"The Variax - Great Road Guitar."

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

I suspect Line 6 will improve the Variax. I would buy another one.
Sound
Does a great job of matching guitar sounds. The banjo-type sounds are a little clunky.
Features
Instant drop tuning, instant guitar model selection with toggle switch for five most-used.
Ease of Use
Have had trouble with saving to the toggle. But other than that, it's fine. Would be great if I replace the neck with a Strat neck, and replace the tuning keys with locking types.
Quality
Pretty good, with the exception of the neck.
Manufacturer Support
Dealth with American Musical - who instantly replaced the first V600 I ordered, which had a bad pickup on one string. So don't buy direct.

"Variax, very average"

As soon as I have the money I'm getting at least a new neck for it, then maybe a new body so I can put the volume knob out of the way of my hand. It's like they tried to copy the worst things about a strat...ugh!
Sound
Most models sound pretty good on my Tech 21 Power Engine, but I think the sound of this guitar really shines for recording. The Les Paul and Strat sound the best without tweaking. The other models usually need some tweaking to get a good sound.
Features
This guitar needs separate volume/tone controls for the "pickups" on the different sampled guitars. Also should have a separate tuning knob so you don't have to save a patch just to get a tuning you want to use. The volume knob is totally in the way of my pick when strumming. All those knobs need to be moved toward the tail more.
Ease of Use
The guitar is very easy to use, but the workbench software is not very intuitive. The manual is good.
Quality
I love the electronics but the guitar is total s%#t! The guy who said it was a $200 guitar was being generous. For this price we should get something playable at least. The frets feel like speed bumps, the tuners were replaced the first week I had it. The tremolo keeps the guitar perpetually out of tune, so the store I bought it from blocked the tremolo so now it stays in tune but I can't use it. Nice finish, looks pretty but painful to play, especially after having a Les Paul. You fender guys will probably not notice much difference.
Value
Not really worth the price but the only game in town
Manufacturer Support
I mainly dealt with the dealer, who was so-so about support. Kinda went the cheap way out on the issues I mentioned above.
The Wow Factor
With a new neck and body this guitar would be indispensible to the gigging musician especially if it's paired with a POD XtLive.

"They need to fire their quality control team!"

They need to fire their quality control team!
Sound
It sounds like a modeling guitar. Pretty good estimations of the original.
Features
Not many guitars with more features! The Workbench software is cool but is pretty flakey on the Mac.
Quality
The frets stuck out so far on the sides that I had to file them all down to make it safe to play. Setup was horrible out of the box for such an expensive unit. Pure crap!

The Wow Factor

"Save your money."

If it were lost or stolen would I replace it? Heck no. I just reread my post and I think I sound a lot like a guitar snob. I don't mean to. I'm just trying to tell it like it is and maybe save someone else some grief. Sometimes you can pick up a really expensive guitar and it just doesn't feel or sound all that great. Other times you can pick up a middle of the road guitar and it sounds and plays beautifully. This Variax just aint got it.
Sound
I've played it through a variety of tube amps, one solid state amp,and direct to my PA board. Surprisingly, I'd say that about half of the models sound pretty good. The other half are either OK or they pretty much suck.
Features
Features? What do you say about a guitar that mimicks 25 differnt guitars? It's got a ton of features.
Ease of Use
You really have to work at it to get some decent tone out of it. Then when you switch gears to another model you gotta do it all over again. I guess that's to be expected.
Quality
It's cheap. No other way to say it. I own a '74 Les Paul, a Baker, a Tom Anderson Classic, etc.... This thing is just cheap. You can feel it.
Value
I think I'd give the thing a higher mark if the value was measured from a technological viewpoint. But my feeling is the technology is old news. The bottom line is that it's a $200 guitar with some nifty electronics.
Manufacturer Support
Haven't dealt with them. Don't know.
The Wow Factor
Different strokes for different folks. Some folks may love this thing. For me personally, it doesn't do a thing for me. I bought it on a whim to give it a thorough test drive. I drove it, now I'm selling it. Game over.

"It's all good - EXCEPT THE NUT!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Quality
There is a piece of old ice cream container plastic where the nut should be. Get an expert to replace the nut because it is glued in with a gallon of non standard guitar making glue that makes it almost impossible to dislodge.
