"Stay away from poor support"

Overall: 2.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I am looking to replace this as soon as I can afford it with a unit capable of recording to higher capacity compact flash cards. This is a deal breaker for me, all the other bells and whistles are nice but when a company refuses to discuss the storage capacity issue any longer they really don't care about the end user and only about their bottom line.
Sound
Low noise floor, sounds very good at 24 bit resolution
Features
if only supporting up 8 gbs is a feature
Ease of Use
quick and easy to get rolling.
Quality
all plastic case, screen scratches easily.
Value
Personally I don't think its worth the money knowing now that the unit does not record past 8 gbs on cards larger than 8gbs. If you try it will lock the unit up, which requires a restart.
Manufacturer Support
Tascam refuses to respond to emails inquiring if they will ever increase the compact flash capacity the unit can handle. This recorder will only record up to 7.99 gbs of data on cards larger than 8 gbs. Save your money and buy a recorder from a company that actually thought ahead about larger capacity cards.
The Wow Factor
I loved it when I bought it, bought a 16 gb CF card when they came out excited to have longer record time at the highest resolution only to be severely disappointed the unit locks up when recording more than 8 gbs of data.

"Excellent product, does what it's supposed to do perfectly, just what I was looking for"

I don't think I'll need a new recorder anytime soon, not just for field recording, but for everything else.
Sound
Excellent sound quality, creates no noise of its own, tested with SE Electronics SE3ST, Shure SM57 and Prologue 14L mics and also using line inputs. I used it to record various ambient and natural sounds, as well as vocals.
Features
It comes with a power adapter, shoulder strap and an excellent bag made exclusively for it - all great. I only wish they included at least one Compact Flash card so people could use it right out of the box. I haven't had an opportunity to test the video sync and timecode input, but all other things work just as expected. Built-in limiter and low cut are just a switch away when needed, and the PS/2 keyboard port is a nice addition.
Ease of Use
The software (1.04) is quick, interface intuitive, the project setup/recording/retaking/deleting process is quick and painless. I have no complaints, it does what it's supposed to do perfect. Manual is OK, but you probably won't even need to look into it.
Quality
I really wish it was made out of metal, but I guess that would probably add to its weight and reduce the portability, which is very important in this case :) The hard plastic is OK, looks solid, doesn't scratch that easily, and the finish is not too glossy. Buttons on the front panel could be just a tad bigger. Display is excellent. Input/output connectors are high quality, no doubt there.
Value
For me, this was the single best investment ever. Even without the timecode/video inputs, it's a great piece of hardware, and definitely worth the money.
The Wow Factor
It's good that classic tascam DAT look. It's hot :)
