Epiphone G-400 Electric Guitar

The Epiphone G-400 is a great first SG-style guitar. With a pair of AlNiCo humbuckers and Mahogany body, the G-400 offers excellent sound for the price.

"Amazing Guitar."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I will never want another guitar until this one like, dies somehow. This guitar is just so great that I don't really see how I could possibly improve upon it. I only wish that I had bought it sooner.
Sound
This guitar sounds incredible. Clean it has a bright, ringing, full electric tone, and distorted it has a fierce, dark, aggressive tone. I think that you can play just about anything on this guitar and it would sound great. I've played it through normal amplifiers and through the computer with GuitarRig and it sounds awesome both ways.
Features
The guitar has great tuners, it tunes easily and stays in-tune very well. The pick-ups are better than most of the lower Epiphone models and they have covers and look great. They also sound amazing, as detailed above. Also there is a handy switch that lets you choose to use the neck pick-up, bridge pick-up, or both. This guitar also has the awesome trapezoid inlays on the neck which gives it a sweet Gibson look.
Ease of Use
This guitar is so easy and fluid to play. For some reason the neck just feels great. I find it easier to play anything on this guitar than on other guitars, probably just because it is better quality.
Quality
The quality is fantastic. You couldn't ask for better quality at this price. Everything is solid and well put-together. It doesn't seem to have any "cut corners" or anything.
Value
This thing is probably the best value in all of musical gear. For typical $300 - $400 it goes for, it is really a steal. I think it is at the same quality level as a Gibson -- I really do.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't had any contact with Epiphone but I know they would replace the guitar if I had a problem because I have heard the same thing from others.
The Wow Factor
The SG body is probably one of the sexiest guitar bodies ever. Every time people see my guitar they comment on how awesome it looks. The finish is really nice and glossy and the trapezoid inlays really set it off.

"Just a few words about the G-400"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I'm staying with this one for a while. Before I set it up the way I have it now I was already looking around but now I'm in love with it...lol
Sound
I think many who think this guitar is a little 'flat' haven't taken the time to set it up correctly for what they want to do. Before setting it up I was thinking about changing the pickups. After a little research on the internet (you can spend $35 to have it done at a shop) I set it up my self and it sounds great. I can get a nice blues sound or crunch some chords if I want and then pop over for some hard riffs.
Features
Again the features are dependant on the set up. I set the rythemn pickups to be 'hotter' on the bass side and the treble pickup to really get as close to a twang as i could and it sounds great when they are both on. Some people knock the tuners on this model and keep in mind the weather and how well you string your instrument makes a difference. I was ready to get new tuners this summer but they have been keeping pitch this winter so I'll wait to see.
Quality
Made well. My friend has a Gibson Les Paul Classic and he was impressed with the Epiphone G-400. Nothing has gone wrong with it and it looks great so I'm not complainng. I still may change the tuners but right now that is it.
Value
I spent almost 6 monthes researching and compareing before I bought this guitar and I am still happy with it and the price. Sure I would love a Gibson but I don't have that cash. If you want humbucklers and a good product this is a good choice.
Manufacturer Support
Never contacted them or needed too.
The Wow Factor
Think about the serious rock stars who have played his type of guitar. Peolpe comment on it all the time. It has the look that is for sure.

""It's Exactly Like A Gibson SG!""

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I find the Epiphone G-400 an amazing rock beast. I think I will be playing this guitar for YEARS! Until I get a job and buy a gibson les paul standard. I like the SG just as much as a Les paul, but now that I have a Epiphone SG that is just like an Gibson SG, I think i'll get a Gibson Les Paul Standard, because I've never had one before.
Sound
The sound of this beast is incredible, I don't know if its for every G-400, but my G-400 came with a Seymour Duncan humbucker, and a ceramic 490t hotwired. Sounds incredible with distortion on treble AND rythym! I am really impressed with how many tones you can reach with this beast. I can reach Led Zeppelin tones, AC/DC tones, and more tones! The guitar is pretty good clean too, although i'd prefer it on distortion. A bad thing is that you would need to turn down the two volume knobs to half if you want a good clean sound, other than that, this thing sounds just like a Gibson!
Features
The guitar had great parts! I loved how it came with speed knobs and chrome hardware. The knobs were brand new, no dents no cracks, etc, and they worked great! The switch was rotated so you switch it left to right rather than up and down, but I like it like that! This epiphone came with grover tuners, and man are they good. Although I wish MY g-400 came with some humbucker covers, just to top it off!
Ease of Use
The G-400 is very easy to get used to! I can play from a variety of riffs, to solos really easy on this guitar! It is VERY easy to reach the top frets without a fuss! I am very impressed but how easy it is to play on this guitar!
Quality
The G-400 is amazing. When I got my G-400 it was brand new, there was no dents, no blemishes, and man oh man was it kept in good condition at the store. Everything was on in place, the tuners were tight on, the knobs were put on perfectly, no missing bolts! The frets are almost EXACTLY right on! I can play a variety of songs and such without the guitar going out of tune. I have had the guitar for about 3 weeks now, and man of man, I have only tuned it once, and it stays in tune forever!
Value
For a guitar that's only 450$ CAD, I am IMPRESSED by the incredible value of this beast. It is just like any Gibson, but it's just less authentic(since Gibson is the maker of the SG, etc..)! If I had a budget, I'd think of getting a Gibson Les paul, since the Epiphone G-400 sounds JUST LIKE a Gibson SG!
Manufacturer Support
Epiphone's support team is incredible. I have an Epiphone DR200 acoustic guitar, and once it fell down while I was sleeping and the headstock broke off, I called Epiphone, and they offered to give me a brand new epiphone DR 200. They were really kind and helpful, and they give great support!
The Wow Factor
When I stepped into Long & Mcquade, I looked around, saw many les pauls, and lots of strats & telecasters, I turned and looked at the corner, and there it was. I spotted the a wonderful looking SG. I really like how it has that Demonic, Satanic look into it, by the horns. It looks really nice because when held it, and wore it on and started playing it, damn did I look good with an SG!

