"Presonus Studio One is a winner!!!!!"

I do intend to move to this as my main DAW, replacing what I currently use, which is Nuendo 2.x, which is still great. However, I'm not gonig to spend $1000+ to get an update to Nuendo. I like Nuendo, but I also like my money better. And I want a program that will help me make money as a music professional, not put me in the whole financially before I know if I will make a profit from my investment. To me, Studio One is a stellar DAW workstation that you can't go wrong with if you're looking for a DAW. I love the flow and the layout. It certainly works for me in spades!!!!!
Sound
This DAW sounds very clean and transparent to me. Does not sound very colored or thin from the audio I listened to. DSP'ing sounded natural to me. I have enough professional experience to decide what will work professionally or not. This certainly will for those that have trained ears and are technically skilled.
Features
It has all of the features I would need for audio/midi production and more. Only thing that I wish it did have is the ability to score to video, which is why I score it a "9". You can't import any type of video file .mov, .avi, .mpg, or whatever to score to picture. This of course will not work if you are a film composer of some sort. But regular songwriters and producers could care less about this feature. I'm sure this is probably some feature that they will include in a future update somehow.
Ease of Use
Very, very simple to figure out and understand, without loking at the manual, which I tried to purposely do. The layout is very intuitive and logical for easy workflow. At least it was easy for me, because I've been producing with DAW's since 97'. However, considering that I have used everything since the original legacy Nubus Mac version of Pro Tools and Digital Performer 2.1, I would say that Studio One is very easy to figure out. To be fair, if you have no prior experience with using DAW's on a computer, then it really doesn't matter what app you start out with, there's still going to be a learning curve for you. I just don't think the learning curve for a newbie will be as steep with Studio One.
Quality
This is really important for people to know. At the moment, I own a custom made Pentium D 2.8 ghz/1 gig RAM/ Win XP Pro PC used strictly for music creation that I put together about 4 yrs ago. Studio One played back the bundled Project DEMO without a glitch! In fact, it didn't even get to the 50% cpu performance mark! And if you look at the make-up of all of the channels and tracks in that project, there are many different plug-ins, and s/w instruments going on at once on each channel. Didn't tax my PC one bit. So Im very pleased with the performance of Studio One. It is also highly configurable with whatever audio hardware and controllers you need to use with it. It is very midi smart, and self-intuitive when it comes to setting up initially. Also boots up very fast.
Value
This product is a steal for all that it has to offer. I know that there are some things that Studio One may not have as extensivley when it comes to some advanced audio/midi capabilities as other DAWs. But, I can assure you that none of the things that some people say it doesn't have compared to Logic or Cubase, or whatever is not anything soo extremely important that it would prevent you from still coming up with a professional recording, sequence, or arrangement. Let me remind some people that before Logic was even owned by Apple, and originally by eMagic, there were still hit songs and music production created with it for over a decade. And those DAW versions certainly didn't have all of the features that the current ones have now. Having said that, I feel even that much more confident in how fufilling Studio One will accomplish whatever audio needs you have, regardless of 1 or 2 "special" features in comparison.
Manufacturer Support
I personally called and spoke with someone at Presonus that was able to answer all of my questions and concerns I had as a pre-sales customer and professional. He was more than help and friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to ever call again.
The Wow Factor
Ok here's the honest truth. You could have a brand new Bentley with platinum plated doors and rims, and there would still be someone that will complain that the platinum could shine brighter! That seems to be the mentality of soo many people today, never satisifed, and can always find something wrong. Ok, having said that, let me say this, I think Studio One looks great! I love the color scheme, it's easy on my eyes, and the GUI is scaled proportionally for selecting and locating whatever tools you need while working on a project. I love the way it feels. Forget whether or not it looks like Logic, or PT or, whatever. There are only soo many designs you can create for a modern DAW before it looks like something else. Kind of like collecting different snare drum hits. There are only soo many variations of a snare drum before it still sounds like, a snare drum again...

