This one-rack-space USB interface gives you sample rates up to 192 kHz and tons of I/O: 8 mic pres, 8 line outs, 2 banks of ADAT optical, and word clock I/O.

Analog and digital I/O come together in the Steinberg UR824 USB audio interface, giving you the kind of flexibility you need to record and work with any gear you've got. Built-in DSP technology, up to 192 kHz/24-bit audio resolution, DSP-powered monitoring, USB connectivity, bundled Cubase software, and a high channel count make the UR824 a standout choice for both project and professional studios.

8 Is the Magic Number

The slim, single-rack-space interface packs 8 analog ins and 8 outs with 8 Steinberg D-Pre Class-A microphone preamplifiers to match; support for +48V phantom power lets you work with any microphone in your closet. A pair of eight-channel optical ports are there for increasing your recording potential with even more preamps or additional UR824 units, while eight 1/4-inch outputs allow you to send custom mixes to your outboard gear and monitors.

Two pairs of ADAT optical I/O, which double as S/PDIF, give you 16 ins and 16 outs to use. And when you combine both optical ports, you can take advantage of S/MUX support to get 8 inputs and 8 outputs at 96 kHz, or 4 inputs and 4 outputs at 192 kHz. The UR824 also offers word clock I/O with two BNC connectors.

Powerful Built-In DSP

Add dimension to your sound with the UR824's software-controlled DSP monitor mixer, eight Steinberg DSP channel strips, and the built-in DSP REV-X reverb. Record and monitor to your heart's content with zero-latency effects and processing!

Get a grasp of Steinberg's dspMixFx read more mixer software and you have a sure-fire way to control the UR824's DSP effects, create multiple monitor and send mixes, and integrate other gear. I've been working with an M-Audio ProFire 2626 for quite some time. It's been a somewhat painful experience from temperamental FireWire (not every chipset works wit the interface), to lack of driver updates, etc.Recently, I decided to reevaluate what's available in audio interfaces. My requirements were as follows: 1. Must have stable drivers for Windows 8. 2. Must work well with Cubase. 3. Must support at least a 96k sample rate. 4. Must have low latency. 5. Prefer USB over FireWire for ease of setup. 6. Would like zero latency monitoring capability. 7. Prefer interfaces that can retain mix and other settings after powering off. 8. Would like to be able to expand to at least 16 inputs by cascading units. 9. Price. The Steinberg UR824 has met every one of those needs and more besides. It also has a built-in DSP chip that implements a hardware reverb with sends for each channel and a common return. Each channel also has it's own DSP-based parametric EQ and compressor called the Sweetspot Morphing channel strip. In addition, there are separate native software versions of both the reverb and channel strip provided with the unit. With the $200 rebate that Steinberg is currently running, this is an exceptional deal. I highly recommend upgrading the Firmware on the unit. Doing so will give you access to more sample rates. One warning though, the updater should be run only with the interface plugged directly into your computer and no other devices hooked up to the USB ports. It can read more be a little temperamental otherwise.
