (and then some)! A good cover band keyboardist needs EVERY sound he can get into his arsenal! AND, as much synthesizing/programmability as possible (for creating those non-factory patches we so desperately need... Well, the little mx49 from Yamaha certainly delivers on ALL those counts! No, you probably wouldn't want it to be the ONLY synth in your rig, but it certainly is a magnificent addition to a well-functioning one! It contains some truly magnificent sounds on-board and boasts NUMEROUS "bread & butter" synthesizing parameters (and some quite off the beaten path). If you need to beef up your rig (maybe an extra pallet of sound at your fingertips or more/greater MIDI controllability) this little unit, because of it's FABULOUS price-point and super low weight is exactly the little synth you need!!!... I have a rather giant rig, and this little baby was so at home in there I broke down and got a SECOND one!... But, in all honesty-- if you don't like "menu diving" and you DO like programming your own sounds, then this may not be the keyboard for you. I guess (because of the very, very low price) they had to shave production costs SOMEWHERE, so there is a LOT of digital diving during sound creation. This is NOT a "button-per-parameter" synth... Still, do yourself a favor & grab one (or two!) soon. I think you'll be glad you did!!!...

I purchased an MX88 back in January, but the MX88 and the GATOR case are to heavy for me to haul around. So, I ordered the MX49 because it much lighter and reasonably priced. In my opi ion the MX49 is a good keyboard to own.

This synth is cool! It has all the basic necessities without a lot of knobs. You can use this as a midi controller. One of the highlights is that you can download the Yamaha FM Essential app and use the sound of the MX together! Overall this synth is very easy to use. If you’re starting off as a keyboard player, looking for something light, and something that doesn’t take up space this board is for you. It has great modern and a few vintage sounds too. S/N In order to use the app you don’t have to take the keyboard to a retail store for them to unlock the additional sounds in the app. You can do that on your own and it’s an easy process that takes less than a minute to do.

Bought it because of all the reviews but soon realized the volocity is very limited and from someone who's played expensive and cheap keyboards the Yamaha ypg 235 was a better buy... For less. I wasn't satisfied with this keyboard mostly for that reason also volume is very low, also it doesn't have great piano options it's better as a second keyboard player or someone who travels alot but doesn't mind that the sound of this keyboard doesn't draw u in... NOT A CHURCH KEYBOARD.
