Like other reviewers have said, these are seriously lacking in bass. Even on classical recordings I found myself reaching for aftermarket software EQ in order to get a good amount of bass response. However, after making that adjustment, these are some fantastic in-ears. There is a night and day difference between these and the SE 215. These seem to be designed with detail and separation in mind and it's impossible to not notice the difference. This translates to more accurate monitoring, and a clearer picture for a live mix, where something like a 215 would be a harsh mess. As long as you don't need the bass response (and most in ear mixes don't) then these are a serious value and upgrade pick over standard offerings. They are built much better than the 215 as well; you can tell just holding both in your had. I've had 215s fall apart after about 2 years worth of use; I don't see that ever happening with these. Overall they seem to be purpose built for monitoring. Drummers will love them for recording sessions over traditional headphones, as they don't wear you out and feel more natural. Casual use will take some getting used to, or some kind of bass boost or eq on your listening setup. If your current in-ears don't seem to be doing the job, these are likely the cure for that.

"Shure SE-425 earphones"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I have not compared these earphones to other comparable earphones. This review is basically my experience so far with these earphones. These earphones provide very clear sound and are functionally outstanding for use as in ear, on stage monitors. The only area that I feel could be better is the bass response. The bass does track true to the recording and by no means sounds "bad". The bass is deep but "tight". However, if you prefer more bass in your music, these earphones seems to lack a little. Not sure how the competition or the Shure SE-535's compare. Unfortunately, we can't try before we buy. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and would recommend these earphones.

"Amazing Sound"

When I first ordered my 425's I was a little nervous because I read it lacked bass, but I wasn't ready to put out an extra $200 for the next step up. When I got them I was pleasantly surprised; they are amazing. Yes, the base could be stronger, but it's not enough to be a deal breaker. I have an eclectic taste in music so when I received them I put them through the gauntlet. Instrumentals of James Horner, U2, AC/DC, Katy Perry, Lorde, Pitbull, Chilli Peppers, Taylor Swift, Eminem; you name it. Everthing sounded amazing! I have been using earbuds by Bose for the last couple years and these blow them away. The noise cancellation in the 425's are unbelievable. With my Bose I had to turn my iPod up all the way when I would use them cutting my grass. With the 425's I barely turned the volume up and I didn't even hear the lawnmower. I love them. I have also seen people having a problem with the fit or having issues putting them in. When I first used them it did take a bit to properly put them in and adjust them. But now that I'm used to them I put them in just as easy as my last earbuds. They are by far much more secure fit in the ear. As far as comfort, they come with a large selection of options so you can decide what feels the best. I would definitely recommend the 425's.

"Not impressed"

I’ve used a few different in ears over the last few years. I had a set of UM 20 Westones stolen after a show recently. I could not replace them in a timely manner. I ordered the 425 in a pinch. They do not have near the sound quality of the Westone. I have even purchased the Comply foam tips for them and they are still not as good. Unfortunately cannot return them so I’m out some serious coin.

"Not loving it."

I’m super loyal to Shure in-ears but man this is a disappointment. Straight out of the box the right tweeter is rattling, and by my online reading this seems to be a pretty common problem. I’m hoping I’ll be able to get this resolved through their warranty but given what I’ve been finding I’m not hopeful. I loved the 215s and 535s but these just fall short in comparison. I use my headphones a lot for mixing and recording, and these were simply not the right choice for me. Absolutely not for the price. I do enjoy the fit of these. A bit more comfortable to wear. The left one sounds decent, it’s hard to tell with the right throwing me off but the quality does seem pretty good. Hopefully a change of heart is around the corner with customer service, to be determined.

"Worst I’ve ever used."

Overall: 1 out of 5 stars

These are easily the worst in ear monitors I have ever used. I have owned units from Westone, Mee, CCA, and KZ. The Westones were by far the favorites. Followed by the Mee. There is no bass response at all compared to the other units. The 425s are very non-dimensional. They are also larger than the others in the ear cartilage pocket. This is a shame because I have been using Shure products for over 30 years. Our in ear packs are actually PSM 300 Shures. You can’t return them once you’ve used them so I’m stuck with them. I would return them or sell them for a huge loss if I could. The $20 KZs smoke them.

Shure SE-425 Earphones Customer Review

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

I don't expect to change it before it wears out (several years i hope).
Sound
I used to have some shure earphones htat i lost while traveling. I just got some cheap ones to complete my trip and ordered the SE-425 as soon as i got home. When i had to switch to the cheap one, i had just forgotten how much i was spoiled with the Shure. These new ones have a great sound, the trebles are not shadowed by the bass, the sound is very detailed. And the isolation is terrific and easy (passive, not active, no batteries required) while traveling particularly on a plane.
Features
One big minus: the plastic around the plug is huge, which makes it difficult/impossible to pug it through protective sleeves of an ipad or iphone!!! I used to have the volume attenuator with the older set, this accessory is missing and it's too bad, because even at minimum, the volume can be quite high while watching movies on airplanes. Otherwise, the regular set of sleeves, cleaning tool, big jack adapter come with the earphones.
Ease of Use
Plug and play music. Passive sound isolation. Can't be simpler. Changing sleeves is easy, cleaning too.
Quality
The quality of built is amazing. Bigger cable is used close to the earphones to prevent wear and tear.
Value
Not cheap...but worth it if you want high a high quality product with service behind.
Manufacturer Support
Although i can't speak for these ones, i had to use the 2-year warranty with my previous set of Shure, and they were replaced without any problem (actually the first replacement set was not working properly and they sent me another set no question asked).
The Wow Factor
I wouldn't pay for a new set every year, but when i lost my other set, it was a no brainer that i would replace them with other Shures.
