It's a transformer driven passive direct box, with the added bonus of a volume control. It works fine, and the quality of construction looks good. I'm using it to convert my active bass guitar signals to a line level XLR input for my Presonus ADL 700 preamp. The mounting flanges are an added bonus if you want to permanently mount it to your desk or wall or rack enclosure. I used double sided tape, which works for my situation. No complaints.
