TASCAM DR-701D 6-Track Field Recorder for DSLR

No longer available at zZounds
Capture audio on up to 6 tracks on rock-solid SD card media. Ideal for DSLR filmmakers, the DR-701D has 4 XLR mic inputs, HDMI I/O, and SMPTE timecode input.

The TASCAM DR-701D is TASCAM's flagship recorder for single-shooter video production. A timecode generator is included for location reference, which can be jam synced from a SMPTE generator, camera, or smart slate. The HDMI in and out allows a DSLR camera to start recording on both devices, and video clock prevents drift between sound and picture.

Four mic inputs can be individually recorded and mixed to a stereo track, for a total of six-track recording. For additional tracks, multiple units can be cascaded together. The lightweight yet rigid chassis is forged from a magnesium alloy. Tripod mounts on the top and bottom of the unit allow the unit to mount under a camera, attach to a follow-focus cage, or used stand-alone.

Designed for the needs of professional filmmakers, television producers, advertisers, and documentarians, the DR-701D packs high quality multitrack recording into a package compact enough for use with any camera.

Went exploring for an upgrade to our DR-40X camera rigs, wound up back with Tascam. We couldn't beat the DR-701D at this price-point and it's a big plus to be familiar with the Tascam way of doing things. Both recorders do a great job,and we can now use the DR-40X models for ambient sound and such, while the DR-701D as our primary. (We also use recorder monitors). We desired the SMPTE since we use an A6000 and once again, the DR-701D nailed it. Pretty cool to see Tascam still around and providing gear for the home-brew crowd! I can recall back when I lived alongside dinosaurs and vampires,we used cassette based Tascam PortaStudio's to cut demos. One other thing;Tascam met our needs so well, regarding our camera rigs, when we needed to add a mixer into our AA Discrete Synergy 4 interfaces stereo channel 3/4 inputs,we chose the 12 from Tascam. Wow,what a mixer/recorder/interface! We plan to upgrade to an SSL siX soon but the Tascam 12 is sticking around:too useful to give up. We didn't start off with intentions to have so much Tascam gear,but...here we are. We found gear that met all our needs,it was moderately inexpensive, has proven to be durable (if treated in a professional manner w/proper cases),and even speaks the same 'language' between devices. Money can buy better but these work great for us. zZounds has been the best all around vendor for a couple years now, even during the pandemic madness. We dig 'em,man!

Ease of Use
The learning curve is less read more than for the DR-40X handheld. Knobs are small but have to be to,so all good.

Quality
Plastic isn't my fave thang, yet these are very durable if treated correctly.

Value
This 6-track field recorder is perfect in it's niche of the world. Well done, Tascam. (Jinx, I HATE to say that because all my gear will usually stop working within a week but so far Tascam has been cool)
