Sennheiser EW 152 G3 Set Customer Review

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I purchased this microphone for church use a few weeks ago and have not been disappointed. I purchased the predecessor of this model 8 years ago for another facility, and those seem to still be operating without issue. Sound and reception quality on this unit is great. I've tested it with the base and the transmitter a full 150+ feet apart with a brick wall and multiple doors in between. Even at that range with those significant chunks of building in the way, reception was comparable to the budget wireless mics previously used. My only real complaint about this mic is the location of the On/Off button. It is underneath the battery door, so I generally have to give a 60 second walkthrough on how to use it. Also, when turning it off you must hold the button down. That by itself isn't a big deal, but if you tap it it asks the user about turning off RF. This has confused some of the people speaking who aren't technically inclined. The frequency selection options are amazing as I believe there are 200+ frequencies to pick from. The base unit even has a scan option to quick pick which bank of frequencies is best for you. I don't have any concern about finding open frequencies or having to trade it back for another model with a different channel bank. Other nice little features worth mentioning include: * Base to transmitter sync (copy all settings from base unit to transmitter over short range IR) * User programmable naming (Green mic, Blue mic, etc shows on the screen) * Base station visual feedback: Screen shows RF reception, audible volume reception, mute switch status, battery status, and programmable name. * Pilot tone: The tone eliminates the nasty click/scratch noises heard when turning a transmitter on/off. * Easy mic swap: Transmitter mic connector is a standard 1/8th headphone jack. This makes it very easy to use anything with a headphone out as a source if desired. * Drop in charger option: Haven't purchased it, but the transmitter has side charging contacts. * Receiver base unit antennas: Stubby antennas using standard BNC connectors allow for a good deal of flexibility. Not only do they take up minimal space, antenna extension cords are very easy to come by. Pros: * Build quality, RF reception quality, clean sound, lots of information for tech watching receiver base, great mic position for picking up both sung and spoken voice Cons: * User training needed to turn on/off, wall wart transformer is large, wrap around headset mic is large and is not the preferred mic for visually oriented speakers and performers. The headset frame itself could be more comfortable, but not a huge deal. FYI: Transmitters take a pair of AAs.
