Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar (with Soft Case)

For absolutely classic, searing rock tone, look no further than the Gibson SG Standard. Its mahogany body and 490 pickups create long sustain and tonal bite.

"Welp, I’m in love with this Gibson"

I received mg SG yesterday, intiatially I was going to wait awhile to write this review until I’ve really had a chance to bond with it but it’s already happened. I chose the Heritage Cherry, and I’m really glad that I did because it just shows off how aesthetically beautiful that this instrument really is. I could not find a flaw at all on it anywhere. It literally is perfect, the hardware was also snug and everything well aligned. I’ve been hesitant to buy anything new from Gibson because of the horror stories that I’ve heard about their past issues. Definitely not the case with this one at all. Setup right out of the box was low and is exactly where I would’ve want it set at anyways. From the pickups to the action everywhere on the neck it is absolutely flawless and is the easiest playing guitar I have by far. I own an 1988 Les Paul Custom, 1972 Fender Strat, 2011 Fender Telecaster and a 2020 PRS Custom 24. Speaking of well playing, this guitar is resonant AF not even plugged in. Was worried it’d be rather lifeless due to the low weight of the guitar but I was wrong. Plugged in, she is a beast. Loud and articulate. Sounds fantastic and the controls are so responsive. All in all, I am so happy with this buy and can’t wait to get another Gibson in the future hoping I have the same luck.Only thing I am not happy with is getting a gig bag for such a high end instrument. I mean, it’s useable but it should definitely come with the SG hard case. Buy this guitar!

"The Gibson SG is a Boss"

I’ve had several different quality brand guitars over the past few years, and I feel like the build quality on all of them is very good. However, when you play a Gibson, you’ve got the real deal. This is my first SG and the light weight is fantastic, it makes my two Les Paul‘s feel like boat anchors, and they both have the modern weight relief! The rosewood neck and frets are perfect; I prefer locking tuners, but these hold their tune very well. The paint and overall finish is excellent, and finally I love the smell of the nitrocellulose. I have a Les Paul Standard which cost $1,000 more than the SG and I can’t hear the difference in price or quality. The 490R and 491T pickups have a great classic rock sound; the low end is not muddy and they’re very full and rich. And finally, the SG is played by the great Angus Young! What more do you need!

I recently purchased this Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry and cannot find enough words to express my pleasure. Like always zZounds came through with excellent service. I have owned Gibson SG’s before but this one is particularly special. I have not been able to find anything negative or any flaws about the quality or the sound and it sustains forever. The thin neck and light weight body feel great, is very comfortable and fun to play. I have a Gibson Les Paul Classic that I use for shows and this is the perfect backup guitar and might actually compete for the number one spot with the LP. It did come with a nice but soft case so I purchased a new Gibson SG hard shell case (brown with red interior) from zZounds as well and was again very pleased with it as well. I’ve been playing guitar for over 50 years now, have owned countless guitars and could not be more happier with this SG and the hard shell case. I have made quite a few purchase from zZounds over the last few years and they have come through for me once again. I give a 10+ for sure!

1st let me just say how awesome zZounds is!!! Ordered my guitar on Friday 3/31/23 at around 5:20pm and it arrived Saturday 4/1/23 at 1:00pm. Talk about fast shipping!!! Less than 24 hours. Now the guitar....FLAWLESS!! Fit and finish is perfect. Setup is perfect right out of the box, exactly how I like my guitars to be setup. The Heritage Cherry is stunning in person, pics don't do it justice. I was leaning towards the Ebony at first but so glad I got the Heritage Cherry. The soft case is actually a lot nicer than I expected. It's like a hybrid of hard case and soft. Very well padded and premium materials/craftsmanship. I conditioned the fretboard, tuned it up and plugged it in. It rocks!! I'm beyond pleased with my purchase and with zZounds 18 month no credit check payment plan it's very affordable. This is my 6th guitar from zZounds and I'm sure I'll be back for more.

My first SG! Nice light thin comfy-contoured body. Clear chords and singing notes from these 490's. Gibson seems to be on top of the QC. The Ebony model I chose has zero defects or build issues that I can find, (plus it looks like rock n roll)!!No extra set-up needed, played just right out of box.Soft case is wayyyy nicer & thicker than folks are saying. I actually prefer it over the Hardshell version.

Ordered this a few weeks back. I was expecting a 2023 SG Standard. What I got was a “new” 2021 that had been shelved for 2 years. No complaints with the guitar itself, but specs change year to year (Gibson is notorious for it), and other sellers sell previous model years at a discount sometimes. If I’d known I was going to receive a “brand new” 2 year old guitar, I might have ordered from another retailer.

