"CAD E350... Amazing"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Once a manufacturer stops making a product, it seems everyone wants it and it becomes one of the greatest pieces of gear. So is the case for a CAD E350. Other vintage mics I own, don't often live up to the hype, but the E350 does, in spades. Possibly the best microphone I have ever heard. It has a silky presence, smooth even response and a touch of magic that tickles your ear in a way that is indescribable. It has all the qualities of the great mics of old, wrapped into one package. Maybe that's why the mic is so large. I have used it for voice over, singers, guitar, oboe, you name it, it makes everything shine. CAD should take notice and reintroduce this mic, which was made totally in the USA. It's a rare gem.

Musical Background:

45 years of playing Drums, 37 years of commercial production and Voice Over.

Musical Style:

Classic Rock, Jazz.

No one mic is perfect for every possible application. But, this mic has certainly done a spectacular job on every task I have put it to. If you steal it, I will hunt you down. On the off chance I don't find you, I'll definitely buy another.
Sound
I use this mic to record everything from voiceovers to acoustic guitars and find it to be one of the best (if not the best) large-condenser studio mics out there. The sound reproduction is clean, transparent and full. I know of one major TV network that is using this mic exclusively for all the v.o. on their promos - I would call that a riniging endorsement. I got to compare the E-350 against a slew of other mics from the same genre for a magazine article last year, and found this one to be the best of the bunch - which included several entries at more than twice the price!
Features
WIth a 3-micron gold sputtered diaphragm, vintage capsule, and unique high-speed op-amps coupled with a bass roll-off switch, -10dB pad, and three postition polar pattern there aren't too many other features that could be added. The included spider-shockmount and locking aluminum flight case don't s@@k either!
Quality
Probably the most robust mic of it's kind that I've ever seen. Of course, you need to handle your large condensers with some modicum of care. But, mine has take a couple of spills in the studio with absolutely no ill effects.
Value
As stated above, this mic beats out many "top mics" that retail for more than twice as much, in my opinion. I call this baby a "U87 killer". Plus, if you look hard enough you can get some very attractive street prices on this mic.
Manufacturer Support
Haven't had to deal with them.
The Wow Factor
The only thing more impressive than the appearance of this vintage-looking mic is the recordings you'll get it! I'd say it belongs in any mic locker ... but since you can't use it when it's locked up, it really belongs in any STUDIO!