"Seriously....you can't get any better for the price....."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I have played for over fourty years....I have played every imaginable guitar brand and style....and this guitar smashes every guitar I have ever played for the price. I own a Gibson SG and a Fender Telecaster.....I bought the Epiphone G-400 for basically a practice guitar.....turns out it is SOOOO much more than that. Don't let the fact that it is not made in the US lure you away from it, this is a really well quality built guitar....I was so impressed with the sound and action after setup that now it is in my arsenal of gig guitars. I was recently on the road at a gig, and a fellow approached me, and said, "hey that's an Epiphone, I thought it was a Gibson.....that thing blew us away".....he was a Gibson player and couldn't believe I was using an Epiphone on stage....I let him play it and now he is sold.
Sound
Excellent....period....
Features
The Grover tuners......
Ease of Use
It is very playable.....I also own a Gibson SG....and they play identical.....the only difference is the "Epiphone" on the headstock and the price.
Quality
Made very well.....
Manufacturer Support
Have not had any problems, so haven't had to deal with the company.
The Wow Factor
You will NEVER find any better quality for this price....

"Best guitar for under $400.00!"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Sound
When I went to the Guitar shop ,I had in mind to purchace a Fender in a higher price range($500.00-600) than what the Epiphone G400 was in. The sound of the Epiphone G400 was better. I was pleasantly suprised I could get an elctric guitar of this quality for $349.00. The sound to me is quite clear and I had no fret buzz. One of the first things I did was change the strings to D"addiario custom lights . My son eventually was playing it more than me. Now it sets in his room with a nicer amp with a pedal. He loves to play Jimmi Hendrix stuff and he can make it sound very good!
Features
It is a very easy guitar to play and tune. Once you get some better strings and tune it you may have to retune once or twice . Grover tuners are just exeptional in my opinion! The volume and tone knobs are quite nice too. I purchaced the ebony one. My son already had a Takemenie acoustic electric that was cherry red in color. The finish is as good as you will find for under $1000.00.
Ease of Use
It is quite easy to play . It stays in tune. We bought a pedal to get some sounds we were wanting. The Epiphone is very easy to play. I do not see you needing to move up quickly in your journey to become proficient at playing an electric guitar.
Quality
The quality is good. The finish is excellent. However the knobs are a little weak and can come loose. The tuners are great! The fretboard is excllent. I would think that the guitar would do well on the road. Not as good as the Gibson SG but you could 3 of these for the price of one SG!
Value
What can you get that is better for $349.00 ? It is a better guitar than many that cost $200.00 more. It is a great value!
Manufacturer Support
I haven't needed to have it repaired as nothing has gone wrong. We have had it for around 1 year and it is played frequently.
The Wow Factor
I realize most buy it in cherry but to me the ebony was so beautiful! The guitar is absolutely beautiful. It feels very good and quite solid.

"Love it."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I love this guitar and always will. I will probably get more guitars at some point in time, cuz i always see new stuff i want, but this will be my "go to" guitar. This guitar is way above average and the best for the price. If stolen i would buy again. What i like most is the balance and feel. There is nothing i dont like about it.
Sound
It sounds great. I dont think anything could sound better except a gibson. Its great for rock and metal but has no problem with country or classical.
Features
Solid mohagany body and neck. 22 fret. Grover tuners. Chrome HB covers. Great finish.
Ease of Use
Great action and playability. Fast and easy to play. Knobs and switch are easy to reach.
Quality
Its very well made. There are no blemishes and the finish is great. I believe this would be a good guitar for the road. Its pretty tough and its reliable enough. I think it will last a long time.
Value
Great value. It is definatly worth the price.
The Wow Factor
This guitar is sexy. I have the alpine white version and it looks awesome. It also feels great. I love the balance.

