"ART SLA-1 Power Amp - live sound review"

I use this amp in my main guitar rig in a combination pedalboard.rackmount system based around the Tech21 PSA 1.1 preamp. A lot of processing goes into this amp, zero noise, clean, reproduces what it sees. I run XLR line level into it after the signal is stepped up through a PreaSonus tube instrument preamp. I have zero bad issues with this amp, great value for the money. Studio quality, can hear the fan only when shutting down the rig mains. Problems others have may not be the amp but connection, cables, impedance, ground loop issues. I love it myself, would not hesitate to but ART power amps. Great product!!

"Rack Power"

I am currently using this to amplify a Line 6 Helix into two 8ohm 4x12 cabinets. Easy setup & operation. It works well in my live rig. I would buy it again without hesitation. I own several ART products, some of which have been going strong for over 15+ years; so I don't have to guess about the quality. Minor gripe: I wish it had quarter inch outs in addition to the binding posts.

"A great amp."

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
1 RU, easy to fit in your rack. With 100 watts per channel it has plenty of power for the studio. Variable speed cooling fan is silent most of the time. Interchangeable front face plate allows the gain control to be concealed from fiddling fingers. Signal present and clip LED's plus protect LED's to let you know when the amp mutes. We use these in radio studios, to be able to prevent our personnel from cranking the amp to "11" and blowing the speakers is a big plus. A worthy replacement for the venerable old Crown D-75, but you get more power. In the last few years we have been using these we have had zero problems with them. Very reliable, looks easy to work on too. Very high quality audio from these, this amp would fit in well to an upscale home stereo system. Inputs are either balanced XLR or 1/4" phone plug, balanced or unbalanced works in these jacks. Output connections are high quality insulated binding posts. At the price this is a great deal.
Sound
Open, natural. For what you pay for this it's pretty much A-OK. There are "better" sounding amps out there for a much higher price.
Features
I like the interchangeable block off plate, also the controls can be pressed into the unit to prevent unintentional gain adjustments. A second press will cause the know to pop back out.
Ease of Use
This is a studio power amp, almost no learning curve. The sources just plug right in, the speakers are easy to connect.
Quality
The unit appears to be well made with imported quality components throughout.
Value
Yes. A good value.
Manufacturer Support
I have not needed their services.
The Wow Factor
Looks good, fits into a single rack space, I left a single space above this unit, it's got heat-sinks on the sides. It also has a rear mounted cooling fan.

This is my first Rack Amp, I'm running a Line 6 HDX Pro processor, it is dead quite and powerful ! Simple to hookup and use , there is an optional front plate that covers the intenuator adjustments so your adjustment cannot be changed , I'm running two 2x12's at 4ohms , it can get ridiculously loud , puts out what you put in incredibly transparent , thumping lows to shimmering highs, did I say Dead Quite ? Killer amp for a guitar rig.

"ART SLA-1 noisy fan"

I installed this amp in a studio. Here's the email I got from a user the next day. "Noticed the new amp in the studio... by the noise it generates! Heard this high-pitch, whining, humming noise, traced it to the new amp. Almost sounds like a fluorescent ballast going bad. Why does a new amp make noise? Would it be unreasonable to ask for the old amp be reinstalled, because it was quiet? Or maybe move the new amp to somewhere we can't hear it? Please let me know your thoughts, as the noise is just annoying." As an amp, it's OK, I like the security panel, balanced inputs. But the fan noise just makes it unacceptable. Sorry.

My previous monitor amp died a week ago. I picked up this ART SLA-1 as a replacement and I love it! Mine was delivered just yesterday, so I set it up last night and listened to a few recent mixes using the SLA-1. I hooked up my Tannoy monitors to it and I can hear some details in a recent remix I did that I could not hear previously. I would highly recommend this as a studio monitor amp. It is compact, powerful, and very clean. The output is really detailed and clear.

Musical Background:

Playing, writing, recording for nearly 20 years now. Lots of recent remixes for others as 'Diopter'.
