I picked up this guitar when I was just starting out as a raw beginner. It seemed like a good value for money. I got the package system that was sold through Yamaha (known as the F310P), which includes a pitch pipe, gig bag, string set, picks, capo, strap and string-winder. Most people aren't aware that this guitar is made in Indonesia; at least that's what the Yamaha dealer told me. In my opinion, this guitar looks good enough and plays well enough for a beginner. Intermediate users should consider getting a solid-top guitar.
I picked it up as it came in a complete package, saving me the hassle of picking out the individual components to make my guitar experience a good one.
This guitar is a laminated top, and sounds rather tinny to me. But beginners should start with laminated tops as they can be subjected to more 'mishandlings' than can solid-tops.
The action was low enough for me, but the sound was lacking. But I stuck to this guitar for a year of so before I moved on to a quality solid-top.
Anyway, if you're spending below $300, expect to find most of the guitars made in Korean, Taiwan, China or even Indonesia.
Though some have commented that this guitar sounds better than a Martin, my response is...hardly! They must have been using either an imitation Martin or a badly damaged Martin, which fails to play properly.
The binding is poorly done and the tuners are rather bad (one of my tuners has come off), but what more could you expect for the price? In addition, the varnish chips easily, so don't be too rough on it.
Some reviews on the Net state that this is a fabulous guitar. If your noggin were in working order, you'd take comments like this with a pinch of salt.