"Never Going back to Pro Tools!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I would install this on every computer I own even if I had a thousand computers. and if my hard drive crashed and I've exhausted the installs (you get 5 installs) i would buy it again, even at full price. This product has helped me be mroe creative with its super fast workflow and ease of use. ROCK ON PRESONUS!
Sound
Sounds GREAT! pretty much the same quality you'll get from ProTools, Logic, and all the others. When coupled with Presonus hardware, recording and midi functions are a breeze and sound EXCELLENT! Have not used midi controller with it yet (waiting on that to be shipped) but it has a qwerty keyboard controller option that works great if you don't have a midi controller. Virtual instruments are awesome (Presence for keys, Impact for drums, Mojito for synth, and Sample One for samples. Sound Sets are top of the line and they include TONS of sounds!
Features
Features are excellent. everything is drag and drop and everything is a "Single window" feature meaning that everything is there. you don't have to open another program to do mastering or anything else, and S1 Pro even has the best mastering suite I've seen in a DAW. It also allows you to upload your songs to a file sharing website called Soundcloud. The previous review that knocked this program for not having certain features is mostly inaccurate. it actually does have all of those features like QWERTY keyboard mapping of midi notes, 2 screen display, movie scoring, full screen editing functions, and grouping of multiple tracks. These are features in the "Pro" version though, so maybe those guys had the "artist" version. if you buy presonus hardware you get artist free and upgrade for $200 to Pro is WELL WORTH IT! also has the ability to Bounce at faster speeds than the song itself, which pro tools CANNOT do. Also allows you to edit and mess with parameters while the song is playing and/or recording.....another thing you CANNOT do in pro tools
Ease of Use
absolutely user friendly and the user manual is extremely well written and helpful. everything is done in one window and everything is drag and drop, literally EVERYTHING. Probably the easiest of all the DAW's out there. I've tried ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Digital Performer, and Nuendo.....Studio One Pro is the best!
Quality
When it comes to quality of a software product that usually has other factors involved, like RAM and CPU processor speed. I'm running a standard Macbook (not Pro) with 2 gigs ram and 2.6 ghz processor with 500gigs of hard drive space. I've been using the program for about 8 months and have yet to have it crash or freeze on me even when recording 4 vocals and 4 instruments into it at a time. I have noticed that if you disable WiFi on your computer you get a quicker workflow. But either way there have been no unwanted pops or clicks in my audio as of yet.
Value
Seeing as how I got the upgrade for $149 through an online promotion, I can't say that I've ever spent my money on a better product. I was ready to drop $200 on the upgrade but when I checked my email that day, VOILA! i got a coupon! check with them on this, i think they extended it. but I have heard employees at Guitar center that this is the only DAW software that people are actually buying by itself, even avid pro tools users are buying it at full price because they are curious. and then they are hooked!
Manufacturer Support
Haven't had warranty service yet but I have software and hardware from presonus and have called tech support just to ask questions abotu how things work because I'm used to using other programs. So far they have been rather helpful and I never am on hold for more than a few minutes waiting to talk to someone. only thing is, I wish they were open on the weekends. and they have a flaw on their product support page on their website. you log-in and it doesn't recognize that you have logged in. only reason I give support a 9.
The Wow Factor
Probably the sleekest and most aesthetic DAW on the market. Looks great, color scheme is great and virtual instruments and effects windows are easy to look at as well and actually look really cool. this one is SEXY!

"10 Ratings? Not from me!..."

