Joe Meek ThreeQ Pre Customer Review

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Even if it is not "the best" , it gives a nice sound to your mixes. I strongly recomend for beginners. The price is acceptable for it's sound and quality. Even if you buy a better preamp in the future, you'd still want to keep this.
Sound
the sound is warm enough, there's s small amount of coloration at low mid area. It's not a high end product but results are very stable. If it had much open sound i'd appreciate more, but also the money paid for is totally worth it.
Features
it has phantom power, compressor and 3 band eq. I find the comp a bit strong, it's best to use it at small amounts. It has a fixed ratio. The eq is pretty nice, even though it does not have q selection but never needed. Quite enough for determining the general sound. With a nice mic, no hesitation.
Ease of Use
Very easy to use, no need to diving into manual.
Quality
this unit is metal covered, quality knobs and leds. Small sized and light weighted, so easy to carry.
Value
according to money paid, this unit totally worths. Especially if you also have a transparent preamp, this may be a nice alternative coloring preamp.
Manufacturer Support
never needed a support

"Good Channel Strip"

I was really impressed bby the preamp- its very loud and bassy, the eq is very usable as well. Solid construction. As you will read in other reviews the compressor IS limited; it works great for minimal compression and really great for extreme pumping effects (like a havy bass synth sound) but really bad on vocals guitar or any "natural" sounding instrument with mid range comping. Overall, I can't seem to want to upgrade- The combination of this pre for bass and synth and a tube pre for vocals and guitar makes for a fantastic mix. Just don't plan to use this pre for everything.

"Bought "blemished" works and looks Brand New!!"

Got it used or "bleminshed" on zZounds, but its basically brand new, no scratches or anything works perfect- Really solid construction as well- Works great on rap vocals, heavy synth and especially bass. The compressor options ARE a bit too limited, but the pre is very full sounding and the "meequalizer" is very usable. Its not a "3D" sound that a tube-preamp would get (definately sounds 'solid state mono', but the compressor is very capable of that "WOOSH" when shaping fat bassy synth sounds.
