"Fantastic sounds and playability"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Sound
Drums sound fantastic. Cymbals and hi-hat excellent. Great variety and possibilities for recording, especialy with onboard mixer and eight seperate outputs from the brain . Anyone slagging this kit has obviously not played one...or they are in the business of selling acoustic kits and are trying to damage the future of this kit.
Features
Being able to practice almost silently wearing headphones means I can practice in my apartment any time of the night or day. For many drummers this is like dying and going to heaven! Acoustic level band rehearsals in the living room are possible with a monitor at a low level, very convenient. On-board practice patterns are usefull.Rim shots on all the drums is great! Dynamic response on drums is great too.
Quality
Sensational sounds. The kit will not replace my acoustic kit for live performances but is fantastic for practice, rehearsal and recording. Could set up kit part TD20, part acoustic (cymbals)for some gigs.
Value
Very expensive. Could have bought a high-end acoustic kit with this much money but nothing else matches this kit in it's niche.

"Literally impossible to go wrong with this product..."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Superbad! Buy one...
Sound
Impeccable! Second to none for an electric kit, and darn near close to rivaling an acoustic/"live" kit...
Features
It all comes down to the "Brain" of the V-Pro...the level of customization is extraordinary...I dig the argument about not including snare stand, etc., for hefty price tag - but I still think the TD-20S is loaded!
Ease of Use
as self-explanatory as they come...assemble and beat on it...
Quality
there's a reason this thing costs what it does...the research, development and production costs to create this masterpiece must be immense...but it certainly shows in the quality of the product...as someone said in another review, "you get what you pay for", which is a lot!
Value
I only put a "9" instead of "10" as a nod to my starving musician bretheren...I think the value is unsurpassed, and I am an investment banker by trade and weekend warrior drummer, so cost isn't an issue...but I still understand the argument about $5 G's + being pricey...I believe it's worth the money, though, certainly...
Manufacturer Support
have always found Roland to be very receptive and helpful, though I've never had issues with the products (this is my 3rd V Pro)...I usually contact Roland with technical questions and they are mighty helpful...
The Wow Factor
The black version is straight bad ass...

"Roland TD-20.....The Ferrari of the the drum world!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
Sound Quality....Through decent amps/Speakers....it is excellent. The kit is easier to play than an acoustic kit. The cymbals require a slightly different approach apposed to using brass. You dont have to hit hard to obtain a good crash for eg:The same goes for the Hi Hat-Once mastered it is a dream to play. The module contains everything you need....& More! Played live & the sounds are exactly what you would get from a miked acoustic kit.The module has enough amplification to practice using headphones. The sound is brilliant, of course depending on the quality of your headphones. One pitfall is that Roland have used the old principle of base drum spurs. I wasn't happy with this setup so I have used 2 x clamps (Similar to the arm which houses the brain) clamped on the front rail and used as buffers to prevent the base drum from creeping. Roland need to look at this I have eleminated all drum movement.!In the past I have used Ddrum triggers on my ludwig & trigger pads on my roto toms in conjunction with an Elesis D4 sound module & Yamaha trigger unit. The Roland TD 20 has given me all this....And More!..It has cost
Features
Accessories!...considering the price, I would have expected Roland to help out with a bass pedal Hi Hat & Snare stand. I know Roland don't Do hardware but they should make an exception with this pricey kit. They provide Cymbal stands so where is the problem.I have ordered 4 x Pintech Tubular pads for extra triggers (Cowbell, Tambourine etc)These are 6" tubes & very usefull as apposed to using up a cymbal .Take notice Roland, we all like to add these little extras.
Quality
An advancement from the Td-10 is the fact that the TD-20 cables are fed through the rack..makes the kit look tidier.Very nice except that if this kit is used for gigging sooner or later you are going to snag one of the hundreds of jack plugs dangling from the thing.Looks like another fibre case to add to my collection.Apart from this, the rack is top quality!!
Value
I have made comparisons and feel that Roland have given me value for money.
The Wow Factor
I have put off buying an electric kit for years, mainly because they didn't look good & didn't sound authentic. I saw Roland TD-10 on a website, liked the look of the kit & was knocked out with the sound. I visited my local music store and watched a demo by a session drummer. The kit looked even better in real life and sounded amazing. So I bought it..I wanted to play this kit.I wasn't impressed with the single Hi hat and other minor irritants so I returned it and purchased the TD-20.It looks good and sound amazing.Sex appeal...it i the Ferrari of the drumming world.!

