The iconic microphone would remain largely unchanged until read more the release of the "Super 55" in 2009, named after the supercardioid microphone element housed within its satin chrome case.

I bought this mic as an "upgrade" for my SM58 to be my main microphone as the lead singer on my 10 year old music project. A lot of us musicians always want good looking instruments (as long as we don't sacrifice sound for looks) so I thought, why not have a good looking microphone too? I honestly wasn't expecting a much different sound than my SM58, in all honestly I was just hoping it would not be worse, but man I am glad I purchased this baby. The microphone is GORGEOUS. I got the matte black version, and it just looks and feels stunning. Even from a distance, this thing looks expensive. My first reactions when plugging it in was in my home studio. I use a SM7B as my main studio mic, and to be honest I wasn't quite pleased with the Super 55 in the studio setting. The mic is a lot brighter than the SM7B, and the plosives where MUCH more noticeable so I had to play a little bit with my diction to make it sound somewhat decent, I started to worry I might have made a bad decision. Fortunately we had band rehearsal that same night so I was able to test the Super 55 in a live setting. Well this is where this thing truly shines. We sometimes have trouble with feedback as we have 3 vocal mics in our 5 man band, I quickly noticed I could turn the gain on this baby quite higher than the SM58s my bandmates also use. I did have to EQ it slightly different than the SM as it does has a different tone to it. But to make things short, I don't think I will be reaching for my SM58 any time read more soon, this thing hit it out of the park for me. Not only were the plosives not an issue, but it made my voice cut through the mix much much more than any other mic that I have ever tested. Words sounded clear and feedback was NEVER an issue. We are a loud rock band, 3 guitars (think Foo Fighters) so we have to EQ the hell out of everything so the voice can be heard clearly over the 3 guitar amps, bass, and drummer. The Super 55 had no trouble making my vocals shine over the loud music. You do have to sing quite centered in the front, as this recent version has been upgraded to cut out sound coming from other sources, which I have read was a problem with the past Super 55 models. I very much recommend this amazing piece of equipment, if you can afford it. You will not be disappointed.
