Tannoy Reveal Passive Customer Review

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
This was a solid purchase.
Sound
These monitors are solid performers - especially for the money. I prefer passive speakers - this gives you the flexibility to buy a reference amp (in my case a Hafler 9505) that you can use with a variety of speakers. These Tannoys are small and you should not expect them to deliver deep bass that you can feel. You CAN hear the notes but the designers correctly chose to deliver accuracy over false extension - as many smallish home audio speakers do. Home audio speakers with exaggerated bass are fun for parties and listening casually but these Tannoys are tools. If you must have full range - shop for a larger speaker or add a subwoofer. The distortion level is extremely low - even at high SPL's you can still hear deep into the MIX without the speakers getting confused - up to a point - these are small speakers after all. These speakers also definitely nearfield only - sit farther away and you will lose detail.
Features
Well, it's a two way speaker with a single set of 5 way binding posts. I tend to use extremely large guage speaker cable so I would appreciated bigger binding posts with all metal construction and a seperate pair of posts for woofers and tweeters for bi-wiring or passive bi-amping. Also - tweeter fuses would be nice for peace of mind.
Quality
Surprisingly high at this price point. THICK front baffle - most important panel in a box speaker - the actual drives appear to be very good quality and certainly sound it when fed a quality signal from high quality electronics.
Value
I think these are a great value given the price.
Manufacturer Support
No experience here.
The Wow Factor
These are very good looking speakers IMO. The stylng is original and the finish on my pair is excellent. I already have a pair so wanting is a non-issue.

"BANG FOR BUcks!!!"

Sound
The first set of the reveals I used where in a project studio. At first I felt they were cheap and gave poor imaging of audio material. It was only when we compared our production to some BBC materials that I saw the potential of these monitors (the BBC studios use Genelic). They don't sound too refined, but I think that's the idea of a good monitoring system. Today I like them alot!!!! Suggest the tannoy sub for extended monitoring of low frequencies...

"I will never buy Tannoy again."

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars

I will never buy Tannoy again.
Sound
Good sound for this price but with monitors this size the bass isn't really accurate. I power them with a Hafler TA 1600 power amp.
Features
Monitors are monitors, not much to say, but Tannoy really could've added 1/4" inputs to these, it would make life much easier.
Quality
It's not worth it -- monitors should be set up once, you shouldnt have to keep adjusting htem. The problem again is that the connection to the monitor keeps slipping and I have to rebalance them far too many times.
Value
These are not worth it because of the constant hassle of rebalancing volumes.

"Great value"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Professional quality for a hobbyist price.
Sound
Excellent, detailed sound. Do not fatigue the ears after long periods as much as some other monitors. Does not have much sub bass response but you should not expect that for a speaker this size, the bass is still clear and precise. Combined with a hafler amp they sound absolutely great, while still being very flat. Small "sweet spot" but the stereo field is excellent when you are in it.
Features
Adjustable bass cutoff might have been good but you can't expect too much for the price.
Quality
quality tannoy components
Value
these are a STEAL for the price.
The Wow Factor
Some of the sexiest monitors I have seen. Original colour. The angled contours on the front of the speaker not only look great, they also help disperse the sound better.