"Awesome"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This guitar is sure to be my main instrument for years to come. It's perfect for the style of music I play, and unless I become rich or lucky (Both which I am not) enough to get a Gibson, I will definetly be searching Epiphones future products when shopping for my next instrument.
Sound
The sound on this guitar is simply awesome. There's no fret buzz, and you can get a lot of sounds when played in front of distortion or anything else. I got a unique sound from picking, which I can't say about other guitars that I enjoy. As for the pickups, the bridge humbucker creates a lot of amazing lead tones, but the neck pickup leaves a little to be desired. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Gibson.
Features
All the little things come into place. The speed knobs work like a dream, and the tuners are rock solid, no complaints at all.
Ease of Use
This is an extremely playable guitar. The neck is lightning fast, and you can use the stopbar-tailpiece to vary your playing style (From bridge, above, etc.)
Quality
It seems like a very sound guitar. My strap system does not include straplocks or anything, and it's been dropped and banged time and time again, and it still plays the same and has no blemishes. However, the pickup selector sometimes dramatically lowers the volume when I switch from bridge to neck or both and then back to bridge, but it's pretty rare. Probably just the wiring. Plus, the washer around the input jack is loose, but that's easily fixed.
Value
I think this is one great guitar, but maybe not worth the price it's currently at. Maybe just $50 less, and you'll have the perfect instrument.
Manufacturer Support
No problems so far.
The Wow Factor
This piece is just drop dead gorgeous. I don't know why anyone would buy it in black; the cherry red is nothing short of fantastic. The trapezoid mother-of-pearl inlays show that no detail can go too far. One thing that I would have liked to have as an option-the different style of pickguard, since the current one only covers the right side, but I guess that's how you distinct this guitar (besides the headstock) from the Gibson Standard SG.

Sound
I have played a $2200 gibson sg 61' reissue and this G400 has the exact same tone and sound produced by the wright player. Its one awesome kick ass guitar! You can go to Sabbath to AC/DC to Jazz with the rythum and trebble effects on it. I bought it at 12 sharp the other day and put it down at 12 sharp A.M. I love this guitar! Black is the best!
Features
Great features. Love treb and rythum effect and 2 tone and 2 volume nobs for your likings.

"Angus would be proud!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This is a keeper and is a welcomed addition to my collection. I would replace it if anything ever happened to it. I'm a huge AC/DC fan and this guitar gives me the tone for playing those classic Angus Young riffs.
Sound
The Chrome covered Alnico Humbuckers are just amazing and are IMO, much better than those on my Epiphone Les Paul Studio. They have more of a brighter and snappier tone to them with a little more sustain, thus making this the perfect guitar for Heavy Metal which is just right up my alley!
Features
Let's see, you have Block Inlays, Cherry Red finish which is just drop dead gorgeous. The infamous devil horns which Les Paul himself was not a fan of. The neck itself, is a little thicker than that on my LP Studio but it only tok me a few minutes to get used to it. The features are pretty much the same as those on my LP Studio with the exception of the Block Inlays and the Chrome covered pups!
Ease of Use
Once I set this up and intonated it,I was in heaven. The action on this is nice and low, and the Grover tuners keep this monster in perfect tune. This guitar is built for speed so be careful when handling it or you might get burned. LOL!
Quality
Here's where I had a slight problem. It seems that the setup on this was sub par. I reccomend that if you are going to get one of these, that you have a setup done on it. I've been playing for over 36 years and I do my own setups so I was able to handle that by myself. On mine, the intonation was off, along with the tailpiece which had to be raised a bit. Also the bridge and the pups needed to be adjusted and the tuners needed to be tightened up. Once I took care of all that and restrung it,I was rewarded with a guitar that sounded great and stays in tune quite well!
Value
This is definately worth the $349.99 price tag, considering that the Gibson counterpart goes for at least $699.00. Not everyone can afford a Gibson and IMO, once setup properly, these Epiphones are just as good and are a great value for the price.
Manufacturer Support

Sound
This guitar is simply amazing! For the price there is nothing better. The sound is the best ive heard on any stock epiphone. Not to say these are GREAT pickups, but for stock epiphone they certainly get the job done! Very nice lead tones from bridge and with a good amp the neck sounds nice too. You have to realize that the amp makes more of a tonal difference than the pickups or guitar.
Features
It features a hotter Alnico V magnet which gives it an increased treble and mid range response. Also grover tuners which are the best out there. Set neck! and a handcrafted beautiful finish.
Ease of Use
Sounds great through my VOX 15 watt Valvetronix (tube through the preamp) but a modeling amplifier. very nice amp for the price. Sounds wonderful through my Fender Deville.
Quality
Very nice handcrafted guitar. Made in china, but seems to me that they take quality control very seriously at epiphone, because i know 4 other people that own this guitar and all say that it was made beautifully.
Value
No better guitar for the money. I would recommend changing the electronics, probably to 500k pots, and put the gibson 57' Classic Neck and a gibson 57 classic plus bridge, and you will have a guitar that will sound as good or better than a gibson SG, and the epiphone stays in tune better.

Sound
Great sound. I'm able to switch easily between crunchy rock or smooth jazz like vibes.
Quality
I have had mine 2 years and play every weekend at least in church if not another gig. It is like brand new. No problem with the electronics. My only complaint is the tuners. I have struggled with intonation. I have finally found the right match of strings and intonation.
Value
Great guitar for the money. I planned to buy the Gibson SG and actually like the feel of this better. Saved a chunk of change.

Sound
The sound of this product is rich and pure.

Ease of Use
Its easier to play this guitar with the help of the bigger fret board. This is a really good guitar for people who have to get around the frets for solos.

