This one is a keeper. I don't give a rat's a** what it says on the headstock- a great p-bass at a great price!
Sound
The tone is solidly in the p-bass family. Not as "woody" as a vintage p, a bit more warm and a bit more wooly. Strung with flats, huge bottom end and warm motown tone in spades. I like it! High freq response with round-wounds and a pick are what you would expect. This instrument is *very* responsive to playing styles. Good, usable range from the tone pot. The pickups have strong output, good articulation and clarity- I've heard rumors they are sourced Toneriders. They sure look it.
Features
It's a p-bass. Not really a feature-rich design. Doesn't need to be, though.
Ease of Use
Out of the box the setup was usable- tweaked for personal preference the playability is fantastic.
Quality
The only real issue is a few sharp fret ends- not terrible, though. Otherwise fit and finish are excellent.
Value
Performance vs cost ratio is off the charts! Best purchase I have made in a very long time.
The Wow Factor
Well, I bought it- it's safe to assume I really wanted it.

First off, this bass is beautifully made. I thought it was made in Indonesia but it's 'crafted in China'...which kind of made me do a second take. Before purchasing this 'hidden treasure', I've read and watched every single review on the net ( I think??? ) and each said that this bass is ( how can I say it? ) AWESOME!!!. I was reluctant to order it from Zzounds.com because of the name on the headstock ( sorry Squier ) but it was the last Matt Freeman bass available and I just couldn't let it pass. So, two days later the bass was in my hands. First thing I noticed was how beautiful-and shiny it was! Picking it up, it really felt good and comfortable in my hands...not too heavy either. Still reluctant about the sound, I nervously plugged it into my Amp and...WOW!!! It was this bright, crystal clear, bottom tone! I messed with volume and tone for an hr and was just amazed at each setting. I own a American Standard PBass that cost 3 times more and after a week of going back and fourth between the Squier & the Fender...I have to say that the little brother that was 'crafted in China' beat the hell out of its older brother...best way I can sum it. Everything about this bass is awesome. From the construction to the high mass bridge and everything in between...it's as solid as any American made Fender. Oh, the pickups are really awesome too...very loud and responsive! Get this bass! You won't regret it...like me. Don't let the name and where it's made fool you. Never was a fan of Squier until I got this bass. It can hold its own against bigger names...no lie. The tone is awesome from highest to lowest. the action is the lowest I've ever played...really comfortable on the fingers. I hope this answers any question about the Squier Matt Freeman Bass.

I chose to purchase this bass as a back up for my other Precision. I must say it might become my main player. Great neck, great tone, great look. I would recommend this to anyone looking for that classic precision feel and tone.
