VHT Special 6 Guitar Combo Amplifier

No longer available at zZounds
VHT packed some killer features into this handwired 6-watt combo amplifier, like a Gain Boost and a High/Low power switch to control your overdrive.

Boutique amp players will love the VHT Special 6's combination of handwired tube goodness, unique features and unparalleled value. The mod-friendly Special 6 is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube amp enthusiasts.

The Special 6 gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones -- it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, handwired, simple, 2-knob package.

To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer. The Special 6 combo is outfitted with a special high sensitivity 10" VHT Special Design speaker.

If you're a working musician doing your research for a new, small combo, look no further. Loud enough for cafe/coffeehouse/hotel gigs or rehearsals for most situations with drummers, ultra portable and a great range of sounds. Make sure you swap the tubes out first thing. I put in a Tung Sol 12AX7 and a NOS Sylvania 6V6 and was genuinely stunned at the extra headroom and improvement in an already decent-sounding amp.I play both guitar and harmonica and was knocked out with the sound, playing through a modded Astatic mic. Creamy, smooth honk if you're a serious harmonica player. ESPECIALLY if you play both harp and guitar, you need this little powerhouse, which replaces a 1959 Rickenbacker combo as my main harp amp.

Sound
Most jazz, country, blues, Americana or roots musicians will love the detail, breakup and richness of the sound they can get from this amp. I can even get some acceptable industrial/metal sounds from it for recording.

Features
Love the array of tones available by pulling out the volume or switching from low to high power and working the volume and attack on my Strat.

Ease of Use
You'd have to work to get bad sounds out of this thing, IMHO.

Quality
Solid build, arrived from zZounds via FedEx undamaged and all appeared to be as well-built as the reviews frequently say for this amp.

Value
For the $249 and free read more shipping, this amp just floors me with the combination of boutique quality amp sound, solid build and utility.

The Wow Factor
Looking forward to springing this on some friends on a casual gig later this month. The soundman is going to love the low stage volume.