"The Building Block of Rock"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
It does what I need better than I really need it to, and looks good doing it. It's easy to use, it'll last me through college, and looks good. The action and intonation is so good it will actually help me learn faster, and looks damn good. If it wore out, if someone stole it, if it happened to catch fire at the end of a set, I might save up for the deluxe or a custom, or maybe a used Gibson, but that's because I anticipate this one lasting me until I can afford one of those.
Sound
It's got a nice fat tone, I would rather the pickups be a little more varied, the treble just isn't quite bright enough for me, but that comes with the lighter and softer wood. Newer players won't have a problem with it, but if you're going for a more specific style, classic rock, jazz or lead guitar for alt rock, it may not have what you need. Handles distortion well though, great for what I call light metal, Black Sabbath, Metallica, etc.
Features
It's got all the stuff you need on a dual humbucker guitar, the two tones, two volumes, a three-way switch. Grover tuners are a brilliant upgrade, there really is no going back once you tune with a Grover. I wish it had the full pickguard, but that's something I can do later.
Ease of Use
Honestly, it sounded good when I plugged it in, no setup or anything. The guitar itself is actually really easy to use also, as compared to strats and teles. It's also easier to play than a Les Paul due to the weight, though I have to mention, if you're really picky, this guitar IS neck heavy, so you can't let it go slack, always support the neck.
Quality
First, it's a two piece mahogany body, and on mine it appears as though the grains are reversed on the two sides, giving it an obvious joint line in the light, as the finish gets darker or lighter depending on the angle. Finish is lovely though, no blems, it's quite pretty, and I do prefer the newer trapazoidal inlay to the dots, it makes it easier to do slides somehow. Overall, a solid guitar, but I'm absolutely terrified of dropping it, I don't think it'll be that stable. Gigging I would bring a backup, but only as a superstition, because I haven't gone to a gig where at least two strings didn't break.
Value
Well, I did the research, got it on sale of course, and at that price it was clearly the best buy. If you're waffling, as I was, between an Agile AL 2000/2500, I would say that this guitar beats out the Agiles, but if you were to go between an Epi SG Deluxe vs an Agile AL 3000, the Agile wins hands down. If you have the extra $100 or so, get the AL3000, it's Gibson quality. This is the best SG out there for under 300 though.
The Wow Factor
It almost fell out of my gig bag while I was at school, caught it thank god. As I zipped open my bag to put it back I got no less than 4 people hollering at me "Hey Corbin, nice guitar, is that yours?" And that was a time span of maybe a minute and a half. It's a very sexy guitar. Very few people don't lust after the SG design, especially in red.

"The hottest guitar I've ever played!"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I'll probably be playing this guitar for a long time, though I might get a Gibson SG to replace it sometime. Even then, I'd turn it into a custom job, put in better pickups, splash some cool graphics on it. If anyone stole this guitar, I'd hunt them down and brutally assault them, and take it right back. If that failed, I'll definitely buy it again. A more experienced musician should go for a Gibson, but for beginners, intermediates, and amateur musicians, this is one sweet six string!
Sound
This is a really good-sounding guitar. I've only had it for a week, and I'm impressed by its versatility. I play punk, hard rock, and metal, and this SG can play all of them really well. I played it through a friend's Behringer GM110 for our first gig (my GMX110 was being fixed), and I was just blown away. It sounds a lot like the real deal when playing AC/DC or Black Sabbath. Classic rock and country sound really great on this guitar too. Too bad it's not a Gibson.
Features
The 2 volume and 2 selector knobs give it plenty of tonal versatility, and the set neck is pretty fast. The tune-o-matic bridge is nice too.
Ease of Use
The G-400 is pretty light, especially compared to a lot of Les Pauls. I own a Squier Telecaster that when compared to the G-400's weight is like a clunky boulder. Like I said, the neck is fast, and the action came set nice and low, but not so low that there was any buzzing. The selector switch's position is easy to switch on the fly. My first gig came about two days after I got it, and it was way easy to use. I don't really need a backup guitar to play gigs when I have this.
Quality
I bought it as a customer return. The pickguard had a few scratches on it and the 2 on the bridge pickup volume knob was worn off, but nothing else. The guitar was delivered untuned, but that was quickly fixed. The strings it came with were not very good, so I put some Gibson Reissues on and BAAM! The finish was nice too. The hardware was undamaged, and it played perfectly.
Value
I was considering getting a G-310 SG 'cause it was way cheaper, but I'm glad I chose to wait and get the G-400. The pickups are Alnico V humbuckers, which have more output and sustain than the G-310's open-coil humbuckers. This is very good value for its price.
The Wow Factor
This is one beautiful guitar. The mother-of-pearl trapezoid inlays are awesome-looking, along with the chrome hardware. I bought the ebony version, and all the girls at my last gig all thought I had the sweetest guitar there. I could take this thing to school and have girls falling all over me.

i think this is going to last my life, even when its all scratched and the finish is peeling, i'll still be playing it.
Sound
Very cool kinda retro distortion sound. i would put a pair of emgs in it to give it some more treble.
Features
I give this a one, but in a good way. it has almost no odd bells and whistles , and who needs them?
Quality
Hasn't broken on me yet. Very loyal.
Value
not very expensive in the first place, but buy it b-stock, its like, nearly free. mine's b-stock, and i only paid like, 200 bucks for it.
Manufacturer Support
havent needed it.

