The sound is as good as you will find, I sold one on ebay and bought a compact flash card recorder of professional standard, but I have returned to the Tascam Dat recorder

Very good once you have got used to it, like all modern equipment, there is a learning curve, which is not so hard.

will never sell it as long as I can have it serviced when required

"Exactly what I desired."
Though portable, my recorder is mostly (while recording)run on mains, so the battery lifetime is no problem for me.
I use it together with Hebden mics(UK)and Syntrillium CEP editing S/W, and most of my CD:s are very well received among music pros.

"A pro DAT portable for field use"
Light weight and has all the features I need, with the only problem of the short battery life - about 1 and a half hours using phantom mic power. I solved that problem using an SLA 12AH 6 volt battery.
