"A Beast Of A Synth"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I've owned my Blofeld since 2010 and it's still one of my favorite synths, especially for pads and for creating wildly chaotic sounds for experimental electronic music. That's not to say that the Blofeld isn't capable of other sounds. For the money, this synth is one of the most versatile synths available to this day. You can make screaming leads, thundering analog sounding basses, subtle electric pianos, pounding percussion. Because of its versatility, I would recommend this synth to anyone who needs a versatile and powerful synth especially for studio or home recording, and even for live performance. However, I probably wouldn't recommend it as a first or beginner synth unless you're patient and are willing to grow with it...it's an incredibly deep synth and years later you'll still be discovering new features. The 16 part multi mode is awesome but could be made easier to use. Still, you can make an entire set on the Blofeld without much need for a computer playing for example pads, leads, drums, bass, and arps at the same time! Better yet now you can store your multi-sets and for performance that's really indispensable as you can be ready for your next song with all sounds loaded almost immediately. Go another step, hook up a computer with Logic or Ableton for example, and have several instruments on Blofeld assigned to various MIDI channels for more complex arrangements. The arpeggiator is incredible and is nearly a sequencer! Ability to load your own wavetables and samples means the complexity and detail of sounds you can make is staggering. Also, it's great to see that Waldorf is still committed to their products years later and Blofeld has recently gotten 2 significant OS firmware updates that have made this synth much more reliable while improving the sound to my ears and even adding features. And, Blofeld has over a thousand presets I think. New soundsets are being created regularly and sound fantastic. If you have some experience with synths the Blofeld is an amazing value, and if your budget is tight but you need a high quality versatile synth that is great at so many things...the blofeld is the synth for you.
