I had this piano for about a month before I purchased a Nord Piano 3. You probably think the Nord blows the Yamaha out of the water, but that just isn't true. I do prefer the Nord Piano Library for its flexibility and variety, but I have an RD-2000 as well, and I vastly preferred the Yamaha CP4 Pianos to those in the RD-2000. The piano sounds and electric piano sounds here, are just about the best you will find right now. The action, frankly puts the Nord Piano 3s to shame, and it is actually much faster and more responsive than the RD-2000 PHA-50. The only real fault I could find with the CP4, is that it is not the most robust as far as construction goes. In that department, the RD-2000 and Nord Piano 3 most certainly win, but I also wouldn't be afraid to gig with the CP4, provided you have a good HARD case. Don't use a "gig bag" please! Having the CFX samples, CFII Samples, and what turned out to be my favorite...the S6 samples, all in one instrument, is absolutely awesome! The ensemble sounds here are very good as well, and specially the pads and analog strings go well with the pianos. I am an extremely critical musician, and I evaluate all my gear with three criteria, in the following order. Build Quality (I give the CP4 a 6 out of 10)Feel (8.7 out of 10)Sound Quality (9 out of 10)If you are considering a Nord Piano, RD-800, or Casio Privia, you really ought to give the CP4 a serious look, listen, and PLAY!

"Way overpriced to compete. Better choices out there."

Don’t make my mistake and buy before you try. Shame on me as Im a pro for over 25 years. I assumed the CP4 would be a winner as I always loved Yamaha keyboards. Not this time. Yamaha is way off on what they offer for the price on this one. I had to return mine after realizing there are many better boards at a fair price. THE CP4 is nice but falls short compared to its competition. However it has very good action, average piano sounds, good stings, ok organs, and excellent electric piano sounds. etc . The sound is still dated to the old Yamahas and not much better than CP33, P155 and P105. The new CXS piano sound is ok but nothing better than the completions - It’s just another piano sample. CP5 is still the best bet for Yamaha if they are not going to update technology. The CP4 is not that user friendly. 5 band EQ is nice but 2 line LCD with everything abbreviated makes very annoying when in a live performance. It is light weigh but not all that well built. Feels like a Casio PX series or Yamaha P105. No longer the solid feel of the CP5 or CP33. That worries in the long run. Lately, on my quest, Ive tried them all and the best deal is the Kawai MP7. Fantastic in every way , sound, action, etc. AND priced perfectly for HUNDREDS less than CP4. The RD800 is truly a professional stage piano. Sounds incredible and extremely easy to use for a few hundred more than the CP4. However, it can’t compete with CP4 for size and weight. The CP4 would be an excellent value if it was priced the same as the Kawai MP7 or even the CP40. DONT RELY ON MY REVIEW OR ANYONE ELSE’S. You HAVE TO see, hear, and play for yourself and compare. I can assure you that CP4 disappoints when you go apples-to-apples.

"Gigs=Yes! Home=No!"

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
No, not at at all. Very good? Yes indeed. The action of the CP4 is wonderful. The acoustic piano sound is good, but no better than most other Yamaha pianos. So don't get excited for something that is going to blow you away. Electric piano sounds a good and useable. Overall, sounds very good on stage. No need for the missing string resonance live. It is disappointed not having it while recording of practicing with headphones. Sounds a little stale. I LOVE the light weight as I use the CP4 for frequently on the road. Bottom line its a good solid stage piano. Sure there are much better choices out there? But I like the weight and the sounds are not mind-blowing whatsoever but gets the job done for gigs. I would not recommend this for home use only. Defeats the purpose and you can find much better sounding home and stage pianos for less price. The CP4 would also not be my first choice for studio work. As nice as it might sound live I think in studio recordings you would hear all the flaws in the samples such as looping, lack of string resonance. But CP4 as a controller would work nicely in a studio. With all that in mind CP4 is what it is - a good gigging board with great action, good piano sounds, fair ease of use, and pretty good quality - a bit flimsy but solid enough for the road. Yes I agree it might be way overpriced, but you pay the premium for the light weight.. If you are looking for the "wow" factor keep shopping. If your looking for the "gig" factor then this might be your board. Also, always check with ZZounds for best price. They always come through for me when I need to purchase big price items. Im always happy with their service, but I can say that Im happy for all the products I choose!

"TERRIBLE sound."

Overall: 1 out of 5 stars

This keyboard has some very nice user-friendly features for a performing musician who wants to travel lean and mean. The action is great. I currently have two CP 105s, and have previously owned both previous versions - CP 85 and CP 95. And prior to those, the pricier CP 80, which I never really liked the sound of, but which was the best I could find at the time, within my budget. I've also probably had a good dozen students/friends buy the CP 85-115 models due to my recommendation. (And yes, the actions on these cheaper keyboards will start getting very noisy over time.) When I first saw the CP4 in the store, and saw some of its features, I started thinking on how to justify this one to my wife. But then I played it..........and discovered that the sound is just plain NASTY. Bright and harsh, without any of the warmth and richness of even the CP 85, although the individual notes were somewhat more even. I played this keyboard for about 20 minutes, because the action felt so good, and I kept thinking there must have been something wrong with my ears. After that, I spent several hours trying to clear my brain of the sound of this abomination of a keyboard, no exaggeration. Who's running the engineering department at Yamaha when it comes to assessing the single most important aspect of their new keyboards?! Yes, I know all about theories regard "cutting through the mix" and all that, but that doesn't explain why you can't find a piano setting on this keyboard that doesn't start making a root canal sound good. Going back to the CLP 840, I think Yamaha has produced some quite decent-sounding keyboards, even while utilizing their less-than-perfect wave technology.....and their heftier stage pianos - CP 200, 250 and 300 sound wonderful. But now here in 2017 they put this thing out and then actually call it the best stage piano they've ever developed?! Most definitely recommend that you actually try out this keyboard out first.......although that still won't help your poor audience if you do, for some reason, decide to actually buy it And it sure won't help you understand what a good piano sound should sound like at all. Guaranteed. (Review from current owner of a 1911 Steinway A and two Hamilton studio pianos; previous owner of a 1919 Steinway B, Yamaha G3, Yamaha U3, Yamaha U1, and numerous other quality uprights.)