"Sent It Back"

I didn't like the angle the neck was set at on this guitar. It caused the bridge, tail piece and bridge pickup to have to be raised unusually high off the body. It didn't affect the playability of the guitar but it just didn't look right to me. A couple of other minor issues: The neck pickup was loose and rattling around in the body cavity and there was glue left on the fretboard where they glued in the nut. I didn't care for the sound of the guitar played through my rig but that could have been a set up issue rather than the pickups. I liked the feel of the neck, the lightness of the body and the "pleked" fretboard played very well. The nitro finish looked very nice and allowed the fine grain of the cherry stained mahogany to stand out beautifully. I spent a few minutes playing the guitar trying to decide if it was worth keeping despite the afore mentioned issues when I discovered a small crack running from the treble side of the nut into the neck. That clinched it for me. I boxed it up and contacted zZounds for a return authorization. I was also a little disappointed that, at this price point, the guitar didn't come with a hard case. The soft case looked very nice and would be handy for quick trips around town but it does not offer the same level of protection as a hard case so I would have to buy one which would be an extra $200.00. Also, I noticed that the red plush interior of the soft case was shedding red lint all over the guitar and seemed to be causing some light "swirling" to occur on the nitro finish. Gibson is charging a pretty penny for their guitars these days and for the price these are going for I expect better QC a proper hard case when purchasing a USA made Gibson standard. YMMV

First I would like to start by saying zZounds is second to none in terms of customer service. I ordered 3 different SG specials and was not able to find a good one, but zZounds was more than willing to help me along my journey to find a good SG. I eventually gave up on the special and ordered a black standard which is perfect in every way. It came flawless, perfectly setup from the factory, and feels amazing to play. The tone is just like my SG tribute which I also love. I can't recommend zZounds enough, and I won't shop anywhere else now.

"Classic Gibson sg humbucker tone"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
All of the great sg with humbuckers tone is definitely in this guitar. Angus buck dharma Tipton randy Holden Krieger blackmore Graham Oliver all played this particular model of sg and now its available to the masses. I got mine in blemished ebony finish but couldn't find any flaws. Overall I am happy with this purchase and would recommend this guitar if you're looking for a good Gibson sg but want all of the fancy appointments that upper mid range to higher end Gibson SGs have like the sg standards reissue and the custom shops have like block inlays and binding
Sound
Like I said before all of the full pickguard sg player tone is there from buck dharma (my main influence) Angus young Glenn Tipton Krieger and iommi are all there in this guitar.
Features
Nothing is wrong with this guitar. I wish the full pickguard sgs had whammy bars like Robby Krieger or the Angus young signature models have but you're going to pay top dollar for those models. Other than that I can live without a whammy bar
Ease of Use
Plug and play. I am currently playing through a battery powered laney mini super group amp but in the near future I will buy either a Marshall studio 20 plexi combo an origin 5 combo an older Mesa boogie subway rocket reverb combo or a Hughes and kettner 25th combo
Quality
Well made better made than my set neck dean gran sport I purchased earlier this year
Manufacturer Support
Never had to deal with them but when I did I got someone on the phone and they were nice

The fit and finish, like all Gibson’s isn’t perfect. The guitar does though look and feel wonderful! After some minor adjustments with pickup height the 490s sound pretty good. The guitar did not come set up very well...but it was an easy fix! All in all....this is an awesome axe that easily achieves any tone between AC/DC, Zep, Greta van fleet and some real bluesy stuff too! Actually I haven’t Play the genre that I can’t cover at this point. Saying it’s versatile would be an understatement. If you want a guitar that is solid quality, sounds good and feels good in the hand....buy this.

This is the best Gibson I’ve ever played and owned. The neck is perfect. Fat and wide but not over kill. I have xxl hands and this is the stuff. 490 bridge rates a 10….490 rhythm rates a 6.5 . If this had the 59 like my anniversary Les Paul the best sounding rhythm pickup. It would be just about perfect. Soft case is decent. Stays in tune, nice and light

ive always wanted the Gibson SG. I was knee high to a the first time watched Angus Young duck walk across the stage with his axe and it was at that exact moment i knew exactly what my dream guitar was going to be. Almost twenty years into my ventures of learning to play, i finally bit the bullet and treated myself and i must say i am not disappointed. I have a modified american fender telecaster which i love dearly, and its still my go to guitar to start every gig, but when its time to bust out the SG. It takes me to an entirely different level. Lightweight, incredible tones, durable, and as sexy as Margo Robbie. i love my SG and i will have it for the rest of my life. Hats off to Gibson for making this product feel like it was specifically made for me.

This is a great guitar. It came out of the box a little dirty. But it cleaned up very nice, no need for a setup. The action is perfect, not a scratch on the guitar. I'm very happy with mine .
