Silvertone Classic 1478 Electric Guitar

That guitar -- is it vintage? No, its Silvertone's revival of a 1963 classic. Single-coils and a Bigsby tremolo take the 1478 guitar into the 21st century.

Had to reverse 3 Bridge Saddles, Adjust Pole Pieces on Bridge Pickup, and do a basic setup - VIOLA - what a tone machine... Jazz, Country, Blues and Rock - you'll find in it!!! I have used this on MANY Nashville and Memphis gigs... Can't believe the number of folks who run up to see if they are really seeing a Silvertone - AWESOME!!!

This guitar has completely replaced my Fender Jazzmaster as my main guitar. The bound neck with block inlays is stunning... The bigsby is smooth and subtle... The pickups are warm and inviting, always asking you to play more... This guitar is perfect for me. I play a lot of experimental stuff so this is great for noise and feedback, but it also does well with traditional styles such as blues or jazz. I can not put this thing down.

"One of the best guitars I have ever played"

I have a string of Fenders and Gibsons but this is always the first guitar I pick up-From the pickups, which have this incredible crackle to them when you push the volume, to the play-ability of the neck-this guitar has features that guitars three times the price don't have, uniquely styled and so much fun to play. Can't be happier to add it to my rig-I might even get a second one to do some customizing on!

"Good sound, but it refuses to stay in tune."

I really like the sound of this guitar, and it seems solidly built, but I couldn't get it to stay in tune at all with the Bigsby on it. I had to wrap the string ends around the roller bar(basically hardtailing the guitar) to get any kind of tuning stability. The tolerances on the tune-o-matic piece are really loose, too, which doesn't help with the tuning issues. If it stayed in tune, I'd probably be using it all the time, but as it is, it would never make it through a gig in tune.

Musical Background:

Playing guitar for 10 years, 5 of them with a gigging band

Musical Style:

hard rock, blues, some metal

"Silvertone 1478 re-issue review"

I'll start by saying that i was casually looking at guitars at a local store when i stopped and said, "what the heck is that!"... is it used/ vintage, wtf? No, re-issue, cool, what'd they upgrade? Let's play it. The one in the shop played great; it definitely went through the hands of the luthier there is my guess because intonation/ action/ playability/ short scale neck made it feel like a toy (i usually play an SG w/ 12 gauge in drop C). Plugging it in and messing with light gain settings for old-fashioned riffs instantly gave that Jack White "papery" quality of a "cheap" guitar, that still ROCKED! $500 though was steep price for something made in Indonesia with such cheap feeling pegs and though the bigsby trem and install alone would be worth about $300, i found a "blemished" on on ZZounds for $360. Quality parts from the wood, design, neck. slick fretboard and overall funky tone made it worth it for me. So, i ordered the blemished version and knew it had been returned because this one was definitely not SET up for playability. TRUSS ROD: seemingly straight out of the box, but terrible buzz on standard-ish action. Ultimately, looks like the NUT is too low from the factory (after adjusting each time i re-strung it, bridge/ saddles/ pickup polarity, NUT STILL NEEDS adjusting to make strings sit HIGHER). I've since done a few things to it and will be playing my 2nd show with it this week. - Truss rod adjustment: absolutely necessary, playing with slight relief and still have high action to avoid shifting dead spots. (5th string 10 fret/ 3rd string 12 fret). Tuning standard and drop D standard also changes how low i can bring the action dramatically. - Factory strings were 9 gauge, way too thin, I put 11s on it and it plays beautifully in drop D standard. Currently Heavy bottom 52, light top 10, probably too much "relief" by normal standards to off-set lower bridge-action, intonation Okay minus 1st position open chords (the dam nut)-- definitely experiment with your type of playing to get the right strings on it for you, this will affect tension and how low you can bring down the action. - PEGS: factory ones feel terribly cheap which does affect tone, everything effects tone! ordered and installed a pair of vintage strat style tuners, not noticeably different to the ears but my heart feels better about it. - PICKUPS: i adjusted only the bridge pickup high E string to a bit further from the string to make it overall a little darker/ not as bright. - The Balance on this guitar (using my ears only w/ various clean + gain settings) is pretty good, almost nicer balanced than a custom shop strat that i've always felt was too bright, but hey, different guitar. - this this has a great variety of tone w/ treble fully OFF in neck position or Treble on+OFF fully in bridge position, very versatile. - Short scale definitely let's it feel like a toy and the multiple contact points on the bridge from the bigsby make this thing feel like a HOT ROD guitar for sure. - also really nice that this guitar isn't too common IMO. - thin white levy's strap and this this is ready to rock!
