I just got this amp today and Ive been playing it for a few hours and Im already in love. 1 little baby watt of Marshall power, responsive 3 band EQ, good sounding reverb, tone shift mid scoop all in a two channel amp with an included rugged footswitch with LED.This little guy has some amazing tones under its tiny hood. Using a Gibson Les Paul and an ESP KH-2 I was able to coax everything from pristine cleans to overdriven crunch to metal madness out of this bad boy. The amp really as a charm all its own. Before I talk about what it is, let me talk about what it is not.Its not a gigging amp, or even an amp for band practice. It doesn't sound like a JCM 800 stack on full blast, and its not going to knock down walls or blow out windows. If you're looking for a sound like that, look elsewhere. Now onto what it is:Simply put, its the best sounding bedroom practice all tube amp Ive ever heard, and Ive heard a lot of them. Whether Orange Microdarks, or Blackstar HT1R's, VHT special 6's, or Bugera V5's, and Vox Ac4's. And this little Marshall kills them all(although special nod to the microdark, that is a really cool amp with its own sound)To me one of the hallmarks of a great amp is being able to just put all the EQ at noon, turn it on, go in raw with just a guitar and it already sounds good. And that's what this amp did. Tweaking the knobs just led to even better sounds. Now granted I was using a $3000 guitar and a $5000 guitar and that certainly helps, but I think even a decent mid range price guitar with good pups will make this little guy sing. The EQ on the DSL range has been revoiced and I hear it in comparison to my old DSL5c. Its easier to find an EQ setting that is a decent compromise for both channels now. The high end fizz on the old DSL's is gone and the Ultra gain channel has many more usable sounds now all the way up the gain knob(it does get a bit crazy around 9 or 10, but hey, that's what 9 and 10 are for right?)The clean channel has very nice pristine cleans up to around 9 o clock on the volume knob. At around 10 o clock you start to hear a hint of break up when hitting the strings hard. 11 o clock is some good Marshall crunch, 12 o clock your into Hendrix zone with a strat or ACDC with an SG. By around 3 o clock you're closing in on JCM800 type tones. I shall try boosting with overdrive and see how that sounds. Now a word about the speaker. The speaker is a little guy. It is a legit Celestion speaker, but still an 8 inch speaker. It does not sound bad by any means, especially after driving it hard for few hours and start to break it in. But this speaker gets a lot of flak because it doesn't sound like its 12 inch big brothers. Well of course it doesn't. No 8 inch speaker will. You are not going to rattle the floors with crushing low end from an 8 inch speaker, and Im always surprised when people expect that and are let down.As I said at the beginning, this is a practice amp, and if you judge it as such, its probably the best practice amp Ive ever heard. Don't judge it as something its not, but embrace it for what it is, a killer little all tube practice amp packed with legit Marshall tone.

The DSL1CR is so good that I sold my other practice amps and bought two of these. They sound awesome. I play mostly hard rock, and the tubes sound amazing. They take pedals great! It has an effects loop too, and the built in reverb sounds good. To be honest, I had to send one back, as it was cutting in an out, but zZounds sent me one as soon as UPS verified that it had been returned. Marshall and zZounds Roooock!

This is an amazing little amp. Big, clear tube tones and really great gain structure. Best you can sound in your living room. AMAZING tone. It is 1 watt,...and has a half power setting. Buy this.

I love this thing so much that I bought two of them! I keep one in my practice room and another in the living room so I can jam any time. The DSL1 sounds great at any volume, although I like it up enough to get some power tube warmth. It really sounds like what you would hope a small Marshall should sound like. The reverb is actually really good too.

This little amp is exactly what I had been searching for. i wanted a small, valve amplifier with an fx loop, usable reverb and lots of gain. This amp does that and more. I love how it even has a "low power" switch you can use if the 1 watt is still too much. The clean sounds are extremely clear and transparent - they will definitely reveal sloppy playing! The high gain sound is where this little guy really shines. I was blown away by just how gnarly this thing sounds with the gain at 2-3 o'clock. Classic Marshall sound and then some. I think the price is just right for what this is. Get one.

I’m a little mixed on this review because I think of it’s working right it’s a GREAT sounding amp. Unfortunately mine shipped and shortly thereafter started intermittently popping and crackling then finally losing power where I can barely hear it on the clean channel and it’s like a clean signal with not much volume on the drive channel. I’m past the return time for zZounds and I emailed Marshall but never got a reply. Cheap amp but I guess that comes at the cost of quality.

I've had my Marshall DSL1CR for less than week and I have gone from very disappointed to absolutely dumfounded.I ordered the combo after considering the head version. I opted for the portability aspect of the combo. (I was already familiar with the stock 'Celestion Eight 15' speaker. A very good yet "highly affordable" speaker with a nice tone that can range from cooing dove to howler monkey if needed.)Well, I got the amp and cranked it up and was profoundly disappointed. It had piercing highs and no real depth and the classic gain channel sounded like it was running through a cheap fuzz pedal.I knew the speaker needed to be broken in for a smoother overall tone but this was just awful. Then I had an idea... I have an awesome Randall RG1003 head that I use with my two Marshall MG4x12 cabs. Now here's where being crazy enters the picture. I have a "cab merger" box. It swaps signals from series to parallel and vice versa so it's great for avoiding impedance mismatches. The conveniently placed external speaker jack is inconveniently rated at 16 ohms making the choice of external cabs limited in number UNLESS you have a cab merger.I hooked the DSL1CR to the two 8 ohm 4x12's in 'series' via the cab merger and was treated to a tone that was bewilderingly EPIC. Imagine a Marshall stack being driven by a one watt amp. Sound crazy? It actually sounds magnificent. Using a Fender Player Series HH Tele w/coil splitter and my Trusty MXR Distortion +, I ran through all sorts of pickup settings and was blown away.Through an 8" speaker this amp was a disappointment - it should come with a 12" speaker. Through a pair of MG4x12's (which ARE GOOD CABS, regardless of what some Internet trolls say!), this amp became a rock monster that is potentially deafening. And I do mean DEAFENING. I wouldn't have believed I was playing a one watt amplifier. The amp is well made, solidly constructed and comes with the footswitch to change channels. Me, I prefer the classic gain with the MXR. The Ultra Gain channel is massive but controllable thanks to the very responsive EQ controls. A little gain goes a long way.On it's own this amp screams "potential" but through a properly impedance-matched full stack, it realizes its' potential. You could definitely gig with this set-up if you mic it.