"HOT!!!!!!!!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Overall this guitar is a beauty, I recommend it. It is my favorite guitar and will keep it for life. It is excellent in terms of look and sound and would not be happier. If it got stolen. I would either replace it with the exact same guitar. Or go a step higher and buy the Gibson SG. Someday i would like to change the pickups and just play around with them to get different sounds. I recommend if you buy this guitar to get some strap locks to prevent it from falling off and hitting the ground. Ive dropped it once :(. And put a dent in one of the Grooves on the bridge.
Sound
The sound is good, can get a lot of different tones out with the 2 tone controls. I do have a problem with the low e string buzzing occasionally. Can easily be fixed by making it higher to avoid contact with the frets.
Features
Love the finish on this guitar. Got mine in Ebony - Black. Smudges quite easy however. The trapeziod inlays look mint on this guitar. And looks like the Gibson Sg. The neck i find is rather bendable. On the plus side it Stays in tune. The Tune-O-Matic bridge is a plus and can alow for easy String height adjustment.
Quality
Has a problem at the bottom of the neck having a dullness in colour. As if it hadnt had the gloss coat over top of it. Also found that one of the control knobs should have been tighter when assembeled. But in terms of reliable I would trust this guitar, have not had any problems with it apart from the ones listed above
Value
Great Value. Just as good as its big brother the Gibson Sg. At half its price. I would choose a Gibson Sg over this if I had the money. Mainly due to the fact of Gibson being well known brand and made in America. They would have better quality control.
Manufacturer Support
Never needed to contact them
The Wow Factor
The first time i saw this guitar I knew it was love at first sight :). Lol. I really like the devil horns on it and the inlays. gives the guitar that extra bit of 'Appeal" compared to the common Strat look with dots on the fingerboard. The layout of the switches are good.

"This SG really, really,Rocks! Thank You Epiphone!"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I am keeping this guitar. It has a permanent place in my arsenal.
Sound
I have no problem with the tone on this guitar. It just simply sounds amazing.I am a huge AC/DC fan,and with this,I can jam along to my CD's and get that Angus tone.I actually prefer this one to the Gibson counterpart. That's how good this sounds.
Features
Now here's where I have a slight problem. The upper frets had some serious fret buzz, but after raising the action a bit, that was resolved. Also, the neck is a little thicker than what I'm used to (Fender's),but that's not really a issue. All in all,not a bad instrument.
Ease of Use
Besides getting used to the neck,I have no problem at all with getting the sound that I want.I play a lot of classic rock and blues, and this guitar is the perfect choice for it.
Quality
Well, let me see,you got Grover tners on it,so tuning stability is a breeze. This stays in perfect tune, providing you have the bridge set even.Intonation was spot on.I didn't have to make any adjustments at all as far as that goes.Like I said earlier, the only thing that stopped me from giving this a perfect 10,was the fret buzz.
Value
Definately worth $300.00.Hell,I would've paid more for this, but thank god I didn't have to.
Manufacturer Support
Epiphone and Gibson, along with Fender, are very accessable with the public and are willing to listen to anything that you have to say to them.
The Wow Factor
The see through Cherry Red finish is gorgeous. It's very pleasing to the eye and screams class!

"Great Quality+"Easy to use" Playability= Epiphone G400"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
The sound and tone have a nice vintage/blues tone to it, even wiht any amp, it still sounds perfectly the same.
Features
Great appearance, the color of this axe is SG red with dark ripples along with it.
Ease of Use
The playability is easy, and the fretboard is not hard for fingering, neither do the mother of pearl inlays wear out. :)
Quality
Overall, it has one of the best qualities and neither are the parts loose
Value
The price was around the $300-$325 price range, unlike a Gibson
Manufacturer Support
Ben Jack's had reliable and customer friendly service, even if you're not buying anything.
The Wow Factor
I only have one other thing to say...This Epiphone is a heck of an axe!

"The best bang for your buck, brought to you by Epiphone."

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
It's very economical and won't break the bank. Aside from the stock pickups and sound issue, there is not any large, glaring problems you'll have with the guitar. If it was lost or stolen, I'd personally be angry-- but only because the modifications I made to it cost more than the original guitar itself.
Sound
As everyone most likely knows, Epiphone is notorious for skimping on pickups. The pickups that came stock with this guitar had very thin tone when used clean and with distortion. I have since replaced them with a Gibson classic '57 in the neck position and a Gibson classic '57 plus in the bridge position. In addition, the truss rod needed adjusting, as well as the intonation. Although those problems are of high priority to myself, they would not be very noticeable (if at all) to a beginner; hence the rave reviews on this site.
Features
The G-400 came stock with the usuals: 2 volume knobs, 2 tone knobs, a 3 way toggle, Grover tuning machines, chrome hardware, a tune-o-matic bridge, etc.
Ease of Use
The neck on my G-400 is very fat compared to a Gibson SG, thus decreasing in its playability very slightly. After playing for a while, the neck finish gets a little sticky when moving up and down the fretboard, but not so much that it becomes a serious problem. The Grover tuners hold the strings in tune very, very well.
Quality
The rosewood fretboard is not bound, and needed a grind and polish to tidy things up on the neck and fretboard. The neck and headstock is very heavy in comparison to a Gibson, so when you are using a shoulder strap the neck will fall down towards the ground if you don't hold it upright. After a year of use, the 3 way toggle has begun to break the circuit occasionally, resulting in my bridge-position pickup cutting out. Some pliers and a screwdriver and you can fix that, though. It was shipped to me with 3 tone knobs and 1 volume knob, though the 3rd tone knob was actually the volume for my neck-position pickup. The neck joint is very solid, and overall it's a sturdy guitar.
Value
Overall, it's a great value for the cost. And for only 300 bucks, it makes a great starting guitar.
Manufacturer Support
I never dealt with Epiphone's support. It comes with a warranty valid if you mail in a card included upon purchase, however.
The Wow Factor
Beginner and advanced guitarists alike will love the shiny hardware and fretboard inlays. It's rock-solid construction and aesthetic appeal is great, too. (It's loosely modeled after the Gibson '61 Reissue SG.)

