Classic Tonewood Combination

The Gibson SG Standard Faded is distinguished first and foremost by its all-mahogany body carved into the classic double-cutaway design. It is joined to the neck with a deep-set, totally flush wood-to-wood joint, leaving no air space in the neck cavity to achieve maximum contact between the neck and body. The result is a bass tone that is characteristically punchy and articulate, with notable sustain and presence. The neck dimensions stay true to the original 1960s design, with the popular 30.5-inch scale length and 1.6-inch width at the nut.

Classic Tonewood Combination

The three-way adjustable bridge utilized by the Gibson SG Standard contributes to the unique feel and playability of the SG bass. It allows you to adjust and fine-tune the height of the strings in all directions: front, back, and side-to-side. This gives the bridge a "floating" feel and makes it more customizable to the player than other basses. Along with the lightweight body and double cutaway, this bridge is the most defining characteristic of the Gibson SG Standard.

Vintage-Style TB and TB Mini Humbuckers

But of course, the SG wouldn't be complete with a classic pair of humbucking pickups. The pickups on the SG Standard have remained largely true to the design and sonic character of the originals. The pickups in today's SG Standard Bass are the vintage-style TB Plus humbucker and TB Mini humbucker. Both are wax-potted and channel a sound that is at once recognizable and powerful. The TB plus humbucker in the neck is a meaty full-frequency pickup with serious thunder power. The TB Mini humbucker in the bridge is smaller in size, but packs a sweet punch with great mid-range for punchier bass lines or solo voicings.

Baked Maple Fingerboard

The fretboard on the Gibson SG Standard Bass is constructed from baked maple, and contains 20 frets with attractive acrylic dot inlays. Baked maple is known for providing excellent sustain to even the highest gauge bass strings, and furthers the tonal bite and punch of the SG Standard.

Product Description

During the height of Gibson's original "Golden Era," the company's only bass guitar at the time--the EB0--underwent the same radical transformation as the Les Pauls, which were being redesigned as the now classic SG. It was a bold move and it paid off, bringing Gibson basses to the forefront. Today's SG Standard Bass recreates the classic, dual-pickup version, staying true to the design and specs of the original, including the popular 30.5-inch scale length.

Three-Way Adjustable Bridge

Gibson's innovative three-way adjustable bridge is the standard for simplicity and functionality. It provides players with the ability to adjust and fine-tune the height of the SG Standard Bass' strings in all directions--front, back, and side-to-side--which gives the bridge a "floating" feature, thus allowing the bass to be equipped with a variety of string gauges and multiple set-up options. The SG Reissue's legendary resonance, tone, and sustain is the result of anchoring the bridge directly into the body at its three adjustable points, which provides a firm seating for the strings and yields a strong union between the strings and body. Readily accessible screws make setting the intonation simple. To this day, Gibson's three-way adjustable bridge remains an industry standard. It is the epitome of form and function in bass guitar bridge design.

Set-Neck Construction

Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on the SG Standard Basses are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart--a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar insures a "wood-to-wood" contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.

Vintage-Style TB and TB Mini Humbuckers

The pickups on the early Gibson basses of the 1960s remained unchanged for many years, undergoing only minor cosmetic modifications from time to time, but staying true to the originals' sonic characteristics. The pickups in today's SG Standard Bass--the vintage-style TB Plus humbucker and TB mini humbucker--are wax-potted and capture and recreate the classic attributes of those early Gibson basses. The TB plus humbucker in the neck is a traditional hum-cancelling bass pickup with a full frequency, heavy-bottom sound, similar to pickups with a passive EQ. The EB mini humbucker in the bridge is traditionally smaller but packs a sweet punch with exceptional mid-range presence. This combination makes the SG Standard Bass a versatile instrument with a wide range of tonal possibilities.

20-Fret Baked Maple Fingerboard

The fingerboard on the Gibson SG Standard Bass is constructed from baked maple. Baked maple characteristics include good sustain with plenty of bite.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Plugged and played."
Overall: I purchased this instrument on line from zzounds two days ago and it was in my hands this afternoon in time for praise band rehearsal. I tuned, plugged, and played. Set up and intonation were spot on as best as I could tell. I may make some adjustments as time goes on, but I am very pleased with it as-is. This bass tunes very easily and has plenty of punch without sounding tinny. I normally play mandolin or guitar, so the short scale is perfect for me. This bass is lighter than most, as I was able to play using a piece of 1/4" nylon cord as a makeshift strap without any discomfort.Fit and finish are perfect. The neck joint is flush and cannot be felt at all. I ordered the brown color and the grain is really nice. Its called "worn" but is better described as a natural wood grain finish. The smell indicated it was finished with linseed oil, which is fine with me. Neck is straight and frets are finished well with no sharp ends sticking out. There is not a lot of glitz and glamour with this bass. There are no fancy inlays and even the Gibson logo is a screen print. It is, however a quality piece and a bargain at zzounds price.
Style of Music: Bluegrass, Bluegrass gospel, Traditional and Contemporary Christian.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "I like it..I like it allot."
Overall: I had searched everywhere for this bass in faded brown and was told more than once that they were discontinued. I was about ready to give up when I found one at Zzounds...in faded brown...and for $100 less than a cherry or black one anywhere else. I ordered it on a Tuesday and it arrived (free shipping) on Friday, AFTER I had left for band practice. Saturday morning I unpacked her, tuned her up, and took a test run. Great sound unplugged. Looked her over closely and was impressed...okay, it's an all-mahogany bass, faded finish, no binding, nothing flashy. That's okay. Nice neck. Simple layout. Volume, volume, tone. Grover tuners. Frets finished nicely. Plugged her in to my Ampeg PF500 w/2x10 and 1x15. Plenty of variation in sound with blending pups and adjusting tone. Very pleased. Restrung with flatwounds and IMHO sounds better. Short scale took a little getting used to, but think my Jazz bass will be relegated to back-up duty. If you've considered getting a SS bass, this is a steal. Not much more than a SS Epi or Fender, but infinitely better.
Style of Music: Classic/country/southern rock, blues, country.
