"‘61 Specs For Hundreds Less!"

I rarely write reviews, but after seeing the only other one being somewhat negative, I had to offer an alternative view. I picked this up last month and I haven’t put it down (other than to sleep!) since. The finish is flawless, the neck feels perfect — not too thin, not a baseball bat, and the 61 pickups sound absurdly good through my AC15, my Princeton, or my old vintage 12 watt Valco. Now, in the weeks since I bought it, they’ve released new ‘61 models — aside from the color, the locking tuners, and the knobs, they’re the same guitar on paper. To test that, I went to a local store and played one — mine is just as good — the sound and the feel is virtually identical, but it comes in a way cooler color and costs a few hundred bucks less. You can’t go wrong! The regular 2019 SG Standard, on the other hand, is a very different guitar. It has the batwing pickguard, 57 Classic pickups, and comes in a soft case. This version has the hard shell and every other spec the more expensive ‘61 models have, aside from the reflector knobs, which would cost you like 15 bucks to change. The locking tuners are an upgrade to me, but I’m sure you could find tulip buttons for a few bucks if you really wanted to. People love to say negative stuff about Gibson guitars, but this guitar is an absolute winner, full stop. And you know zZounds will take care of you in the unlikely event of a problem.

Now first a disclaimer! I must be clear, I am a neophyte when it comes to guitars! So, I don't know all the technical lingo! I can say, that I truly enjoy playing this guitar! I checked out A LOT of guitars, before I picked this one. I did so because it had pretty good reviews, it was the right price, and I have small hands. For me, it's a great fit! The tones are woody and warm. I really love the way it sounds in general! There's one thing I'm not sure of, and that's the switch. It sounds sometimes like it shorts out. Please don't FREAK OUT! I DON'T even know what all it does, and how it works with the pots! I also have a cheap old (NOT from zZounds!) Amp! So I know nothing about why it sounds that way to me! I can say though, that it's saaaweeeeet! I go to bed at night giddy, cuz I know on the morrow, I'll get to play it some more! The neighbors don't complain, and that's saying a lot about the tonal beauty of this axe! What REALLY is the star here, is zZounds itself! I dreamed for 50 yrs about having a guitar, and they made it happen with pay as you play! This is a company quite focused on getting guitars in the hands of musicians. They have EXCELLENT customer service, answer emails quickly, and are very friendly. This is a company with true heart! I would NEVER buy from anywhere else! I am a lifetime customer, and I thank them from my heart.

Gibson FINALLy redeemed themselves , from the reputation of charging outrageous prices for slapped together garbage that needs hundreds of dollars in luthier repairs , to make it play. I have a 1999 natural explore. An 83 Flying V , 76 SG , 94 classic LP 1960 , 2001 epiphone firebird 7 ,that’s been modded with les Paul black beauty pots and caps and SD PUs. This guitar is off the hook . finish is flawless. Feels SO good. Action was typical , took 10 seconds to get her where I wanted her. The fret board was dry as a popcorn fart, so I oiled it up and she absorbed it perfect Plugged it in , tuned her up. Black star HT 5 Settings. Reverb 11 o’clock ISF. 7 o’clock Treble. 12 o’clock Miss. 11 o’clock Bass. 9 o’clock Volume. 3 o’clock Drive. 11 o’clock. Bridge volume at 8 Bridge tone at. 6 or 7 It sustains for EVER. It’s smooth violin top end. The bottom end gets crunchy as applejacks , It growls like a pit bull. Literally can’t put it down.

"The end of an era?"

On paper it looks good; decent nut (not the nylon ones from 2017), locking tuners, solid pickups out of the box, and unique finish. Not a fan of the knobs or lack of pickup selector ring. The knobs are cheap enough and it actually comes with the selector ring, just not installed. It also comes with a sweet multi tool. Now for the bad: it feels and plays fine but this is easily the worst finish I've ever seen. Anywhere that there's a bevel the finish was checking straight out of the box. It is super sloppy around the neck joint as well. There is an unfinished spot and there's glue all over the end of the fretboard where it meets the the neck pickup.I'm on the fence with this one; I may send it back. I do like SGs with the half pickguard since pickups are easier to swap. I also wouldn't mind having a guitar to kind of just throw around, however I feel bad about paying $1400 for a "beater". I truly hope this is the end of an era for Gibson; the overall quality on this one is rough, ESPECIALLY for an exclusive.

"Sounds great Butt!"

The volume pots and tone pots were not put in level. So when you raise your levels the knobs wobble and the pick up switch is cheap meaning I have epiphanies with better switches. It feels like it’s gonna pop into the middle position. Oh when I took the plate off the back there was so much dust from wood grinding it was not nice. I like Gibson but if I ever buy another it will be in a brick and mortar where I can see when I’m getting and I know I’ll be able to come back and make it right. zZounds just tells you to call Gibson. They have no knowledge of what they are selling. At least my sale.
