This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
This guitar was a huge surprise when I opened the box. I have had it for 4 months now and it is still a surprise everytime i take it out of the case. Visually it is beautiful. But the true test came when I plugged it in and tuned it. Very nice sound, the Gibson Pickups give a wide range of tone and with the Coil Tapping capability the range is limitless. The guitar stays in tune with the Grover tuners. The neck is attractive with the mother of pearl and abalonie inlays, and stainless steel frets. It is a great affordable guitar built with excellent quality, well worth the investment.
Sound
The sound quality is excellent whether you are playing clean twangy country or crunching out some hardcore metal, this guitar will handle it all.
Features
The Grover tuners are awesome, they hold a tune very good, way better than the cheaper guitars I was used to. The Gibson Pickups put out a very wide range of sounds, the Coil Tapping capability is an excellent feature.
Ease of Use
Very easy to play, sits well if you are sitting on a stool and hangs good on a strap for stand up play. It is a little heavy if you are used to a lighter cheaper guitar, but after a couple weeks it is no longer an issue.
Quality
The guitar is very well made, one of the nicer Epiphone I have ever seen. All good quality hardware and the finish is superb.
Value
This guitar is worth every penny of its selling price, which is very reasonable and affordable.
Manufacturer Support
Reason for low rating on this topic, I Have not had any reason to contact Epiphone about this instrument.
The Wow Factor
The quality for the price. I have always played cheap couple hundred dollar guitars. I decided I wanted an upscale Epiphone to replace my Cheap beginner Epiphone, after doing a lot of homework and review reading, this is the one I chose. It is a very attractive price, and when side by side with the Cheap one, they look like two different guitars except for the Les Paul body style, this one is way better built, with higher quality, a set neck, unlike the bolt on of the other, better hardware and it feels like you have something in your hands. Plus Zzounds made it possible for me to jam with the play as you pay option.

One of the best guitars I own.......period.
Sound
I like the pickup selection for this guitar. The pickups are very responsive. I have owned a couple mixed sets of Burstbuckers (ones, twos, threes, and pros) as well as the 57 classics which I still have and use regularly. In comparison to those pickups, the 490R and 498T hold their own. I tend to be a little more about finding my tone, as opposed to copying others tone. That said, I find the combination to be versatile and well suited to my needs. Of course the body, weight, scale, neck and other factors also lend a lot to the sound. In that regard, this guitar has an overall pleasing sound to my ears.
Features
I love the coil tap and the 24-fret neck. I don't care much for the control knobs and will probably change them, though they seem to be of fine quality. The pickup selection sounds good coil-tapped. The neck has the slim-taper D profile, which I fell in love with when I bought my 60's Tribute Plus. Feels great and plays very smooth to the touch.
Ease of Use
Pretty straight forward. Set it up, tune it, play it.
Quality
Overall, this s a very well made Epiphone. However, I felt that the binding and fretwork could have looked a lot better on mine. Though the feel is there, it looks like a caveman fitted the frets and binding. There are some small scratches on the fingerboard at the last fret. The paint seems to have slightly went over the binding in some spots. Normally I would have returned it right away, but I could not stop playing it. That's a good sign so I'm keeping it. Had this guitar been a Gibson I would have pitched a fit and called zZounds and the manufacturer. Luckily for them, I buy Epiphone because I play the hell out of my guitars.
Value
I believe it is worth the selling price for sure. Real mother of pearl inlays (mixed in with Abalone designs on some frets), 24-frets, satin finish neck, and Gibson pickups? Very well worth the money. This thing could handle a a Gibby studio any day.
Manufacturer Support
Never had to deal with them once in years.
The Wow Factor
I bought the sunburst finish so the look can be very polarizing with the quilted maple veneer. It seems that you either love it or you don't, and I love it. Looks a little different than the picture, but that's not a bad thing as every guitar is unique.