"Professional drummer relegates himself to e-drums and headphones..."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
The only changes I would make would be in using real Zildjians if I played out. This drum set is the schizzle, but only because I have chops out the wazoo.
Sound
I'm an ex-professional drummer who replaced a set of Yamaha e-drums with the TD-20k a few weeks ago. Other than the Yamaha set having a greater variety of drums sounds and the rubber pads being faster, the Roland set bridges the gap between e-drums and acoustic drums. The mesh heads replicate conventional drum heads, and have a great feel. The bass head is especially great, and I'm playing faster, more relaxed patterns than when people threw money at me to do this. The somewhat limited drum settings are very real, but only 20 or so are worth a crap. The cymbal sounds are a bit light and low on treble content. I will crank the sensitivity up and see if that helps. The hi-hat cymbal triggers are not good, though, not allowing you to "splash" the cymbals with your feet. It impedes my Tony Williams stuff a lot. There is too much audible mechanical clicking in the hi-hat, too. I have had to readjust the hat cymbals often to keep them within operating range. The rack is rock solid, and nothing moves, and with no amp, the set is nearly silent.
Features
I wish there were more drum voicings, and I especially wish there were more musical patterns to play along with. There are few good ones, and they all sound as if they were created on keyboard, with some pretty horrible synth voicings. The Yamaha DTXpress system was more enjoyable to play along with as far as songs. The Yamaha set had some nasty Phil Collins-sounding tom settings that I really miss, and some amazing snare settings, including some amazing rim shot sounds. All accessories were included other than snare stand, hi-hat, and pedal(s). The DW snare stand did not work with the 12" diameter snare, and I exchanged it for a Gibraltar, which works flawlessly. I am using a Yamaha monitor system (and/or phones)from my old drums, and it works exceptionally well, although it would be a stretch for performing live.
Ease of Use
The user interface is intuitive, but the manual gets confusing at times. It took me forever to get the 2nd crash to stop triggering the most awful "marimba" pattern. Roland answered my e-mail on a Sunday to help me, though. The unit should have been shipped with no triggers enabled. Instead, I had to go into the menu and figure out how to eliminate about a half dozen of them. The manual needs to be more in-depth, and then there needs to be a quick set up guide.
Quality
Quality is beyond reproach. I am concerned about the heads, but as when I played for a living, I'll order spares in advance. The finshes are excellent. The internal cable routing is cleaner than my last set. The TD-20 sound module is easy to make adjustments on while playing, unlike the Yamaha, which required stopping and getting out a magnifying glass. Almost. The overall quality level is as good as my 1966 Ludwig Downbeat set, which was superb. (In 1970, I was sponsored by Ludwig, and the quality had plummeted. I wore out a big set in a year.) Packaging was perfect, with ample protection, and no floating parts.
Value
This product is a 10 for value. The fact that some may consider it expensive has nothing to do with value. A Corvette Z06 is expensive at $70,000, but it is the best sports car value on Earth, if you get my point.
Manufacturer Support
As mentioned above, I put in an e-mail request on a Sunday, and got an answer the same day. Problem solved.

The only minor adjustment that needs to be made is the hi-hat and the Snare. Sometimes they sound a little "fake"

"The twenty first centry of drumming has arrived, a drum set that you can finally control the volume and easy to transport from p"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
there would be no need to replace this system, If I wear this product out I would replace with the same parts.
Sound
This is the greatest thing that every happen to the drumming world. The sound of the different drum types makes it exciting to play , instead of having two or three different drum sets to play different types of music, I could just have one V PRO series to play gospel, heavey rock, light rock, and jazz. The library of different sound types is fantastic, when I sat behind the V PRO series set I played for over an hour and half. Within that hour and half I was thrilled, happy, excited, and shocked on how great the V PRO series sounded. The best part of all, is I can finally ajust the volume of the drum set. Meaning I can work a hard beat into a song but I can have the same volume of acustic guitars without over playing them. One of the greatest feature is fd-6 high hat controler there are no words to describe how great it is. To be able to get every possible sound out of the fd-6 high hat, it was just like using a real high hat. The main reason for me wanting to get this V PRO series drum set. I could play them any time of the day with out distrubing my family or my neighbors, and because the mesh head are silent I could practice for hours. I tried other electronic drums sets before but they didn't have the right feel, the rubber pads had to much bounce and the triggers and the sound was fair to poor. The only other equipment I would like to see is a splash cymbal and sound added to this series.
Features
the TD-8 sound module is great, I found nothing I didn't like about this drum system
Quality
it felt great strong and strudy I couldn't feel or see anything wrong. The set looks great
Value
this is about 4 times the price of a average drum set
Manufacturer Support
no I had no prior experience
The Wow Factor
the appeal is alright, with this setup I can make great music that I just couldn't due with my present set

