"Good quality starter kit at a nice price"

I purchased this kit from Zzounds as a Christmas present for my 8 year old son. Being a new kit on the market I bought it blind but figured I'd take the chance based on brand reputation. I was not disapointed with the purchase. It comes with snare, 2 toms, 1 floor tom, a crash, high hats, throne and of course all hardware.
Sound
Sound quality of the drums is very good! My sons instructor has a custom $5000 plus kit and while it obviously sounds better, I was suprised that the Gretsch starter kit sounds as good as it does by compairison. I will note though that the cymbols sound horrible. But it gave me time to purchase new cymbols for the kit rather than dropping another $200 plus right away. Most kits don't even include cymbols anyway.
Features
The hardware is sturdy and easily adjustable. I have it set up for my 4' son and can quickly adjust to play myself (5'8"). Another nice feature is that the heads that come with the kit are Remo brand.
Ease of Use
The kit was fairly easy to tune and the foot pedals function well. My son works his way around the kit well and it really keeps his interest. I have to say though, for it being a starter kit, I'm highly suprised it didn't come with instructions to put the kit together. Gretsch should really supply a manual. They don't even have one on their web site.
Quality
I am highly impressed with the quality of the drums themselves but again, the cymbols are almost worthless. Within 2 months the high hats are no longer useable. I wouldn't let that hold you back from getting the kit though since most kits don't come with cymbals.
Value
I'm very pleased with what I got for the money I spent. It's a great kit overall and I'm actually pleased that I had cymbals type things to hit for a couple of months before needing to spend more money. Most other brands I would have had to drop that cash right away.
Manufacturer Support
I've not dealt with Gretsch customer service so I can't comment much here. It would have been nice to have instructions or an owners manual though. Good thing there's youtube!
The Wow Factor
The kit is very appealing. The red finish looks great and the kit is holding up with no issues other than the cymbals. I'd recommend it to any beginning drummer!

So my dream drums are Gretsch USA Customs, which these are not. I'm just getting back into drums after nearly 10 years of 'retirement'.Right out of the box the drums are easy to tune. For some reason mine did not come with the Remo heads, but the heads it did come with were fine. The top rim of the snare drum ways a bit warped like it was dropped before being boxed. No big deal. Its not warped in a part that effects the seating of the head on the drum, or the tuning, but it is an eye-sore.Don't listen to the AI generated review you get from Google. These drums are LOUD and sound great. Slap some better heads on them - know a thing or two about tuning, and these drums will hold their own in almost any setting. The cymbals that come with them are awful but the hi-hats are the worst. If you hit them anywhere near 'hard' they make a sound like they're in pain. But the drums themselves really knock it out of the park.Hardware is great - the throne / stool holds my 250+ pound fat butt (for now). I'm surprised with the quality of the bass drum pedal - its almost a longboard pedal. I wear size 12 shoes and my foot fits on the whole pedal (not the foot plate). Stands are great, hi-hat clutch is kinda' annoying but those are in-expensive and it does work.Get these drums for your youngster to learn on or get it to bash on yourself. They sound great. Swap the cymbals, get good heads, you're set. I've owned many "affordable" drum sets over the years. These are the best by far. Love Gretsch :)

"Nice Surprise"

Purchased this set for my 9 year old this Christmas and first impression is outstanding. Quality of the hardware is beyond expectation and sound is good, especially for the price point. Assembly and set up was very easy with skins already on all shells except the tom and bass. Seems like a kit that he could have for a very long time and grow into. At some point he will likely want to upgrade the cymbals, but they are fine for now. I would not hesitate to recommend this kit.