Received this guitar two days ago and just now have time to write a review because I couldn’t put it down. The Gibson pick ups sound incredible and the neck is by far the most comfortable one I own. I picked the burst model and the finish and binding are flawless and the gold hardware is the cherry on top. This guitar easily compares to a Gibson Les Paul that would sell for three times the price! I can’t comment on Epiphone’s support because this is my third one and I’ve never had to call them. Thanks zZounds for same day shipping and making it easy to use your twelve payment plan. Went smoothly from start to finish and took less that 20 mins to complete. I’m once again pleased with your service. You continue to earn all of my gear business.

Amazing guitar. The neck is smooth and was set up perfect right out of the box. I could go on and on but here is the quick, smooth down and dirty review. BUY ONE!!! I purchased a blemished model mainly out of curiosity. When I opened up the box I checked the guitar over like I was back overseas trying to make a decision on who, well anyway, I have not yet found the blemish which would justify the $200 discount. Maybe it was the cheesy waxy strings? Hey, I'm good with that. They get changed right away so no worries there. zZounds has come through again. Thank you!!!!

It is very well setup right out of the case mine was even in tune except the g string of course lol but i was kinda let down by the pickups they are the reason i bought this model and my first reaction is that the probuckers in my plus top pro are way better suited to my style of music these have a twangy country sound to them they do sound decent tho dont get me wrong i love the satin finish neck the inlay work "the other reason i bought this" and the finish is great the frets are polished way better then the plustop pro was tge whole setup is much better then the plustop but thats not a deal breaker for me i love to set up all my guitars this one is no exception i wouldnt care if it didnt even have strings cause i always change them do a complete setup and put 9s on every guitar i own if it needs it or not i am totally pleased with everything except the pickups and im hoping they will grow on me they sound good dont get me wrong just not what i expected.

"Good & Bad"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

Played a Strat for years, but wanted a Les Paul even longer, just couldn't justify the expense. Found this Epi online and did a lot of research. Seemed like the guitar for me and I've been generally happy with it. After adjusting the action-way too high-it plays much better . The pickups are ok but the neck humbucker is a little bassy for me. If I have a issue with this guitar it is in the asthetics. Obviously produced in China, there are a lot of small imperfections that would have made me leave it at the store. The neck up by the body isn't finished properly, the inlays on the fretboard look nice, but have pits and blemishes. The strap buttons aren't screwed in straight and the pickup controls are crooked. Also, the pickup selector is half sideways and very stiff. Not deal breakers, but minor annoyances that I will learn to put up with over time. Probably the last time I will buy online though.

Mahogany body, maple cap, 490/498 Gibson USA pickups that wail. Mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard, 60s profile, 22 frets. Looks great sounds like a Nashville Gibson Les Paul to me, however the pickups are well suited to harder music that the standard '57 pat or '57 plus. The prophecy bridge screams Duncan JB output into the crowd. Riffs and solos great in any position, depending on style and attitude... For those about to rock, we salute you.,Try it and you'll buy it.

"Most Bang for Your Buck"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
This is one GREAT guitar. I ordered it online and so I was a bit anxious about buying it sight unseen. I pulled it out of the case and inspected it for any scratches or dings or any of the quality problems mentioned in some of the other reviews and could find nothing. The guitar is beautiful and flawless. I tuned it and it plays great right out of the box. The action could be a little tighter at the bottom towards the bridge, but it's not bad by any stretch. It is a very playable guitar. The Gibson pickups make this guitar a classic rock machine. The coil tap switches (which I would rarely use) are a nice touch that give you a lot of versatility. I would put this guitar up against any Gibson Les Paul studio. It looks and plays better. This is the best bang for your buck. I have been looking for a Les Paul for a couple of decades. I just never could work it in to the budget. This ain't a Gibson, but it got real close for a couple of thousand less.
Sound
The Gibson pick ups make this babe a screamer. The same great fat rich sound that you look for in a Les Paul, only at 1/2 of the price.
Features
The neck on this guitar is extremely comfortable and easy to play on, The coil taps are a nice touch, though I don' see myself using it that much. I love the knobs. I think it makes it look a lot better than the traditional speed knobs. Comes from the factory with strap locks, which is a huge deal to me. I've put after market strap locks on all of my guitars.
Ease of Use
Plays great right out of the box. Tune it and go. The only thing I might do eventually is lower the action on the lower part of the neck. It's good where it is, but that is the only thing about this guitar that I can see that could be improved.
Quality
This guitar is well put together. No visible flaws. No electronic problems.
Value
This is the best guitar you will find for the money. To get one better you'll need a couple thousand more than you'll pay for this one.
Manufacturer Support
No dealings with them yet. Hopefully it will stay that way
The Wow Factor
It's a beauty. I opened the case and was blown away. The quilted top and gold hardware just jump out at you as soon as the the case opens. I think it's one of the best looking guitars on the market.