"FROM 1 TO 10 I GIVE IT A 12"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
If I had the chance to get my hands on one of these, I would use it and own it for as long as it lasts. I would have to say that in my experience, this set would be in my arsenal for quite some time, probably about 7 - 10 years.
Sound
I love these drums. This set has the most dynamic and true sound of a real drumset. The only thig I have to say, is that you still can't beat a real drumset. The dynamics of a real set, as far as a crescendo on the cymbals, as well as the different dynamics of a tomm tomm, have yet to be truly abtained by an electronic set. I must admit though, Roland comes as close as I have seen, or rather heard. I have to give this set 2 thumbs up.
Features
I beleive I like the features of this set as well as ony other rack set up. This set is convenient and accessible. I love the sound module of this set. Roland makes playing an electric set fun again. I love the different ways you can " Tinker in the engine room."
Quality
This is one of the finest sets Roland has come up with, and in my opinion, no one else even comes close to the quality and craftsmanship as Roland.
Value
I would have to say that this set is worth every penny, although I wish it wasn't quite so high.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't had any real problems with the set I played. The only problem I had was my own doing. I tinkered too much, and played with the settings too much and I had to call Roland to find out how to regain the sound I had to begin with. Roland was great, They didn't even call me STUPID.
The Wow Factor
I really want one of these. If I had the money I would have my own set already. Even though I prefer to use an acoustic set, I still have an important use for this set. I need a set that I can play with any level of enthusiasm. As you know drums are the loudest instrument there is, except for maybe a horn. I love to play at all hours of the day, and night. If I had one of these, there would be nothing stopping me.

TD20S IS THE BEST OUT THERE PERIOD.
Sound
I own the TD20S,these drums are the best electic drums I have ever played. The sound of these drums are the best out there compared to any other electric set out there on the market.I recommend TD20S to any drummer that would like the feel, sound, and quality of acoustic drums.
Value
All I have to say about the price is,you pay for what you get. These drums are really worth the money spent. I have read many comments of other drummers saying that the price is to high, but they also say that these are the best electric drums out there.Whats up with that?
The Wow Factor
The look and the feel is the best.Just like the Bently of cars,TD20S is the Bently of electric drums.

"This is the better and less expensive option ... from a certain point of view."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
Sound
Awesome! Lot's of options and flexibility that fits in really well with the stuff I like to do. I can see people using this thing exclusively for recording sessions / gigs / etc ... no problem.
Features
Well ... I know some people have complained about not having a HH & SN stands and pedals but, I don't think that's what Roland had in mind. As a drummer of 20+ years I can say that I have faves re: particular hardware and wouldn't want to deal with unloading more hardware that I didn't need in the first place - even, as some have said, for the price of this kit.
Ease of Use
Ummm .... awesome.
Quality
Much better than many other E kits that I've had to deal with.
Value
Here's the thing - if you're just starting to kit yourself out with more pro style gear: A good acoustic set (5-7 piece) could be priced for $2500 - $4500 just for shells and hardware. Then you spend a lot on good cymbals (true - it takes time to find the gems but you can shell out a lot of money for 1 set of decent cymbals) then you buy cases, good kick pedal and some other stuff. That could put you in the $6000 range (or much more depending) anyway. So - it's the the TD-20S V Drum kit is basically (over time) the same OR EVEN CHEAPER! Cuz if you're a multi genre player maybe you want 2 drum outfits or 3 maybe..... 3-5 snare drums. Ok - I exaggerate a little m aybe ... but I think getting the variety with this one set of pads and cymbals in an all in one for less than 6G is pretty good and worth spending the extra $500 - $1000 on some missing components.
Manufacturer Support
No idea ... I'm sure it's what an owner would need.
The Wow Factor
I lust for this gear .... period.

Don't know about this one. My buddy who owns it, loves it and can't imagine using anything else.
Sound
I am really impressed with the sound. The quality of the sound system makes a difference. I used it on stage through an awesome sound system. It rocked!!
Features
Happy with everything. I can't really complain, because the set wasn't mine.
Quality
I have played on other electronic sets, they seemed flimsy and cheap. i was impressed with the durability.
Value
I am amazed with the complaints on the cost of the set. This is an investement. If you are getting the sound you want, the features, etc. the price is worth it. A good product doesn't come cheap. If you wanted cheap, you wouldn't get the sound quality, etc. C'mon, you can't compare the cost and features of a Ford with the cost and features of a Mercedes.

"Great product - and you'll have to pay for it."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
awesome product overall, best vdrum out there - and you'll pay for the quality.
Sound
Sounds exactly like a real set except for detailed hihat and snare work. if you play like carter beauford, you might have some complaints... if you play like dave grohl, it will sound nearly identical to a real set on your recordings. only complaint i'd have is the tendency for a "double-hit" sometimes when you don't want it. you have to adjust playing style slightly for that. otherwise, play it just like a normal kit.
Features
powerful features to control effects, ambient sounds, modeling the size of the cymbals/drums, rivets, drum material, muffling, snare buzz from other drums... great stuff
Quality
frame is solid, and you can smack the hell out of the drums and they'll take it.
Value
the product is amazing, but its always hard to justify such a steep price tag. if you live in an apt, this may be your only way or recording drums. heck, even if you don't, it is infinitely easier to record this than miking a drum set.
Manufacturer Support
