I bought this over a Fender Super Champ X2, Marshall Class 5 and Egnater Tweaker after researching them all. The fact that the Ultra 6 has an effects loop, variable wattage control and the point to point wiring sold me over the others. I started my mods by changing the tubes first. I changed to a 12AX7 Mullard RI in V1, a Tung Sol 12AX7 in V2 and a JJ El84 for the output (requires the adapter). I am currently looking into swapping out caps in the tone stack and installing a mod to make the channels foot switchable. It's not that this amp doesn't sound good the way it came from the factory, I just wanted to make it sound the way I want it to and that's the whole idea behind this amp - modding it! Rock solid build inside and out. You can get great cleans and really good rock and blues tones. You're not going to get high gain metal from this amp. Black Sabbath? Yes. Lamb of God? No. I am currently running it through a Marshall 4x12 and it gets VERY loud. Too loud to use in my home, but that's where the wattage control come in! I have it set on the low power setting with the wattage turned down to 25% and I get that cranked tone at volumes that won't get the police involved. I plan on purchasing the matching 1X12 cab in the near future because I've heard great things about it too. If you are in the market for a tube practice amp, do not hesitate. You could even mic it for gigs if you wanted. Pick one of these up and you will not be sorry!!

"Don't buy blemished amps from zzounds..."

This might be a good amp if you can get one that works right. I didn't have that luck though. I ordered a blem unit after assurances from Zzounds that they were still covered under warranty and had been tested. The first unit they sent me had a ultra channel that had such a bad solder joint in it that it didn't work at all until the amp was cranked. I sent it back as an exchange. The second amp had a clean channel that interacted with the ultra control knob in such a way that it cut out if the ultra know was anywhere near the top of its sweep. I will say that Zzounds was fairly prompt at getting me return authorizations and covered shipping, but I'm left with a few conclusions: 1) quality control at VHT leaves a lot to be desired 2) "hand wired in China" is not necessarily a good thing 3) Zzounds is not adequately testing their return units before reselling them. As far as manufacturer support, VHT (Music Link) returned my email within 2 days (they had no phone number available to the consumer) and expected me to pay shipping.