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I had to leave this program for good. I am so happy with Sonar X1 Producer. It really doesn't even Rival either Sonar or Cubase (in my opinion) The ONLY thing I will say is, it is a LITTLE easier to use (if you are just getting started)
Sound
This is where I have a serious issue with this program. I am a tad shocked at the "10 ratings" for the Sound. Here is why: If you want a serious thump in your bass drum to go along with a nice bassline FORGET IT!!! It will draw the power down by the decibel. It will literally take (up to) 2 seconds to rebound. I believe this to be something in the programming of Studio One Pro. I NEVER had this issue until I upgraded.
Features
For the money you can NOT beat the features!
Ease of Use
Drag and Drop for EVERYTHING! All in one window. The ONLY time you ever leave that window is in the "Mastering" program.
Quality
It is really good but that bug that I described is VERY troublesome! You literally have to curtail the way you either write your music OR the levels and EQ of your final mix.
Value
I LOVE the design! It has so many virtual instruments that you won't have to go buy any (other than strings, and horns). For the money it is hard to beat. However, I no longer use this. I now use Sonar X1 Producer. I don't have the gliches I described above.
Manufacturer Support
I own a StudioLive. I have talked to Presonus many times. They DO give you all the support you need. I will warn you though.. Be prepared to be on hold for a LONG TIME...
The Wow Factor
I just can't get past the fact that it has a level ceiling. Here is a hint to Presonus. Let ME decide where my levels should be. Not your program.

"Using Presonus Pro trial right now"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

I am using the trial version of the full-featured Studio One Pro and I think it's awesome. I bought a Yamaha 01v96i mixer a few months ago and it came with Cubase AI. I had no trouble at all setting up Studio One to work with my 01v. I am taking video tutorials on audio engineering and the teaching engineer is using Pro Tools and Studio One. I was stunned at how feature-rich Studio One is, particularly with the Melodyne pitch correction tools and the multi-band compressor. It only took a few hours to learn to use the features I really have to use regularly. I will be exploring this product over the next few weeks, but I am about 99% sure I will purchase the permanent license. This is a great product built with pro-class features and built to compete at the top level of the DAW market. I'm really impressed!

"Excellent Workflow - Considering the Features it currently has in v1.5 Sadly no Workflow benefits for the features is doesn't"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Those who already have purchased "Presonus Studio One" will be very happy with it I know I would if I didn't already use other Standard Daws such as the ones I mentioned earlier. But if I bought it expecting those features to be implemented soon and they weren't then I would be very disappointed. But I would have no right to be because no one promised them to me. I would just be speculating if and when these features would be implemented if at all. That is why I haven't Jumped on board and bought Presonus Studio One But if the standard DAW features that are in all the other Top DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations) Then I would add it to the list of Music making programs I currently own and make it my No1 personal Workstation I like it that much. But don't want to sit around waiting for her to play catch up.
Sound
Same as ProTools, Cubase, Logic, Sonar, Digital Performer, Samplitude etc But how the sound is created and how quickly you can create that sound is determined by two factors - Features and Workflow
Features
Presonus Studio One v1.5 has No Comping features, At all No Freezing Features, To Save CUP or Ram, or Offline Processing No Ability to create Folders,For Clean Workflow to Group Drums Vocals etc No Warping of audio or Anything Like Beat Detective, AudioSnap, or Pitch correction etc Also no Notation if you need it - I don't I use Sibelius but basic notation would come in handy when quickly printing out bass lines and chord sheets for sessions. If you don't know or don't use these features then don't worry about them not being in this software most of the features should be added within the next few paid upgrades version 3 or 4 maybe my guess.
Ease of Use
The WorkFlow is excellent if not the best. But it still has teething Problems No Dual Monitor Display No Full Screen View For Piano Roll, Mixer, or Audio Editing therefore No qwerty Keyboard shortcuts for these windows to display full screen No Multi Lane midi Editing But fi your Looking For a straight forward Midi Audio Sequencer with Decent mastering & built in mp3 & CD export burning this may just be the Program for you
Quality
Everything it does it does with Quality and Style. Well thought out workflow easy to create songs musically and fast. (For the Features it currently has)
Value
Why 7 and not 10 simple: The features I stated above aren't there and they are in Cubase, Logic, Sonar, Digital Performer etc, with different names and workflows so they are pretty standard features in all the other music programs that go for between $399 to $499 but the workflow of those other programs range from excellent to mediocre. And S1's workflow is excellent
Manufacturer Support
Very Good especially the forums there is always an actual employee on there answering questions etc Prob the best friendliest DAW forum there is
The Wow Factor
Very Very Sexy But she needs a bit more character in terms of features and workflow tweaks. I hope she doesn't become arrogant and proud but listen to her customers and adjust a few of the ways she works and dresses up like putting on some PRV Tools & full screen windows and one key shortcuts to open and close them so she is a little bit more friendly cos she is already one of the most beautiful girls at the ball.