"Best electric six string solid body guitar for the money now being made in the world. You can pay more for almost same thing --"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I will keep playing it till it wears out and then send it back to epiphone to have them refurb the neck. I may see if Brazilian black rosewood could be used in neck rather than standard rosewood. I will also buy an small body archtop guitar and had bought an 2007 Epiphone AlleyKat. layoff from work is only reason that guitar is not still mine.
Sound
I bought my 2002 Ebony Epiphone SG G-400 used in 2004 with HSC and had speed knobs added by original owner. After daily use for late nearly 5 years I stand by reason I bought an Epiphone over a Gibson SG to begin with. The looks are second to none, whenever the guitar is seen in photo by another player or in person when taken to test amplifier I get great compliments on how good it looks overall and at times hear the "let me know if you want to sell it" also. Really the looks were not the reason I bought an Epiphone over a Gibson SG Standard as I do like slightly larger fret markers on Gibson but not pick gaurd. After test playing several new models of each I found the Epiphone played faster, smoother, and smoother overall rosewood finish on neck and I have no idea why. The passive or unpowered Alnico V Gibson USA built Humbucker pup's sound great. Just as expected and test units sounded same as one I bought used. I would personally change and will someday to "Grover" tuner keys as a personal preferance. The standard "Green" tuners keys with chrome shaft and gear cover look, work fine, and hold a tune great but I personally liked the Grovers action and looks on an Alley Kat I owned for couple months. I have also installed a Gibson roller bridge and now the sustain is even better than with stock adjustable bridge. That alone seems impossible, but it does tune and hold notes better than stock bridge. I would however like to see a bit nicer (stronger) three way toggle switch. I had to replace mine when guitar was 5 years old and felt original could be a bit sturdier -- but this is nitpicking as overall this guitar is worth as much if not more that Gibson SG Standard. Fit and finish are second to no guitar and Mahogany body and set Mahogany neck with top neck flame and tilt back helps guitar sound and tune like $1,600.00 unit -- not $400 unit. I use 9-42 Gibson Bright wire or Re-Issue strings and guitar sounds as loud and clean on 20th fret as it does on open string. Fretware is minimal after daily use for several years. The cut and finish of frets is good as any guitar I have played since I started playing in 1966. I may in time also change from plastic to bone top nut to see if nut material will make a differance in tone or sustain, but do not expect much.I now play through a 2002 Marshall TSL-60 head and Mode Four 280 A oversized heavy duty 4X12 cab. I was going to buy a 1960 B cab and change out speakers for 2 Eminence Swamp Thangs and 2 Vintage 30 Celestions as funds allowed but when new 2003 Mode four cabs were being sold out new for great prices, I learned that the Mode Four 280A cab came factory loaded with 16 Ohm Marshall/Celestion Vintage 30's Standard from Marshall and Magnet cover's on speaker states Marshall MF Vintage 30. Cab is a bit taller than 1960 and wiring is double thickness of other Marshall cabs I have owned TSL c212, 1936, and JCMc212 and mode four is noticably heavier than 1960. I also use a Avatar 2X12 closed back cab I loaded with one Swamp Thang and one Tonker 8 ohm & wired in series for 16 ohm cab so can use with MF-280A if wanted. The only other small change I may make to the Epiphone G-400 is a bit stronger lead or bridge pup. It can sound thin at lower volume settings but sounds full and clean when amp is powered up to live gig levels and blends with neck pup perfectly. I use the special "insider arts" finish restorer and polish made for Epiphone guitars only. It will help in keeping down fine pick and scuff marks that are part of using same guitar daily for near 5 years. I would not trade even for Gibson SG Standard. The speed knobs are not something I would install. The factory units look just as good to me. Overall the Epiphone plays better, sounds, and looks as good or better than a Gibson SG Standard to me. If Toggle was a bit stronger would be 10 and actually for a $300.00 guitar when new at the time I bought mine it is a 10+.
Features
Again for the money this unit as is sold new -- is best value dollor for dollar on the market today. I would not change anything.
Ease of Use
Never a disapointment with playing ease, tunabilty and overall clean, blues, rock, or any music I have tried. fret wear is almost non existant and ease of fret reach is again best I have used. The pick to string touch and tone control with pick and finder bends and vibrato are as easy to control as can be expected at any price. Let alone for under $500.00 with HSC. Epiphone with Alnico humbucker's and tube Marshall halfstack -- hard to beat, maybe impossible.
Quality
From 2004 to near 2009 I have replaced one toggle switch. The neck truss rod has never even been touched. Other than a couple personal choises the guitar is best value I have found being made day in and day out.
Value
It is worth more than it list price and much more than its sale price at any store.
Manufacturer Support
I was pleasently suprised to find Epiphone not only easy to reach --but willing to send me owners booklet, sales brouchure including all equipment and actually all materials given to new instrument buyer free of charge including the phone call even though I made it clear my SG G-400 was used.
The Wow Factor
From sound, fit & finish, color, materials used, overall shape, ease of use, and plain abilty to get alot of attention and just look great in a crowd -- the SG - G-400 has it all.

