Feature:
DAW interface to Cubase and other vendors is a big plus, allowing the familiar controls of the unit to operate the software-based controls. Built-in CD burner allows this to be a stand-alone unit, no longer have to fire up a PC to burn to disk. USB has several functions. Tracks are easily transferred wav files.
Quality:
Excellent all-metal case. Input jacks are top-mounted, making for easy access, but a bit of a rat's nest when many cables are being used. (I prefer the ease of access to aesthetics).
Value:
A multitrack recorder, drum machine, multiple effects that can be used simultaneously, CD burner, and Digital Audio Workstation with CubaseLE included. Price all of these separately, then decide for yourself!
Desirability:
I like the sound of Zoom's effects. Relatively easy set-up. No hassles with latency issues, patches, viruses, and everything else that drowns creativity when using PC-based software, especially when near the limits of the PC's capabilities.
Sound:
Excellent dynamic range. Very useable effects. Built-in drum machine sounds realistic, but difficult to program without help from external PC software.
Ease of Use:
Transport controls are the familiar tape type controls. Menus can be a little tedious on such a small LCD display. Individual channel strip type layout, with a small meter bridge makes mixing a bit easier.
Support:
I noted a particular problem that would result in a track being accidentally recorded over, and reported this to Zoom. They have released a software upgrade that fixes this problem. One, or many voices? Who knows? What counts is that they listened and fixed the problem!
Overall:
PC-based recording can offer a lot of flexibility with plug-ins that a dedicated multitracker can't. However, using the multitracker as a controls interface, such as the HD16CD can, brings it back into the picture as a sensible way to input tracks without latency, then edit the tracks on the PC with Cubase, using the HD16CD to control it.