"Superior Recording Quality and Extremely User Friendly Interface"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
When I purchased S1 Pro I was brand new to the world of software recording. I started out with the Artist version that came with the interface I bought from Zzounds with the intention of using it with Reaper, due to the price and reviews I had read. Reaper is a great DAW but long story short, I ended up upgrading Artist to S1 Pro and this is now my main DAW. I haven't even considered trying out any other DAWs because I've become comfortable using S1 Pro and there's not really anything that I need that it can't do. I actually still have a lot of learning to do in S1.
Features
It's hard for me to compare this to other DAW's since I'm new to the world of software recording but S1 Pro grants me everything I need for recording. My main instrument in guitar but I also play bass and sing. One thing I'm extremely happy with is the drum loops it comes with. These aren't cheap sounding loops and there are a TON of them! I do wish they had some loops for metal (double bass). The plugins overall are great; I didn't expect this product to come with so many of them. However, since I play mostly metal most of them do not suite me and I use my effects processor instead (POD XT Live going through the interface). In fact, there's a ton of plugins and instruments on here that I don't use (I prefer to just play my instruments with the exception of drums). The drag and drop is nice; it's like working in Windows. If there's any feature I would change it would be for S1 to come with a built-in bridge as currently you cannot use x32 plugins with the x64 version of S1. This isn't a big deal for me since I don't use that many plugins. Also it sometimes freezes with certain plugins; not sure if this is with S1 or the plugin though. Also there are frequent updates to the product which is nice, and updates are always shown in a panel as soon as you open S1.
Ease of Use
This may not apply for most but I'm from the old school standalone digital recorders (my first was the Fostex digital 8 track). It probably wasn't so much Studio One as much as it was the concept of recording software in general, but it took me a while to get the hang of this. However, now that I know what I'm doing for the most part, I use it with ease (and I still haven't used even half of the features). I'm a plug-in-and-play kinda guy; whereas it was frustrating for me in the beginning, I can quickly connect to S1 and immediately start recording. The navigation and layout is fairly simple and there's pretty much every keyboard short cut you can think of.
Quality
I'd give S1 Pro a 10 for quality. My tracks are crystal clear, not weird noises or anything and it seems to always run smooth. I haven't had any problems with S1 thus far.
Value
It's definitely worth the price in my book. Not to mention you can install it on up to 5 computers. I don't ever see me needing all 5 but it's nice to have.
Manufacturer Support
I've never used the actual support for S1 Pro but the forums have a wealth of information and people in there are extremely helpful. I've been able to find the answer to every question I've had quickly. There's only one question that was never answered and it was related to a particular plugin I was trying to use that was giving me a hard time.
The Wow Factor
I'm not so much into the appeal of a product but I will say that I was enticed by looking at several Youtube videos of people using S1 Pro; it seems really easy to use and I could see that it did everything I needed it to do, which was a determining factor for me (I always research stuff like this before I buy it). For that reason, I give it a 10.

"Absolutely Amazing."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Not a whole lot to say on overall. As this product is just amazing.
Sound
Compared to the other DAW's that I've used such as Sonar and Cubase. PreSonus has just as good of sound if not better in my opinion. It's full and rich.
Features
The fact that Studio One is all drag and drop makes it a breaze. You don't really need anything beyond the included plugins. But if you have your own collection of Vst's that you would like to use it supports those too.
Ease of Use
Very easy to use. Much easier to jump right into. More so than any other DAW. Drag and drop makes it nice and easy.
Quality
The quality is unrivaled from what I can tell. it's a small program. Doesn't take up gigabytes like Sonar or Cubase. It only takes something like 300MB when installed. Overall quality of Studio One for sound, ease of use, and features is amazing for a first run DAW from PreSonus.
Value
Can't really beat it.
The Wow Factor
I have it. I love it.
