I rarely write reviews, but after seeing the only other one being somewhat negative, I had to offer an alternative view. I picked this up last month and I haven’t put it down (other than to sleep!) since. The finish is flawless, the neck feels perfect — not too thin, not a baseball bat, and the 61 pickups sound absurdly good through my AC15, my Princeton, or my old vintage 12 watt Valco. Now, in the weeks since I bought it, they’ve released new ‘61 models — aside from the color, the locking tuners, and the knobs, they’re the same guitar on paper. To test that, I went to a local store and played one — mine is just as good — the sound and the feel is virtually identical, but it comes in a way cooler color and costs a few hundred bucks less. You can’t go wrong! The regular 2019 SG Standard, on the other hand, is a very different guitar. It has the batwing pickguard, 57 Classic pickups, and comes in a soft case. This version has the hard shell and every other spec the more expensive ‘61 models have, aside from the reflector knobs, which would cost you like 15 bucks to change. The locking tuners are an upgrade to me, but I’m sure you could find tulip buttons for a few bucks if you really wanted to. People love to say negative stuff about Gibson guitars, but this guitar is an absolute winner, full stop. And you know zZounds will take care of you in the unlikely event of a problem.