"great guitar,ok sound,decent price"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
great guitar fast neck great quality. the thing i liked least about it was the pickups.
Sound
The guitar has crappy stock Epi pickups, which sound ok, but i would replace them immediately! I got mine at a guitar center shop with Grover tuners which are ok.
Features
Mine had a darker finish with ripples in it, kinda like the G-400 Vintage but with a glossy finish. i would have put on different pickups if i were epiphone, but whatever.
Ease of Use
the neck is fast and smooth and the body is light and great
Quality
the guitar dents easily and leaves scratches easily,if you got a ebony, you can see everything on it.
Value
i wouldnt say its worth $400 maybe $370 or $350
Manufacturer Support
havent had to talk to epiphone or guitar center. i put on a full face pickguard, which overlapped the toggle switch washer which was fine with me, cause i could hardly notice it. i am going to get burstbuckers, which hopefully sound alot better.

I think i will be satafied for a while until i become better at palying the guitar then looking for a better gutiar like a top of the line brand name instrument.

Features
The features I wish it had was having acessories but that would make the price greater so I think it is good none the less.
Ease of Use
I do not know yet for i have not gotten my self to buy the guitar yet
Quality
The product is made well but i have seen some cheaper guitars with better next woods for a lot less. But other then whats written i dont know alot because i have not yet bought the instrument.
Value
It is good value because other than a retailer the price is alot lower

"chhyea?!"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
The epiphone g400 gets the job done at an affordable price and makes a good starter guitar, though I think their are better guitars at around the same price. I plan on selling mine and buying an ibanez rg350dx
Sound
The alnico v's sound ok but i wouldn't go as far as calling it good. With mine you can hear feedback after about 5 seconds leaving it still. Also the pinch harmonics don't have much of a squeal. I'd recommend replacing the pickups if you plan on keeping the ol' g400.
Features
This guitar looks a lot better than it sounds. The trapezoid inlays on the rosewood fretboard look fantastic. The chrome hardware and silver top knobs look great too. I hunted around to find one with a white finish and looks absolutely stunning with the black pickguard. I just wish there was an option for a full pickguard rather than a half pickguard.
Ease of Use
Pretty easy. its slim neck with the double cutaway horns makes for easy upper fret action.
Quality
Mine had no blemishes, however the paint got chipped and i've never dropped it once. Also my Low E string comes out of tune a lot if i bend it while playing in Drop C.
Value
I purchased this back when they cost 400$ =/

Sound

Features

Quality

Value
Not worth the price.

"Epiphone - I applaud you!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

Ill always keep it but ill probably get a gibson or ESP when i get the money (may be a while). If your a little down on the financial side of life then this guitar is PERFECT for playing, learning, gigging, recording and just down right showing off! If it were lost or stolen i would buy it again! Epiphone - I applaud you! Awesome guitar for the money! well worth it! GET ONE!
Sound
The sound is generally excellent. It handles clean and heavy distortion well but sounds brill with light, crisp distortion - Black sabbath, ACDC etc. It sounds almost as good as its gibson counterpart.
Features
Mahogany body looks awesome. I like the half pickguard as it shows off more of the mahogany. 2 alnico-vs sound good but not as good as EMGs. THeyre good but not so good for "squealies".
Ease of Use
Really playable neck and fretboard. Most comfortable playability of any instrument out there due to double cutaway and set neck. brill
Quality
Fantastic finish but a couple of chipped bits of paint around the set neck but they are really hard to spot and they're probably due to poor packing not build quality. People often say that if you drop it, it will break into millions of pieces but i dropped my beast and it didnt even scratch!
Value
Fantastic value for money worth every penny (im english u c) got to be the best guitar around for the money!

This guitar could work for me for many years to come.
Sound
The sound on this guitar is amazing for what you pay. There is a little neck buzz on the low E string but other than that, I love it. When I got mine I needed to fix the intonation and the action was a bit too high. Since then, it's been perfect.
Features
Looks awesome. comes with .10 gauge strings which is good for this type of guitar. The neck is glued on rather than bult on, which I prefer.
Ease of Use
This guitar is very easy to get the hang of, Epiphone/Gibson guitars tend to have shorter necks so it seems like the frets are all pushed up towards the head, after you get used to that it plays like a dream.
Quality
This guitar was made very well and it is easy to tell. But my guitar teacher has the same guitar from made about 10 years earlier. His has a slightly thinner body, mine is kind of squarish.
Value
For what you pay, this is a very nice guitar it is worth every cent.
Manufacturer Support
haven't needed it.
The Wow Factor
I knew I had to have this guitar as soon as I saw it, I'm keeping it.

