The Beatstep Pro is easily the best purchase I’ve made in a long time. This controller has a ton of uses/functionality. I personally use it as a drum machine within Ableton. You have a pad on the beatstep pro assigned to a pad within ableton and trigger your drums sounds using the beatstep pros step sequencer. If you want to use your own drum sounds in your daw, I don’t know a better option. Thanks zZounds!

"Fun unit with fatal design flaw"

I purchased the Beastep Pro about a year ago, and I've used it in my bedroom studio occassionally for brainstorming drum and sequencing ideas. I've never used it in a live performance setting so it does not travel. First impressions would lead a person to feel that this sequencer is "built like a tank" and it is, it has a nice weight to it and a metal chassis. All pads and knobs are very responsive and seem durable. It's really great fun once you get the hang of it. A few weeks ago, I had it hooked up to my daw with a couple other MIDI controllers, which is my typical setup. The Beatstep Pro seemed to be sending MIDI information that made everything go haywire. My other MIDI controllers were behaving strangely while the BSP was plugged in, but they returned to normal when I unplugged it. The BSP made my DAW behave strangely, collapsing menus and switching rapidly between session and arrangement view, wich resolved when I shut it off and unplugged the USB. I found I can no longer use the BSP as my clock, it drifts all over the place and doesn't stay in sync with clips. I tried all the troubleshoots, hard reset, firmware update, reinstalling ableton live. I even tried a few other DAWs, and also tried on another computer. All were plagued with the same problem. After doing some research online, there appears to be a weakness in the micro USB port in the back of the unit. Quite a few BSP owners describe their port becoming loose easily from the motherboard. There are youtube videos explaining how to solder the USB cable to the motherboard to get it working again. This appears to have been a known problem with this unit, and the symptoms of this problem are consistent with what I am currently experiencing. I am still under warranty with Arturia and currently jumping through a lot of hoops to prove to them that this unit is defective because of their design flaw, and not "user error." So far I've sent a very descriptive email to Arturia explaining the BSP behavior and all the troubleshooting I've done on my own. They asked me to send in a video showing the problems, and I did, along with a video showing that the problems are present on another computer. They now sent me a lengthy troubleshooting email full of everything I've already done. Needless to say I am frustrated and also worried that they won't repair/replace my BSP, even though I am under warranty and it's a flaw in their design. I do not remove the cable from the back of the unit often, but even if I did, you shouldn't have to worry about a port coming loose from the motherboard. I honestly cannot recommend this product, as fun as it is when it's actually working. Do not buy.