Yamaha says it is "simply the best stage piano Yamaha has ever made." I beg to differ - for the price, the piano sounds and feel are just not that great. And the one that I bought had to be returned because it froze up a few times in the first week during performances. I now use a Yamaha P255 as my stage piano: great sounds, great feel, lighter and smaller than the CP4, and I also use it at home with the accompanying stand and 3-pedal assembly for a real piano experience.

"CP4 in a class of its own"

I just bought the CP4 over many other options out their. It came down to the CP4, MP7, and RD-800. All very nice stage pianos but when it came to quality and price the CP4 is the winner. Rd-800 has lovely action but sounds synthetic. The MP7 looks lovely but when i heard it I was not impressed. It was very heavy and had broken key. Stage pianos are supposed to be tough. CP4 sounds very open and dynamic. The action is wonderful to my fingers. I wanted a piano not a computer and thats what the CP4 is to me. Just like a piano in sound and touch. all the other digital pianos sem just like that .... DIGITAL. The CP4 is the only digital that feels and sounds like a real piano not a computer. You have to try for yourself to understand. It's very natural feeling for piano for a digital

"Glitchy voice modelling lets down otherwise serviceable unit"

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Nice action. Good case. UI is functional, though you can expect to do a lot of key-presses. Velocity is iffy when playing fast reps on the same key. But the big disappointment is the piano sound. Everything in the three acoustic piano voice banks is afflicted with the same cacophony. Be sure to try before you buy.- hold C0 and after two seconds, you'll hear the 11th harmonic (near F4) screeching over the top. It's the same with various low notes but the C0 is the most conspicuous.- certain notes are attenuated vs adjacent notes. Don't assume it's just your fingering.- the reverb effect favours specific notes. This can sound dreadful in some venues. But at least you can switch it off.- unfortunately, there's no adjusting the "spectral component" that makes a noise like hardened hammer felt. It's in balance through the low register, but starts to become annoying in the middle, then as you approach the higher notes, it overwhelms and evertually replaces the string sound altogether.Fortunately, the other voices are clear of these artefacts, so yes, buy this stage piano if you have no intention of trying to imitate a piano's sound.

What the heck is going on with negative reviews. CP4 is a top notch stage piano in every respect. I use this in for studio and stage productions and could not be happier with it's amazing sound. Sound is what i care most about and the CP4 produces spectacular nuances and details for my audience. Yamaha got it right. Reviews are nonsense I know. I am speaking to professionals only, consider the CP4 if you need a quality stage piano. Enough said.

"Not user friendly. Sound is missing something"

I bought the CP4 and it has wonderful key action. It is not user friendly when you need to edit quickly. The sound on all the pianos seem to be missing something, a certain brilliance that I was expecting. I also read reviews about this lack of sound resonance and maybe that is why this seems a bit flat. I will keep it as it is a very nice piano. But I was hoping for more. I do like the looks of the CP4 and find it very solid. But it is the sound that is most important and I think I can do better for this price range I spent. So I might still look at other pianos. I see Kawai and Roland have new models that look interesting. To each their on I guess. Wish I shopped around more.

"I wanted to love the CP4, but..."

I had high hopes for the CP4. The sound is dated and disappointing. The action is very good but I feel like Im playing $2,200 Casio. Nothing against casio, In Fact I returned my CP4 and now looking at the PX5S. It seems to have wonderful sound and extensive features for $1,000. I just cant get over how Yamaha released the Cp4 with a few extra features, a new piano voice that isn't that great, and less that appealing quality and build. AND then dare to say it's their best stage piano. Im not going to tell you to avoid the CP4 but I am going to tell you to demo it first. Do not buy blindly. If you have $2,200 to spend. You can do much better for less money of way better for a just few hundred more. ZZounds has great deals, I just happened to pick a loser. ...Well, I did mention the action is very good. Anyway , thank ZZ for great servcie

I am confused by the two previous reviews. I have played in a high energy classic rock band for over 20 years. I had a Korg SG pro X for 10 years which I loved. When I shopped around at G.C. and Chuck Levins the biggest music store on the East Cost, and tried at least 50 pianos. THE CP4 stood out with great action, great piano sounds, stings, organs etc and for those who claim they are not great, they don't know how to use the board which is extremely user friendly with a 5 band EQ and other ways to change tones on the fly. I tried them all folks and the only one people claim to be a contender with the CP4 is the Roland RD 800. The answer is NO, it's okay but not nearly as good

I have been playing piano over 20 rears in a high energy classic roots rock band, and have performing much longer. I have played all of the different piano especially before making this purchase. None stacked up to the CP4 for sound quality and ease of use on stage. Piano sounds and action are fantastic. The five band EQ makes it so easy to adjust tone on the fly. The other posts just don't make sense. I had a Korg SGPro X for 10 years and loved it. This is the first stage piano that I just had to get. No others including the Roland RD800 stand up to it..
