I bought one to initiate my transition to 5 string after YEARS of playing Fender basses. The playability and tone was great, right out of the box. I wound up putting flatwounds on the 1st one to get a vintage-y tone. I decided I wanted a 5 to have roundwounds as a backup (and an option for recording) so I bought #2. At this price point, there is NO OTHER BASS on the planet that compares. I have played basses ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, and this bass really holds it's own. The Ken Smith BSR design is timeless and translates very well to this bass. The passive pickups are of moderate output, but there are lots and lots of really useable tones to be had. I am actually considering getting a 3rd bass to use as a test bass/frankenstein to try out parts/strings, etc.