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

This thing rocks. Its not a gibson but I think 300 dollars is really cheap for such a good guitar. I actually could have got a gibson but im not that good yet so Ill wait.
Sound
The sound is real nice, liked it better than the other epi's. Replace the pickups and it will probably sound like a gibson.
Features
It doesn't have alot of features but its not an amp its a guitar.
Ease of Use
The fretboard is roomy and great for people with big hands that like to solo.
Quality
If you take care of it im sure it wont break.

Sound
The sound is amazing! It has alot to choose from with the two volume/tone knobs
Features
The two volume and tone knobs are very helpful when your trying to critique your sound.

"A great guitar"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This is guitar is a great guitar and at a great price. To me, its the same thing as a gibson but with a less known name, and less of the price. I think i will be using this guitar until i can actually afford a gibson. but until then, which is never, this guitar was a great find.
Sound
Great sound. Playing solos on this guitar sound so nice and clean.
Features
I just like how you can use it as a foot switch as well. Like what i do is i put the rythm tone on low like 1 or 2 on volume so the distortion is off, and then put the treble tone on 10 so i can switch between clean and distortion. It helps alo if your amp sucks and can't switch between anymore with a foot switch.
Quality
This guitar is very well made, even for an epiphone. Its really light compared to les pauls and other guitars. The colour and the finish on this guitar is awesome.
Value
A great guitar at a great price, and to be honest, theres no difference between this guitar and $1400 gibson.
Manufacturer Support
Yeah, haven't came to any problems yet.
The Wow Factor
As soon as i saw this guitar in the store, i picked up it up, played it, and bought that day and i dont regret it.

Epiphone G-400 Guitar Customer Review

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
i originally wanted this guitar, before i had any money and before i tried it out. I still want it becuz it's great, but i actually think i might keep saving for the gibson sg standard, because then i could say "i have a gibson that sounds good" instead of "i have a gibson wannabe that still sounds good". much more believable with the gibson. and it would be my "baby", or what have you, if it was a gibson that i payed 1200 dollars for, and i would cherish it my entire life. a 350 dollar epiphone isnt as good of a baby.
Sound
I dont own the guitar, but I played it out in a music store one time, and I was really amazed. The pickups are awesome, with a pretty high-output, and it sounded really good, both on overdrive and clean. I tried it on some marshall amp (i think avt 50), so thats probably why it sounded so good. Even my 180 dollar yamaha fat strat copy sounds good on my marshall amp, but still it's not as good as this. I actually cant imagine that the gibson sg could be all that much better than this, if that says anything, but i've never played it so i cant really say.
Features
it had 2 tone and 2 volume controls and a 3 way pickup selector switch. rosewood fretboard, it think. the only complaint i had was that the guitar had no gloss/finish (the clear stuff that goes over the paint on electric guitars and makes it shiny, if you will). The body was just plain painted wood, and that seemed kind of odd to me. idk if it was just that one, or if they're all like that.
Quality
it seemed really sturdy and solid, but at the same time not too heavy either. And the neck was great, as i said. seeing as the only guitar i own is the 180 dollar yamaha i mentioned, this thing is built like and plays like a dream come true. i give it a 9 for not having a glossy finish, because i like gloss.
Value
great value, especially for $350, becuz i havent seen it cheaper anywhere else.
Manufacturer Support
my dad had an acoustic epiphone guitar, and he rarely played it, but now he gave it to me. its at least 12 years old, and everything works wonderfully except for a tiny bit of rust on the frets. that has nothing to with support, i now realize, after i wrote all of that, but it's a good thing for you to know.
The Wow Factor
yes ( i always thought people were being funny when they talk about sex appeal, but now i realize they're not funny at all, because one of the questions is how do rate the sex appeal.)

Epiphone G-400 Guitar Customer Review

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

I expect this guitar to last for 7 years becuase of its great quility.
Sound
This guitar has great sound to it. With the two gibson pick ups which make it sound better than any other epiphone. The guitar sounds even better hooked up to a amp. You can switch from rythem to tremble by just a flick of a switch.
Features
This product came with the two gibson pick ups and what makes it nice is that design of the body letting you reach all the way to the 22nd fret with no hasel. The neck is made aof a mahogany and has a old school look to it!
Quality
This product is made from the best mahogany wood and its an epiphone so they are sure to show quility in every asspect. This guitar I have had for 4 years and it still sounds brand new!
Value
This product is worth the money. At its original price of $580 its deffinently worth it. I would seize the oppurtunity while it lasts!
Manufacturer Support
Thee company is great it has a life time warrenty on mostly every guitar they make. If something happens to it they are sure to fix it for you!
The Wow Factor
It looks great and has that old school rock look to it. From the tradtional gibson style look to the redd hot body its a "wanna"the at first site.
