Buying Guide: Wireless Microphones for Video

Wireless Microphones for Video Production

Looking to add wireless mics to your video rig? In this guide, you'll find wireless microphone systems and components that are well-suited for shoots. Most video-focused wireless mic systems include at least one battery-powerable wireless receiver, and at least one wireless transmitter/microphone element.

Wireless Receivers:
For shooting video, you'll want a portable receiver that can be mounted on a camera, roll around set in a sound cart, or hang out in your audio bag and feed a portable recorder. Unlike larger receivers that are meant to be rack-mounted and plugged into a wall, wireless receivers made for videography are lightweight, mobile, and most importantly battery-powerable.

Wireless Transmitters and Mic Elements:
On a film/video set, you'll find a wide variety of wireless transmitters and mic elements. There are lavalier microphones that clip to talent's clothing, often with a tiny mic element connected by a thin cable to a bodypack transmitter about the size of a deck of cards. There are handheld mics with a wireless transmitter built into the handle, which an interviewer can carry and easily point toward themselves and their subject. And there are plug-on XLR transmitters that plug onto the output of a standard XLR mic, turning a wired mic into a wireless mic -- you can even put one on the end of a boom pole, and free the boom operator from wrangling a long cable.
Rode Wireless Microphones for Video
Rode is a leader in affordable wireless microphones for video production, starting with the entry-level Rode Wireless ME systems. For more pro features, step up to the versatile midrange Rode Wireless GO system and top-of-the-line Rode Wireless PRO system, both of which include built-in recording capabilities directly on the microphones! These Rode systems all run on the 2.4 GHz band.
Shure Wireless Microphones for Video
Part of Shure's SLX-D and SLX-D+ wireless families, the Shure SLX-D and SLX-D+ Portable series are centered around the Shure SLXD5 and SLXD5+ portable wireless receivers. These receivers pair with your choice of Shure SLX-D or SLX-D+ handheld, bodypack, or plug-on transmitters to create a robust wireless system that's a perfect fit for video shoots. SLX-D and SLX-D+ systems transmit 24-bit digital audio on the UHF band -- a great choice if you plan to run several simultaneous channels.

Ideal for content creators who shoot on smartphones, Shure's MoveMic lavalier mics can send audio directly to a phone, tablet, or computer via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for a standalone wireless receiver. Add the optional dual-channel MoveMic receiver to capture up to two MoveMic lavaliers' audio to a DSLR camera or recorder.

Sennheiser Wireless Microphones for Video
Sennheiser's popular EW-D wireless family includes the EW-DP series, all based around the portable, rechargeable-battery-powerable EW-DP EK wireless receiver which can mount on a camera or hang inside an audio bag. With handheld mic, lavalier mic/bodypack, and plug-on XLR options for transmitters, it's easy to put together an EW-DP wireless system that's up to the task of any shoot. These systems transmit 24-bit digital audio on the UHF band.

Another pro-grade option for videography: Sennheiser's AVX wireless systems, which feature a tiny receiver that plugs directly into your camera or recorder's XLR input (or 1/8" input, using the included adapter). Sennheiser AVX wireless runs on the 1.9 GHz band, a less crowded part of the radio spectrum compared to the 2.4 GHz band that's home to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Audio-Technica Wireless Microphones for Video
