I have been using a fender aerodyne jazz bass for a while and recently got involved in a ska project that, while it works for some of the more upbeat stuff, the j bass just didn't have the ability to tweak it's sound enough to suit all of my needs. This thing has a beautiful round, warm tone that fits seamlessly into the more trad/reggae heavy stuff. This thing is also light as a feather. The only issues i could see are 1) floating bridge. Out of the box it did take some setup to get the action right and I had to lower the pickups to keep the strings from making contact with the pickups. 2) the tailpiece has those metal attachments that run loose through a crossbar, so there is a buzzing you get, but it doesn't affect the sound when you have it plugged in. And 3) a minor cosmetic detail. I got it in cherry and the pickguard isn't black like it's shown in the picture, it's a white tortoise shell. Not a major issue, but definitely not what I was expecting.

Very nice instrument. Plays well, sounds good, and looks great. Good finish work. All I did was to change the strings to some nice flat-wounds and tweaked the truss-rod a bit and this bass plays and sound great. Nice for the fat warm thumping retro sound.

Professional

Musical Style:

"Definitely NOT worth the hefty price tag!"

Been playing since 1970 and have been a tech for over 30 years. I bought this as a deal from a distributor as I was looking for a semi-hollow bass. I only gave it a quick look as I know the representative and would have no problem returning it. Upon closer inspection these basses are hastily thrown together with no attention to detail whatsoever. The very first thing you notice is that the small pieces of fret on the bridge are badly spaced. You can even see it on the close up on this website. Then I tried tuning it up to pitch and two of the tuners started slipping. The tuners are as cheaply made as can be. The reason mine were slipping is that the tuner bushing holes were drilled on an angle, so that as you increased the tension on the string it pulled the post forward which pulled the gear away from the worm and the teeth just slip when turning the knob. That's how cheap the tuners are that the plate they're on bends that easily. The tailpiece is slightly off center so that the strings don't sit in the center of the fingerboard. I slid the bridge over to compensate but it works its way back while playing. There are more things but you get the idea. All of these issues can be dealt with if you want to replace tuners, fill and redrill holes, etc., but should you have to on a bass with this hefty a price tag? There are much better options for the money. If you have to have one find a place that carries it locally and check it out thoroughly. The reps usually bring around instruments that have been tweaked to play better, so if this was a "good" example I'd hate to see the run of the mill ones.

I'm a big Hofner fan, have a bunch of their basses. Finally got my hands on one of their Semi Hollow Basses and love it. Plays great.
