I'm pretty happy with this unit. It was a good, low-risk introduction to digital recording. If you're looking for a unit for low-budget project and demo recording, this is a great choice. One reservation: You will want to have a pretty good computer setup before going with this or any other computer-based DAW. I'm getting by with my 1.6 gH PIII laptop with 512 megs of RAM, but I managed to crash the computer pretty spectacularly once while trying to do a mixdown with multiple reverb effects going at once. Having a soundcard that's optimized for digital recording (as opposed to GTA) is helpful, too.
Sound
I've been using this for three months to make useful demos. My limitations are more of an issue to me at this point than the unit's.
Features
This control interface and bundled Cubasis VST software has everything you need for recording quality demos. Good selection of echos, reverbs, and other effects.
Quality
Not a heavily-built unit. You wouldn't want to schlep this around on your roadhouse tour of the US, but that's not really its intended purpose.
Value
For its intended purpose--recording one-track-at-a-time demos for friends, family, and band members--this is just what the doctor ordered. I'm glad I took my buddy's advice and steered clear of the cassette portastudio. With a little coaching, this unit does just what I want it to do.
Manufacturer Support
Not applicable, though Tascam's support is reputed to be quite awful.
The Wow Factor
It's a tool. It's about as sexy as a toothbrush.

Overall, a great buy! Currently using it on a P4 2.4Ghz PC with WinXp. Make sure you follow the WinXP tweaking guidelines in the PDF on the CD.
Sound
I was a little disappointed in how harsh the sound was when recording direct, in particular vocals and acoustic guitar. You'll need some sort of pre- to warm it up. I'm using a 10 year old Digitech RP1 effects pedal, even on vocals, which makes a big difference.
Quality
Made mostly of plastic so I'm really careful unplugging/plugging cables so as not to crack anything.
Manufacturer Support
Never had to deal with support.

TASCAM US-224 USB Audio Customer Review

Very functional, stable, and best of all no dropouts. I do recommend experimenting with the available drivers a little. Different revs work better/worse with different software.
