These are the books that I used to first learn how to play bass. I had the whole collection with CDs. The good thing about these books is that they force you to read standard notation. This will be important latter on when you progress in your musicianship. They help you not to get caught up in getting stuck with just using tablature. This is the first book on the series. I highly recommend all of them.

Ease of Use
Well it seems some of the positioning (left hand fingerings) are not well thought out for the adult player. The use of the forth finger on some of the studies defy normal fret to finger relationship. The finger choices are handy for smaller hands but not for adult hands. The forth finger subbing for the third finger in many examples might make a string bass player happy but for sure we are talking about a bass guitar. A few of the examples do not have open position notes (EADG) that allow for easier fret and finger transitions with no real musical explanations on chromatic notes or the logical finger choices available.