I have ordered two of these guitars from zZounds and had to return them because of major issues with the necks being warped. The other issue was with the pickup selector not being wired correctly the bridge was the neck and the neck was the bridge. The only good thing about the guitar was the pickups sound great Epiphone would not do anything about the issues no would not recommend to anyone.

I'm 63 years old so this is only going to appeal to a small click of people.Anyways,to me this is the perfect LP.My favorite things about it are the non- weight compensated body, and the Gibson USA pickups. In other words it's heavy like a 1960's,1970's era LP.,and has a great Paul Kossoff/ Bad Company sound.I play Southern Fried Blues, mostly Duane Allman type stuff, without the slide, but keeping the crunch, and tone.People talk about "tone machine",when really they mean loud machine..This is more a tone machine. The extra weight, gives you that violin, cello, type tone, almost 3 dimensional, like the 1970's models. The closest I can get is the hardtail LP Jeff Beck used on his "Blow by Blow"album.Fit and finish is good, but again,it's not a Gibson.I got the heritage cherry, and swapped out the knobs for gold witch hats, and added an antique white rhythmn/treble round plate. The neck is of course longer,so a pickguard is not gonna fit.Oh...!One very importatnt thing. The neck on the GX is ROSEWOOD,the neck on the EX,is Ebony.Epiphone states this very clearly on Brian Asbys' promo, the trick is to listen!Remember, rosewood necks need some oil every month.I use a Beeswax, and lemon oil combo. If you play blues,or cover 70-80's kinda stuff it's a great choice,at a great price.Don't be afraid to get out a screwdriver, and customize your pickups, that's what makes your sound unique!

I just recieved my GX last week and it already has this familiar, broken in feel.I'm sure that I'm not playing any better, but definitely faster. The tonality alone is worth the extra bucks.A lot of idiot info is on youtube, and I guess some teenager, has shared with the rest of the world, the ebony fretboard thing.Read this junior,if you can...EBONY on the EX,ROSEWOOD on the GX.Simple for those of us with a GED.Anyway a great non-weight compensated LP.(that means it's heavy)USA Gibson HB's,a huge radius, ans great finishes,Lots of other goodys give it a dead ringer chunk of tone from 1968.Buy one!

I a little shocked at the Epiphone company ( The Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom) I,ve brought about 3 different guitars (Epiphones a Les Paul Classic, Les Paul Custom ans a ES375 Jazz guitar) and I was really quite satisfied with all 3.Now I know this Prophecy is not a "Gibson" but Lawd! this guitar the white trim part looks really cheap! and it feels cheap as far the action (compared to the other 3 this guitar?) Now this is just my own personal opinion" Epiphone must be trying to get rid of or discontinue this particular model.

The wiring seems backwards. The pickups that is. Very noisy guitar. Lot of buzz when plugged in. And the frets stick out just a hair off the neck. I bought an epiphone les paul standard a couple years ago and it was awesome. This one was a little disappoi nting. The color was great. I really liked the look and "overall" playability of the guitar. But dont like the thing mentioned above. I play semi pro and my band plays a lot.
