This bass is more beautiful in person. I ordered the sunburst. I really wanted a passive bass. I’ve recently got into more jazz fusion music and wanted a jazz bass. There are some pretty cool tonal options, maybe not as much as a more expensive jazz bass. I couldn’t say, this is the first jazz bass I’ve owned. But I think any bass player could dial in a tone on this bass that they liked. It’s simple but nice. I think a bass is better off being simple. I didn’t think I would like the wider neck as I’ve only played slim Ibanez Basses. But I actually am loving this wider neck. The back of the neck is almost flat so it makes for better playability. It has a very fast fluid neck. I don’t know how it would sound with a live band being a passive instrument but I am sure with the right amp and equipment you could get the perfect volume and sound. Overall I’m very happy with this instrument.

I'll start with the bad, working at a music store, I've played a ton of basses fresh from the factory and this worst factory setup I've ever encountered. The action was ridiculously high, the pickups were ridiculously low and the intonation was out. I don't know what's going on down there in the Ensenada factory, but they need to either train or fire whoever is setting up the basses there. But while I really wanted to get down with this bass right out of the box, what's a half-hour of setup when you score a bass of this quality for such a reasonable price? This bass is solid!I've never understood how it came to be that 90% of the 5-strings out there are active, but if I want a pre-amp, I can get a much better pre-amp outside my bass than having a bunch of solid state pre-ampery inside my bass and being forced to rely on a fresh 9-volt for every gig. This bass is passive and that's exactly how I like it.Most of your tone is in your fingers. I've seen videos of Jaco being handed random basses and it still sounded like Jaco. This bass sounds like the classic Fender Jazz. It plays nicely (once you set it up) and whether it's slap or finger-style, with a minimum of knob tweaking all you need to do is play it and you'll get a killer sound out of it.

The tone is awesome. My most played bass is my Ibanez BTB 767. This 5 stringed is a perfect addition to my bass family. Fender basses have their own unique tone. This one is awesome.
