"SG Standard with P90's"

The instrument came in a case reminiscent of those used in other gibson products although it was black with white interior as opposed to the brown case with purple interior used in my LP standard. Very good construction. The SG weighs less than the Les Paul and the finish was immaculate. The sound has a bite and clarity that you have to fight to get with regular humbuckers. The P90's seem to have the "balls" of the humbucker with with the clarity and chime of single coils. They also have the hum associated with single coils but if you have a noise gate you can circumvent that issue. The only issue I have had with this guitar has been with the Kluson tuners. You cannot tighten them and the tuner on the G-string is constantly detuning. I understand that this is supposed to resemble a vintage instrument but the tuners could have been better. Either way, if you spend a thousand bucks on a guitar the. tuners should hold tune. Either way I think I am going to either have Gibson send a replacement set or I will replace them with some locking tuners that are retrofitted for an SG.

"Gibson P90 Standard"

I chose this guitar over the regular Gibson P90 special because of the hardshell case and block inlays and I am very pleased with the fit and finish of it. There is a common misconception that the SG is a one trick horse in that it's only forte is hard rock music. This misconception probably has a lot to do with Les Pauls disagreement on the design of the guitar back in the early 60's and the fact that the SG was popular with bands like Black Sabbath. Do not be confused by this because the SG is a very versatile guitar and very resonant too. That being said this guitar is very sweet with single coils like P90s. Electric guitars are not affected as much by the tonewood (does affect sustain and overall feel) but overall tone is affected by the materials of the nut, fret, fretting hand, pick and bridge. These materials are superb except the bridge which is made of cast metal (zinc based). The bridge material can dampen the attack but most people won't notice or they won't care. I will be swapping in a stainless steel bridge with brass saddles real soon though. Overall if you are considering a single coil equipped SG you will not be disappointed. This axe and an EL84 amp are a great match. The standard will have a slightly thicker neck than the special or classic but that's more comfortable to me.

"Great price for a great guitar"

Almost everyone who has been playing guitar for any le. ngth of time has a story about a guitar they regret selling. I have several, but the one I regret selling the most has to be my Gibson SG Classic. It was so sweet with the fast neck, resonant body, and P-90 pickups. So I thought about ordering another one and happened across this SG Standard with P-90 pickups. It sells for the same price as the Classic model but adds a hardshell case, trapezoid inlays, and the pineapple inlay on the headstock. I couldn't figure out why it sold for that much less than the version with the two humbuckers until I noticed that it had a 'baked maple' fretboard. This was something new to me. I'm a fan of rosewood fretboards and was a bit hesitant to give this one a chance but I finally pulled the plug and ordered it. It arrived early today, so this is a first impression review. When I opened the box and took the guitar out of the case I was pleasantly surprised at how flawless this guitar is. The nitrocelluose finish is as smooth as glass, the frets are dressed nicely, and the binding is perfect. The setup out of the box was acceptable but I tweaked the intonation and adjusted the pickup height on the bridge pickup so that the high E string could be heard better when I do hybrid picking. It has the plastic button keys which to me are fine. I put new Dean Markley Elixir strings on and stretched them, tuned, and repeated a couple of times. At first it went out of tune when I played but after a couple of times it stayed right on the money unless I went crazy with bends, but I think that is just the strings settling in. The action was perfect, not too high and zero buzzing anywhere. The truss rod had the perfect amount of relief right out of the box. The tones are out of this world. Personally, I think that the P-90 is the best sounding pickup Gibson has ever made and it works so well in the light resonant SG. The bridge pickup has bark and bite while the neck pickup gets that sweet nasally singing tone that makes solos sound so fluid. Combining the two pickups in the middle position is a much more useful tone than it is on a two humbucker SG. In all three positions the low E string is strong with tight bottom end and the high E string cuts through with no harshness. There are no muddy tones to be had with this guitar, it's very musical no matter where you put the knobs and switch. Heck, it sounds alive even when not plugged in. If you are concerned about the baked maple fretboard, don't be. It looks as good as any rosewood fretboard and feels great. It feels harder than rosewood and just as slick. I cannot discern any tonal differences whatsoever. I will never hesitate to buy another Gibson with that fretboard. The only negative thing is the case. It has a plush white interior that will show every speck of lint and whatnot. But that's the only negative I can find, and that's pretty petty in my opinion. I might buy another one in cherry finish, because I can see this one being a future classic.

First I would like to say the staff at zZounds went above and beyond to help me, The first SG they sent me the Fed Ex guy left it sitting in the hallway of my apt and since its the holiday season someone saw a package and helped themselves to it. Cannot beleive fed ex left a package sitting outside but they did. Called zZounds and explained the situation and in 2 days I had a replacement in hand, This time UPS and signature required. Took the day off work and got my new guitar. Sounds menial but I go in for surgery soon and this is what is going to get me through the 8 weeks of healing afterwords. The people at zZounds understood this and went above and beyond to make sure I had my guitar before surgery. Thank you to all of the staff at zZounds!!!!! Next its a SG it ripps and with the p90s the sound is great, got a friend doing set up for me and I will be all set for rehab. The finish is beautiful and the weight is light. Perfect Medal guitar. Would recommend this to anyone, next one is the les paul custom but gotta pay this one off first, but will def. get it at zZounds!!!!

I also made a mistake earlier in life, by selling my SG......was in a bad financial way and needed the money......I love this axe.....IMO it is the most versatile guitar on the market......you get the ballsy sound of the LP...and the brighter sounds of the Strat all in one instrument.....it doesn't kill your back like the LP does....it is comfortable to play....and has the fastest neck in any top tier guitar that I have played....everytime I come on here though...it is sold out....hmmmmmm wonder why.....this is the most underrated guitar in the universe...also when you have one, you are usually loyal to it.... I bought an EPI G-400 not long ago, because it was the only one I could afford at the time....it's a nice guitar...but not quite the same....I will keep it for a practice axe when I buy this one.

"Gibson SG standard P90"

I bought this guitar a month ago, giving myself a few weeks to get to know her i can say she's a keeper. not without a couple points to be noted: the fret board has all sorts of weird marks that look like stain and scratches. i work in a high end wood shop and the maple, as nice as it sounds, has weird stains and scratches between the first fret and the nut (closer to the nut...) also, the truss rod cover DOESNT say standard, its blank. all this aside, and the fact that the pickups are wired into some sort of pcb board, its a great guitar, it sounds great, and plays great. however spending a little over $1,000 on a guitar, i would expect it to come without these flaws, so a little disappointing but not enough to send it back. i got the black one, it looks very very sleek and shiny, almost sinister, but oh so sweet when you play it. cosmetic gripes aside, its a real gibson and it plays like one.
